Chapter Text
The things she did for her cousin. There was nothing like familiar guilt. Arriving too late to raise your baby cousin, after your home planet exploded can make you feel the need to make it up to them in other ways.
Like going to their interview with the youngest female CEO of a fortune 500 company because he blew out his powers that morning and can’t make it to the city in time when it’s your one day off and your lovely but religiously homophobic mother is coming to town. So much for a quiet morning before judgement and friendly drama.
He had given her five minutes in total for warning, and it was superspeed alone that had meant she was not tardier than her outfit. Fucking Kal. It was her day off; she was in sweatpants and a tank top she had stolen from Alex. Same with the leather jacket she was sporting. Sisters united against mother!
Nothing though, says professional replacement reporter like a giant blond woman in her day off loungewear. She briefly thought about doing up the laces of her combat boots but by the look of the receptionist’s confusion, it was probably better she explain why she was there.
Fucking Kal.
Her phone made the sound of a bottle cap hitting the bar table, letting her know he had finally sent his questions. Men. He hadn’t exactly asked either, more like told her because, ‘She is a Luthor Kara, we must know her intentions in your city. It is suspicious.’
She herself hoped the woman just wanted the sunny weather and Californian beaches.
“I am here for Miss Luthor in Mr Kent’s place. He got food poisoning rather unfortunately and I am all they had available close by. Sorry.”
The receptionist with the name tag, ‘Jess,’ gave her sceptical once over but stood to usher her in.
“Right this way. Miss Danvers, I presume. He called.” Came her reply.
“That’s me.” Kara replied taking a deep breath and entering behind the woman as the doors opened.
Holy shit!
The room was naturally lit by the sun coming in from the floor to ceiling windows wrapping around the room. It was minimalistic in décor, charcoal tiles, and dark furnishings, offset by the snow white couch to the left and clear glass side table and desk. It was commanding. The window, directly behind the woman she was here to interrogate on Clark’s behalf, led directly out onto a balcony, she noted for later. And what a woman.
She sat haloed by the sun as she looked over a document, glancing up as Jess cleared her throat, to reveal the most hypnotic set of Kryptonite green eyes, Kara had ever seen. Holy Shit!
“Miss Danvers here in Mr Kent’s stead, Miss Luthor.”
Miss Luthor put down her pen, her brows rising as she gave the woman before her a once over. Kara stood, mouth agape as Katy Perry’s E.T. exploded in her head.
Miss Luthor was Ethereal and Clark could suck it with his judgemental spite.
“Interesting.” Miss Luthor replied, rising and Kara realised she’d said some of that out loud.
Shit!
Lena looked to her assistant. “Thank you, Jess, that will be all.”
The woman nodded before leaving with a slight shake of her head as she passed the uncomfortable blonde giant.
“I didn’t realise the Daily Planet had such a lax dress code Miss Danvers.”
“I’m not a reporter.” Kara replied recovering. “Clark’s my cousin and sent me a text message about ten minutes ago telling me I had to salvage his interview after coming down with food poisoning.”
Kara straightened into one of her more Supergirl poses and Miss Luthor seemed to follow the movement of her shoulders.
Something lit up in the Luthor’s eyes as she gestured to the chair in front of her desk, retaking her own seat.
“Well, then, shall we get to it then? I’m guessing he gave you a list of questions about my genocidal, anti-alien brother and my secret intentions for National City?” Miss Luthor asked.
“Something like that. He sent it through as I arrived but that sounds like the wording he used when he told me why I had to interview you. Do you mind if I record this?”
“By all means.” Miss Luthor responded.
Kara pulled out her L-Corp phone and set it up in between them. Miss Luthor raised a brow and Kara’s heart stuttered a little.
“That’s from my new line.” Lena gestured to the device.
“Clark swears by Apple but when I saw this one, I had to ditch Samsung which somehow pissed him off more. My sister Alex, switched to one as well in solidarity. They’re great phones.” Kara grinned, about to hit record when she realised she couldn’t leave her phone on the desk if she wanted to be able to read out his questions and pulled it back.
“Problem?” Miss Luthor asked.
“It has the questions.” Kara sighed out and Miss Luthor hummed in acknowledgement, watching curiously as Kara scoffed upon reading what she had to ask.
“Idiot!” Kara grumbled pinching her brow. “Clark, your questions suck. You have Lena Luthor giving you an exclusive interview and you’re first five questions are about her moron brother. Fuck, that!”
She hit record.
He was so dumb sometimes for a feminist.
“Off script. I like it.” Lena replied curious and warming towards the strange woman in her office.
“Okay, you are known for your scientific prowess and ingenuity in the academic communities. Having so many degrees under your belt, what is your advice to the up-and-coming young women looking to enter your fields of expertise?”
Lena straightened with a grin and gave Kara an approving nod.
“What a refreshing question Miss Danvers.” Making the woman beam.
The interview followed along the same kind of lines. Kara asking Lena questions, she herself, as a female scientist, had for the Luthor genius as well as questions people of their generation might have. The Luthor happily answering them all until Jess informed her that her next appointment was in ten minutes.
“Thank you for your time, Miss Luthor. I hope you have a great rest of your day.” Kara offered as she stopped the recording.
“Not at all.” And please, call me Lena. I must say, if all interviews were like yours, I might think about doing more. Are you sure you aren’t a reporter?”
Kara chuckled. “Definitely not.”
“Could have fooled me.” Lena replied.
“What can I say,” Kara flirted. “I’m a woman of many talents.”
“I don’t doubt it, Miss Danvers.” The Luthor replied a little huskier than before.
“Please, if I’m to call you Lena, then you should call me Kara.”
“And what is it that Kara Danvers really does when she isn’t saving her baby cousin on her day off in her loungewear?”
“I’m a woman of Science and Engineering, working on contracts as requested alongside my sister and adoptive mother.”
“Well, I sincerely hope this isn’t the last time we meet then.” Lena replied her curiosity heightened.
“I hope not either, Miss Luthor.”
“Lena.” The Luthor corrected.
“Lena.” Kara amended as her phone rang out with James Olsen’s ringtone.
‘Women don’t owe you sh*t,’ by Aston.
Lena raised a brow.
“James Olson. Asshole who can’t take no for an answer. Not important.” Kara replied silencing her phone.
“Are you in the habit of personalising all your ringtones?” The Luthor asked.
“How else am I to know if I want to answer?” Kara grinned.
“Touché,” came the Luthor’s reply.
Kara turned to leave as Jess opened the door.
“Do you have a card for your place of work. In case I wish for a consult?” Lena asked.
“No, but I do have this.” Kara offered her phone and the Luthor raised her brow but accepted.
“Very well.”
She entered her number handing it back. Kara typed something out and Lena heard her phone buzz back on her desk.
“If you need any of the Danvers Women, you can reach us, through me, on that number.” Kara replied as she left.
Jess looked at her curiously as she passed.
“Tokyo on line three in five minutes Miss Luthor.”
“Thank you, Jess.”
Kara’s phone vibrated in her hand with a call from Alex and she answered as she paused to wait for the elevator.
“The better Dr Danvers.”
‘Oh, fuck off you lab mutant.’ Came Alex’s reply and Kara laughed.
“What do you need Alex. If it’s to pick mum up the answer is absolutely not. I did it last time and she said I drive too fast and then tried to convince me to date her new male lab tech. It is your turn to put up with her anti-gay meddling and I’ve already helped Clark today.”
‘Ugh! No fair! I’m your sister. You should always pick me for annoying favour privileges.’
“I’m adopted. You said it yourself when I asked you to save me from that blind date last week. Clark is actually my blood.”
‘You suck!’ Alex complained.
“Love you, bye!” Kara replied stepping into the elevator as she ended the call, switching it off silent.
The familiar sounds of Women don’t owe you shit, filled the box as the doors closed and Kara switched it back onto silent unaware of her audience as both Jess and Miss Luthor watched the most bizarrely interesting woman to waltz through the new halls of L -Corp.
“Make a note downstairs Jess that if Miss Danvers drops by, to send her right up.” Lena instructed before heading back into her office for Tokyo and Danvers Research.
