Chapter Text

Sophia Diaz was worried for different reasons and for different people.

When her brother Eddie called her the first time back at the beginning of the summer, she was defenitely surprised to find out that her nephew, Christopher, was going to stay with their parents for an undefined time period.

There wasn't much she managed to say to him as soon as he explained what had happened with Kim and Marisol.
"He just needs space, you know that, he's going to come back because he loves you and you're an amazing dad,-"
"Certainly don't feel an amazing dad right now, or amazing at all."
After a sigh she kept talking "-but you have to get your shit together...start by apologising again to both Christopher and Marisol and by never ever seeing Kim again." this time her voice admitted no indulgence.
"And for God's sake, talk to your therapist! This is way more than just cheating on your nun-girlfriend!"
"Apologising to Christopher is the only thing i'm going to do for the rest of my life if that's what it'll take to fix this mess. About Marisol, she hasn't answered any of my calls."
"I bet she didn't. Listen Eddie, i'm not going to lie to you and say that things will just go back as they were in no time, or that they will at all, but you've never been good to yourself and now is the time to start or else your life will only get worse."
"I know...i know. Buck has been telling me the same since Chris left hours ago. I've already set up an appointment with Frank."
"Good. I will tell you how things are at home when i go there on my summer break. College is not that cool when you have to study multiple text books in Texas heat."
"Yeah, i can imagine. Thanks Soph."
"You're my family." was all she said

About an hour later Adriana facetimed her after Eddie updated her too about Chris.

Helena and Ramon weren't happy when two years ago they found out that their youngest child was going to leave El Paso just like their oldest did, but they were less unhappy when they understood that she was staying in Texas and not moving to LA, besides, Sophia had been genuinely excited at the idea of studying Medicine at Austin College, so she didn't really care what her parents thought about her life decisions. Even if she had had some doubts.
How Adriana managed to live a ten minutes drive from them was something Sophia couldn't really grasp, their condescension never ceasing even when her sister married, had two children and started a career in public administration, an ideal life for their parents, who still managed to find something to complain about their most beloved child.

Tho, enjoying the college experience didn't mean that it wasn't stressing her, actually Sophia started desiring the day her summer break would begin, even if that meant having to stay at her parents house.
"It's not like you're agonna be stuck with them, Soph, even Chris has started to do everything to escape their overbearing care, he's here most of the time playing with Diego and Genna, you two can hang out and come to eat at our house, you know that." her sister texted her when they talked about their summer plans.
It had been three weeks since Christopher went to El Paso, and while she was sad for Eddie, she had also been looking forward to spend more time with her nephew, who she hadn't seen since before Covid hit the world and who she had never really got to know.

She was 7 when she heard her freshly eighteen years old brother fight with their parents when he found out his girlfriend was pregnant. She was 8 when her sixteen years old sister rushed her, their mother and Shannon to the hospital the day Christopher was born. She was 12 when Eddie and her nephew moved to LA and she was about to turn 13 when she last met her brother and Chris at Shannon's funeral. Now she was 21 and whatever bond she had had with Eddie's son had faded into time and distance.

Notes:

English is not my first language nor i know the Spanish spoken in Mexico (or Spanish at all) and I'd really like to fairly represent the Diaz family Mexican heritage without falling into stereotypes, so if you have any correction or/and suggestion write it in the comments pls.
