Work Header

You said, "Baby, no attachment"

Summary:

The debrief room isn't exactly the best place to let your heart out, especially after a race. But heartbreak clouded Max's sense of judgment and it's not like Lando can banned other drivers into the room.

Or, that time Max sang his heart out and people listened.

Notes:

This idea has been living rent free in my head ever since I heard this song. Believe it or not, I haven't listened to any of Chappell Roan song until like a few days ago. A heinous crime, I know.

Anyway, songfic is hard to write lmao.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

My friends call me a loser
'Cause I'm still hanging around

A singing voice in the debrief room. That's… unusual, weird even. The voice was soft, almost breathless, Oscar wouldn't be able to hear it from outside if it wasn't for the ajar door, a low music accompanying the singing.

The young Aussie quietly slipped into the room, meeting Lando's eyes. His teammate was seated in front of Max… who was singing, facing him. The brit gestured for him to be quiet.

Oscar nodded, taking a seat in one of the chairs in the back.

I've heard so many rumors
That I'm just a guy that you bang on your couch

Oscar's eyes widened, his mouth gaped open. He heard of the rumors before, he knew who Max was singing about. The grid wasn't exactly the best place to keep a secret, nothing was ever a secret here.

“He said it was casual.” Oscar remembered that conversation, the grid hottest gossip always involved someone's love life. But everyone who looked could see the pure love in Max's eyes.

They thought the two of them had worked it out, apparently they didn't.

I thought you thought of me better
Someone you couldn't lose
You said, "We're not together"
So now when we kiss, I have anger issues

Fernando winced as he sat next to the rookie, eyes never leaving the singing Max. Lando had raised his eyebrows at him when he entered the room, as if warning him to not blabber about this to the guy in question.

He sighed, that stupid boy.

“We're not together.” But the hand-holding and stolen glances said otherwise. Fernando noticed the hurt in Max's eyes. He had pulled the other away from the dutch.

“Talk it out with him,” Fernando had advised him.

“What do you mean?” the guy had sounded genuinely confused at that time, it frustrated him.

Max had driven recklessly that day.

Foolish boy.

You said, "Baby, no attachment"
But we're
Knee deep in the passenger seat, and you're eating me out
Is it casual now?

Lewis had followed Fernando after the race inside the briefing room, not noticing the singing Max. He threw Lando an apologetic look when he did, understanding the intimate situation they had intruded. The younger's expression became exasperated.

Max's voice cracked, as if he was choking back tears, and Lewis listened.

Two weeks, and your mom invites me to her house on Long Beach
Is it casual now?

Lewis’ eyes widened, didn't they say the relationship was mutually casual? But he had invited Max to meet his parents?

Lewis couldn't understand them at all.

I know what you tell your friends
It's casual, if it's casual now
Then, baby, get me off again
If it's casual, it's casual now

Did he think it was casual because they never put a label on it?

“We're not together.” Max had choked back his tears back then.

“It's only casual, right Max?” he had easily told his friends back home, smiling wide with his stupidly handsome face back at Max.

“Yeah,” Max had managed to croak, faking a grin when that sweet chocolate looked at him with a soft gaze.

Dumb love, I love being stupid
Dream of us in a year
Maybe we'd have an apartment
And you'd show me off to your friends at the pier

Daniel stood in front of the door, lost in thought. He remembered that day Max called him, crying.

“I thought we have something, Dan,” his friend managed to say between sobs. “But he didn't even hesitate to deny!”

“Why did he even invite me here?” and Daniel didn't have anything to answer that question. Max wasn't the only one thinking the two were finally progressing, moving to the next stage.

I know, "Baby, no attachment"

“Baby, no attachment,” the deep brown reflects the sun, warm mahogany turned into honey, looking up at him from where he laid on Max's lap, kissing his stomach.

Max should have stopped then, cutting this ambiguous relationship that has only broken him bit by bit.

Instead he smiled, embracing that sweet nectar trapping him deeper, “Yeah, no attachment.”

He's so stupid.

But we're
Knee deep in the passenger seat, and you're eating me out
Is it casual now?
Two weeks, and your mom invites me to her house on Long Beach
Is it casual now?
I know what you tell your friends
It's casual, if it's casual now

If it's casual

He spotted Daniel by the door, confused by the frozen man. He approached the man closer, planning to snap the man out of the trance when he heard it.

Soft, alluring voice he couldn't get out of his head, driving him crazy in their times of intimacy. Messy tousled hair and burning scratch mark but he could never find himself stopping once they started.

It's hard being casual
When my favorite shirt lives in your dresser

“Is that my shirt?” Max had looked up at him with his bright blue eyes, beaming. The dutch looked down, ears turning red as he realized what he's wearing.

“I- it's- Ijustgrabbedwhatever,” Max had stammered. He had left his apartment earlier that morning, the dutch still sleeping on his bed, tired from last night.

He had laughed at the embarassed answer. He didn't mind the other wearing his shirt. Max had looked absolutely adorable. The dutch may be taller but he was bigger, the shirt had hung loosely on Max's shoulder, making him appear smaller.

“Good thing you didn't grab my team shirt,” he had teased the other. Max made it a habit to steal his shirt since then.

And it's hard being casual
When I'm on the phone talking down your sister

“Where's Max?” his sister had asked.

“Why are you looking for him?”

“I prefer to talk to my brother in law.”

His heart started to beat louder, “He's not-” the door to his room opened. Max peeked his head into the room.

“Food's here- oh, you're still busy?”

He shook his head, “My sister, she wants to talk to you.”

“Me?” the other had sounded surprised.

He chuckled as he jokingly said, “She like her brother in law better than her own brother. I'll leave you to it.”

He had watched in amusement as Max entertained his sister, finding the situation funny and endearing at the same time.

And I try to be the chill guy
That holds his tongue and gives you space
I try to be the chill guy
But honestly, I'm not

“Are you okay?” Max had come to him when his race didn't go well.

“What do you think?!” he had chased the other out when he's just trying to help. His pride had stopped him from apologising.

“Alright, I'll give you space.”

He's such an asshole.

Knee deep in the passenger seat, and you're eating me out
Two weeks, and your mom invites me to her Long Beach house
I know what you tell your friends
Baby, get me off again

He pulled Max to the backseat, the dutch clumsily stumbled into his lap. They snickered, looking at each other.

He slipped a hands under Max’s shirt, rubbing a circle on the lithe hips. A soft hums, a habit Max developed when he’s content. He smiled as he breath in the sweet smell of wildflowers and rain.

He tugged on Max's shirt, pulling it up as he pushed the dutch down onto the soft padding. Max giggled as he plant butterflies kisses all over his chest. The amused laughed slowly turned into a series of moans as he sucked into the other's skin harder, fully intending to leave his mark.

He reached down, Max's thigh's on his shoulder as he stared at the gaping hole with hunger. He rubbed a thumb over it and Max whined.

“Plaag mij niet-!”

He licked his lips, he had heard the phrase so many times he knew it by heart, “I'm not, darling.”

I fucked you in the bathroom when we went to dinner
Your parents at the table, you wonder why I'm bitter

“Your dad's gonna arrive in 10,” Max informed him. He nodded, continuing fixing his tie.

Max closed the bathroom door before he jumped up the counter, cornflower blue staring at the way his hands move.

He glanced at the dutch, taking in the grown out sandy blond that soften Max’ features, his eyelashes are short, flutters down prettily as he lowered his gaze. His pink lips pursed, another endearing habit the dutch has.

His hands caught up in a twist. “Fuck this tie!" he threw his hands up, frustrated.

“Want some help?”

He stepped closer to the dutch, tilting his head a little as the other worked his magic. Max pat his chest gently when he finished, straightened up his wrinkled collar and suit.

"There you go," the dutch looked at his handiwork proudly.

The two of them looked at each other, the corner of Max' mouth turned upward. He can't help but pulled the dutch into a kiss. The other man let out a small strangled sound before snaking his arms to curl around the nape of his neck, pulling at his hair, deepening their kiss.

Max taste just like the Gazpacho his mother cooked at lunch.

The dutch pulled away, grasping for breath, “Your mom's waiting for us-!”

“Let her wait,” he captured Max's lips again.

Bragging to your friends, I get off when you hit it
I hate to tell the truth, but I'm sorry, dude, you didn't
I hate that I let this drag on so long, now I hate myself
Hate that I let this drag on so long, you can go to hell

Lando sighed as Max finished voicing his heart out, the younger man offered him his handkerchief as his tears kept falling. “Oh, Max…”

“Don't pity me.”

“I won't.”

Silence engulfed them, the debrief room only filled with gasping of breath and hiccups. No one dared to say a word.

Lando suddenly stood up, his wild eyes hardened. The younger man stepped closer, hands on Max's shoulder as if shielding him from whoever approaching.

“Lando?” Max called him, confused, still hadn't noticed. But Lando understood, his friend's senses always went dull for a short while when he cried his heart out as he’s not used to the act. Though it did trigger Lando's protective streak on him.

“Lando, please,” Max's eyes widened as he heard the all too familiar voice. His breath hitched when someone stopped in front of him. Lando's grip on his shoulder tightened.

Max slowly looked up. His breath hitched.

The man he just sang his heart out was now in front of him. Deep brown staring into his sky blue, eyebrows drawn together as it droops.

“Max,” he called, voice ever so soft, the way they always did when he called him. His warm wide hands caressed his red cheeks, wiping off traces of tears, Max gasped.

Carlos leaned down, pulling them closer, before pressing their lips together.

Notes:

I was planning to add smut on Carlos' POV but I just found out my weakness-. The amount of fic I pulled up for reference just for that two part is unbelievable.

Also, did you guys notice I never mentioned Carlos name until that last paragraph?
