Chapter 1: A late night ponder

Chapter Text

It was weird, how you were raised before compared to now. If you told yourself a year ago that you would be taken from your parents and placed into the custody of some of the highest members of that alien clown cult, you would have laughed. You honestly still might, but it’s been hard to do that lately.

You knew the Makaras pretty damn well, being a close friend of Gamzee’s before this all happened. You slept over their house quite often, everyone always welcoming you with open arms. You think they knew something was wrong with you then, after all, they had been the ones to contact the cops after getting the information out of you.

GHB says it's your eyes that gave it away for him. He said whenever you came over during the week your eyes made you seem perpetually tired, but when you stayed the night, or even just for an hour, you seemed to brighten up. This made sense to you, if you were looking from an outside perspective, you had nothing to worry about while here. Even when the time would get away from you and Gamzee during sleepovers, when you’d pull all-nighters with him, chatting about nonsense, you’d always feel more awake, more alive than you did at home.

You were currently curled up in GHB’s arms, in his bed, he didn’t want you out of his sights right now. The custody trial seemed to end as fast as it began, or maybe it was your heavy dissociation episode that you're still coming out of that made it seem short. Either way, GHB now has legal custody of you. It made you feel bad, the reason someone has had to be with you at all times during the past month.

You won’t deny it, the whole thing was your fault. Forgetting you actually had a support system of trolls who, really, really care about you. It got too much, and that itch under your skin came back. It was a simple solution to that problem, all it took was a plastic pencil sharpener and a screwdriver to get what you wanted, the cure for that feeling, that itch. A small blade and a scarred but clean forearm is all you needed to forget your problems. The sting of the fresh blade as it glided across your skin with ease, leaving behind a ruby red trail that burned.

That was bad, you knew it. So you did a reasonable thing for once, you asked for help. The memory, as fresh as it was, pained you to think on it, pained you to think of the fear, concern, and pain you caused.

The remembrance of you coming out of the bathroom, the small but sharp blade clutched in your hands. Your knuckles were turning white with how hard you were holding it. Walking to the main room of the house, the only one there was Marvus. There you stood, frozen, wondering if this was the right choice. Shaking that thought from your head you spoke before you could back out.

“I relapsed”

Then you assumed the news would cause a commotion, except it didn’t. Granted, Marvus was shocked and greatly concerned, but he wasn’t mad. He just asked to see it then helped you clean and bandage it properly.

He met with everyone in the house, who was old enough to know, individually. GHB comes first for obvious reasons. He didn’t seem too shocked about the news though, saying it was “all a part of the recovery process”. For a man who used to use the blood of his victims as paint for a clown church that tried to summon a demon back on alternia- he seemed pretty damn down to earth. That, or your perception of a normal person's thought process was just very skewed.

Regardless, as you said before, everyone in the house knew now. There was going to be very little time where you were alone now, and as much as you’ll miss it, it’ll probably be for the best in this situation.

You were staring at the wall, too wired to fall asleep right now. Though the big brute, who you could now call your father, was fast asleep behind you if his snores were anything to go by. You weren’t sure why exactly. It may just be your hyperactive mind at it again.

Just as you were about to spiral down another thought process the bedroom door creaked open, light breaking through in the darkness of the room before disappearing as the door closed once more. Although the footsteps you heard were more than enough to let you know you weren’t alone with GHB anymore, you knew who it was, the way their footprints sounded made you recall the strut Marvus seemed to always have.

Quickly shutting your eyes seemed to be the best choice of action as you felt the GHB stir from his sleep behind you. Calling out to the ringmaster looking clown mingling in the dark of the room.

“Marvus get the motherfuck out before you go startling the damn grub, just got the little motherfucker to bed an…” You could feel him turning his head behind you, looking at the alarm clock on his nightstand, “hour ago, you better not fuckin’ disturb them or so messiahs help me-” He whisper ranted, though he was met with a quiet chuckle.

“Theys ass never slept, dunno wat ur talkin’ ‘bout” You could just hear Marvus’ smirk from where you were. A hesitant quiet filled the air before you felt- and heard- the highblood sigh behind you.

“Really motherfucker? You’ve just been playin’ asleep this whole time?” The question was obviously directed at you, and you’d be damned if you were going to give yourself away like that, just because of some question.

“C’mon lil’ fucker, I know your awake” He mumbled again, still tired but nowhere near as sleepy as he sounded before. You could only sigh as you turned to face him, surprised to see Marvus was still here.

He was wearing just a plain undershirt and some fuzzy pj pants, unsurprisingly it had Faygo written on it, probably from some advertisement or sponsorship he had to do for them.

The grand highblood stared down at you, he was laying on his back now, his one arm still under your head but the other was now around Marvus who was curled into his side, they were both staring at you.

“Sorry?” You managed to mumble quietly, rubbing your eyes. Not getting a response, you closed your eyes and relaxed again, before you felt yourself being moved. When you opened your eyes again you were sandwiched between the two. You were surprised for a moment before you felt yourself relax, this was surprisingly very comfortable.

“There youz go bb, get comfy” Marvus spoke quietly, gently running his claws through your hair and scratching your scalp. You felt much safer between the two, not that you didn’t feel safe before, but this just felt more secure.

You felt GHB purr quietly as he wrapped his arms around your stomach, holding you how a small child would hold a teddy bear. Maybe this wouldn’t be a mistake after all. Maybe you’ve finally found your true family.
