She kicked some dirt into the water and watched the ripples spread across the surface. Pansy could feel tears burning at the edge of her eyes, she clenched her teeth. Still her reflection stood there smiling at her.
Happy, she was happy. The girl on the surface of the water.
It was stupid, she thought. It was a stupid thing to be upset over. Of course he’d never want to be with her, she could’ve seen that from a mile away. Prissy petty Pansy. All looks and no brain. A drop fell on the water. She blinked rapidly and leaned back. Another tear streamed down her cheek, she felt it.
Still her reflection stood there smiling at her.
Pansy took a step back and then another. And then a few more when it remained standing at the edge of the water. Rapidly she backed away, drying her tears, looking around but not finding anyone.
With a smile on her face she walked hurriedly away from the lake.
