Summary:

"Happy Birthday Kim Mingyu!"

Mingyu stared at his coworkers in shock. They stared back at him equally shocked.

"Mr. Jeon?" Dokyeom yelled.

Mingyu had forgotten Wonwoo was hanging off on him, sucking a mark on the side of his neck.

Work Text:

Mingyu looked around his empty office with all the unoccupied cubicles. He couldn't believe his fate, he had been saddled with work with five minutes to go on the clock, on today of all days. Jeonghan had said it was an emergency and he needed it tomorrow. Dokyeom had a family emergency and couldn't work overtime. Jun had given the same excuse. When Mingyu had asked for help, Minghao had only shook his head before leaving. Soonyoung had pretended to be on call and left before Mingyu could even open his mouth.

Mingyu looked at the big clock, it was five thirty now. They got off at five. He sighed before cracking his knuckles.

"That's a bad habit," A voice said, even though it was said quietly it carried in the empty room.

"Who do you think I picked it up from?" Mingyu asked.

"I guess I am to blame for that," Wonwoo said, walking to him. Mingyu noticed the briefcase in Wonwoo's hand.

"Are you going home?" Mingyu asked.

"I was going to. But then I saw your car was still here," Wonwoo said.

"You don't have to wait for me. You can go home. I'll—"

"Mingyu," Wonwoo said, his tone chiding.

"Right. Just go sit anywhere you want," Mingyu mumbled.

"How long will this take?" Wonwoo asked.

"An hour or two."

"Can't you do it tomorrow?" Wonwoo asked.

"I can't. Jeonghan said he needed it in his office at nine tomorrow."

"I'll have a word with him," Wonwoo said. Mingyu giggled.

"Yeah? What are you gonna say?"

"The next time you make my boyfriend work overtime again, I'll make a report to the HR," Wonwoo said, voice suddenly deep and serious. Mingyu looked around cautiously.

"Stop it. No one's here," Wonwoo said.

"That's what you said when we were at the staircase but we got caught."

"By the janitor." Wonwoo pointed out.

"But what if?"

"Alright, I'll be careful, Mr. Kim," Wonwoo said with an understanding nod.

"Glad you could see my point, Mr. Jeon."

Fifteen minutes later, Mingyu's phone rang. It was Jeonghan.

"Where are you?" Jeonghan asked. It was a bit noisy in the back.

"Huh? At work. Where else would I be?"

"Why are you still there, Mingyu?"

"Are you trying to piss me off or did you forget that you assigned me this work before you left?" Mingyu asked.

"Oh my God!"

"What?"

"It's late Mingyu. You should come home. Go home. I mean, go home," Jeonghan said,

"Are you drunk?"

"Just go home."

"But what about—"

"Pack up. Leave the office. Now."

Mingyu stared at his phone with a frown.

"What's wrong?" Wonwoo asked.

"Jeonghan wants me to go home," Mingyu mumbled. Wonwoo laughed.

"I swear to god there's something wrong with him."

"Can we go now?" Wonwoo asked.

"But I don't wanna work on this in the morning!" Mingyu whined.

"But it's your birthday today. Let's go home."

"So we can see what surprise you planned for me?" Mingyu asked, wiggling his eyebrows.

"For the last time, there is no surprise."

"Oh come on. I know you bought me a gift."

"Don't get your hopes too high."

"Never did," Mingyu said and earned a glare from Wonwoo. Mingyu loved his boyfriend but Wonwoo sucked at giving gifts. He didn't mind it though.

"You know it would have been easier if you told me what you wanted," Wonwoo mumbled.

"I honestly couldn't think of anything. I have everything I want right here," Mingyu said, tapping his finger on the tip of Wonwoo's nose. Wonwoo's cheeks turned a pretty shade of pink and he smiled.

By five fifty, Mingyu had Wonwoo pressed against the wall of the elevator, a hand wrapped around his waist, kissing him passionately.

"You do know the elevators have cameras right?" Wonwoo asked when Mingyu pulled back to catch a breath. It took two seconds longer for it to make sense.

"I did not know that! What? Why didn't you tell me?" Mingyu jumped back, looking around.

"You didn't give me a chance to. You started attacking me as soon as the doors closed." Wonwoo chuckled, walking out as the elevator doors opened.

"What if somebody saw?" Mingyu asked, following after him.

"Wanna go home together?" Wonwoo asked.

"You're gonna leave your car here?" Mingyu asked, as they walked to the parking lot.

"Yeah, I don't think I would be in any state to drive to work in the morning," Wonwoo said.

"Good to know we're thinking the same thing." Mingyu giggled.

"Is it a book? I mean, no problem if it was. I would be a teeny tiny bit disappointed but I'll let you make it up to me." Mingyu asked when they were stuck in traffic.

"It's not a book."

"Okay. What is it made of? Plastic? Or… glass? Ceramic?" Mingyu guessed, trying to see Wonwoo's reaction. But Wonwoo merely rolled his eyes.

"Is it a reservation? Or a ticket?" Mingyu asked.

"It's not. You'll see it when we get home."

"Is it a mug? Please don't tell me it's a mug. I love you but—"

"It's not."

"Thank you very much," Mingyu said.

"Is it—"

"I'm not telling you."

"A maid outfit?" Mingyu finished.

"For you?" Wonwoo asked.

"No, You. I think I wouldn't mind that," Mingyu said and watched as Wonwoo's eyes widened.

"I'm joking," Mingyu said before quietly mumbling,"I'm not."

"For our anniversary then," Wonwoo said.

"That's like seven months away. Your birthday comes before that, I'll buy it," Mingyu said.

"That's a gift for you. Not for me," Wonwoo said, though he didn't sound offended.

"I think we'll both enjoy it," Mingyu said as he parked the car.

"Yeah but it's not a gift for me, is it? It's like you're giving yourself a gift on my birthday. Like giving a mother a vacuum cleaner as a gift. It's tacky."

"My mother would love to get a vacuum cleaner as a gift. In fact, I would love to—"

"Alright. Alright. Let's go," Wonwoo said, dragging him into the elevator. Mingyu watched as Wonwoo turned to him as soon as the elevator doors closed.

"For the record, this elevator doesn't have a camera," Wonwoo said, wrapping his hand around Mingyu's tie. Mingyu smiled when Wonwoo's lips met his in a hot and needy kiss. Mingyu's left hand snaked around his lover's hips before moving down to cup his ass. Even the elevator opening couldn't separate them. Mingyu clung to Wonwoo as he guided them out of the elevator.

"Hurry up!" Wonwoo whispered impatiently as Mingyu punched in the code. Wonwoo kissed his neck, hands wrapping around his middle.

Wonwoo jerked away.

Someone started singing happy birthday and a second later, Minghao came into view carrying the cake. Minghao's singing gradually came to a stop when no one joined in.

Mingyu turned to Wonwoo who now had his back pasted to the door. He looked like he was having an allergic reaction. Mingyu turned back to face his coworkers. He was fucked.

"Oh my God! What a surprise!" Mingyu yelled, loudly clapping. He could hear Wonwoo sigh behind him.

"Thank you so much guys. I wasn't expecting it at all," Mingyu said before blowing at the half melted candle.

"We weren't expecting that either," Jeonghan said.

"Isn't this Mingyu's friend from the research department ?" Minghao asked, looking at Wonwoo.

"I wouldn't call that being friends,” Dokyeom said.

"Oh." Minghao mumbled before turning to Mingyu.

"Did you two fight?" Minghao whispered.

"Minghao darling, bless your heart. We wanted to throw a surprise party, so surprise! Here's your party, Mingyu. There we go. We should all go now," Jeonghan said, moving past Mingyu in a hurry. But that only put him face to face with Wonwoo.

"Guys, you're not gonna believe what I found in Mingyu's bedroom." Soonyoung's voice rang out loudly. Soonyoung held out a framed picture that Mingyu kept on the table next to their bed.

"Oh fuck me!"

"Wonwoo, what are you doing here?" Soonyoung asked. He then pointed to the framed picture of Mingyu kissing him on the cheek, and asked, "What are you doing here?"

Mingyu heard the room collectively gasp. Dokyeom dramatically closed a hand over his mouth.

"You saw us kissing! Why are you acting shocked?" Mingyu asked.

"Well it's still shocking!" Dokyeom yelled.

"At least he's not bitchless," Minghao said, handing the cake to him. Wonwoo made a noise. Mingyu took a quick glance.

"Oh my God, Minghao. Don't call Mingyu's boyfriend a bitch." Soonyoung said.

"Shit. I'm not calling you a bitch. That's just something people say. Sorry." Minghao said sheepishly.

"How did you guys even get inside?" Mingyu asked, he took the cake from Minghao's hands and walked to the kitchen. Five pairs of eyes followed him as took the knife and cut the cake.

"Wonwoo, don't just stand there. Come take the plates," Mingyu said. Wonwoo sprang into action, clearing the distance between the foyer and the kitchen in record time.

"So, how did you guys get in? Did you break in?" Mingyu asked.

"You told me your passcode," Dokyeom said. Wonwoo turned to glare at him, placing their plates in front of him.

"Spoons?" Mingyu asked and Wonwoo was back to looking through their cabinets.

Mingyu sliced the cake and placed them on the plates. He handed it to his coworkers while Wonwoo handed them the spoon. It was quiet but no one had asked any questions. Well, Soonyoung had tried to and Jeonghan had shut him down. They left after finishing their cake, not wanting a second slice and Mingyu didn't insist on it either.

"That was unexpected," Mingyu mumbled, falling into the couch. He glanced at Wonwoo who had been quiet till now.

"I'll tell them to keep this a secret," Mingyu said.

"It's fine. It was bound to happen," Wonwoo said, walking into the bedroom. Mingyu frowned, staring at the bedroom door. He wondered if Wonwoo was upset. He was about to get off the couch to check on Wonwoo when the bedroom door opened again.

"Here's your present." Wonwoo said, walking over to him with a gift bag in hand.

"Want me to open it now?" Mingyu asked. Wonwoo shrugged.

Mingyu looked into the gift bag and smiled when he saw everything inside was wrapped in brown.

"No gift wrap?" Mingyu asked, pulling out one of the gifts inside.

"Please don't let this be what I think it is," Mingyu said, unwrapping the brown paper.

"Don't be ungrateful."

"Asshole." Mingyu said. It was a coffee mug and when Mingyu pulled it out of the box it had come in, he saw it had a picture of Wonwoo printed on the side.

"Saved because I'm very much in love with your face," Mingyu said.

Wonwoo laughed before saying, "Your face is on the other side."

Mingyu turned the mug around and laughed. Mingyu placed the mug and pulled out another wrapped gift.

"Okay. What's this?" Mingyu asked, unwrapping it.

"Socks? Not bad," Mingyu hummed, placing the pack of white socks down.

"A dog?" Mingyu asked, eyeing the figurine.

"I couldn't figure out how to wrap it." Wonwoo said sheepishly.

"Don't worry. I like it." Mingyu said, turning the dog figurine in his hand. There were three more figurines. Mingyu smiled when he pulled out a notebook.

"What's this?" Mingyu asked, as he started flipping the pages of the scrapbook. It contained photos of him that he didn't even know Wonwoo had taken. Wonwoo had doodled on a few pages, even writing a few short poems here and there. Mingyu smiled as he read them.

"Thank you," Mingyu said simply, unable to put his feelings into words. Wonwoo smiled like he understood even without Mingyu having to tell him.

"Like it?" Wonwoo asked. Mingyu held his arms out for Wonwoo. Wonwoo climbed into his lap, snaking his arms around Mingyu.

"Happy birthday, Mingyu," Wonwoo whispered, placing a soft kiss on Mingyu's cheek.
