Bubsy hyperventilated inside the heavily armored bunker he locked himself within. Something was tearing its security systems apart, but they were moving so fast the security cameras couldn’t show him who or what the culprit was.
Three years ago, Mario was publicly executed. One year ago, Sonic the Hedgehog was murdered. The pattern was as obvious as it was worrying.
“I won’t be the next to die, I won’t be the next to die, I won’t be the next to die, I won’t be the next to die, I won’t be the next to die”, he chanted, trying to convince himself of it. This already impossible task became even tougher every time a camera went dead while failing to show any more of what destroyed it than an indistinct blue blur.
The last few cameras broke distressingly quickly, leaving him unable to see outside the bunker. All there was to do was wait and fear.
Thirty seconds later, Bubsy tore out his whiskers. Something slamming into the final door protecting him from death so hard it dented drove him to tear out enough of his hair to leave an empty patch of skin. A while that might’ve been short or long later, another impact turned the dent into a hole.
What Bubsy saw next was a sight he could not believe.
“I didn’t expect to find you in here”, said Sonic the Hedgehog.
“You’re not real!”, Bubsy yelled, “You’re just a fear-induced hallucination! My eyes are failing me, telling me that the dead live! MY DEATH APPROACHES ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF YOURS! EVERYTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG!!!!!”
Sonic watched Bubsy tear the rest of his fur out while trying to remember what today was an anniversary of. Once he remembered, he sighed and said, “All of this over a murder mystery party.”
