November came by quickly, the cold following with. Everybody knows how easily the cold affects Lucy, especially Natsu. After all, he is Lucy’s personal heat source. More times than counted has Lucy unconsciously snuggled up to him during cold nights and Natsu never complains nor tells her about it.
It was the second week of November and Lucy had glued her head to her desk, groaning from the lack of ideas in her head. She was in desperate need of a change of scenery from being home for three days in a row trying to finish articles that Jason had asked her to do. She thought by editing articles from journalists she would earn some extra money.
Accepting his offer had its ups and downs. Yes, she got paid well, and adding her mission rewards got her rent paid in time but that also meant spending less time with her friends.
She sighed and climbed onto her bed pulling her curtains to the side to see the night sky. Just as she thought, it was clear.
Quickly she put on some warmer clothes and pulled on her thickest jacket. It was a long pink jacket with fur inside to ensure her warmth. Then she took an extra blanket from her closet and headed out.
The street lights were still on, some people were outside chatting, clearly with alcohol in their systems. She decided to take a right turn, not wanting to deal with any cat-callings tonight. Besides taking the long way had a prettier scenery.
Arriving at the hill she and Natsu had their picnics on, she laid down the blanket and sat down. For a while, she thought about her story but nothing came up. Instead, she gave up and laid down looking up to see the stars. She could name all the constellations in front of her thanks to stargazing every clear night with her mother back when she was younger.
“Found you.”
Startled, her reaction was to immediately punch the person that was breathing on her face. He stumbled back and let out a long painful groan.
“Oww Luce, what was that for?” Natsu pouted, rubbing his swollen cheek.
Lucy signed in annoyance. “How come I didn’t hear you walking up the hill?” She was sure she could hear the frozen glass blades being stomped on by Natsu, yet she didn’t. Quiet giggling could be heard from above.
He grinned pointing up. “Happy!”
“Right of course,”
“What’s that supposed to mean Lucyy!” Happy flew back down into her warm lap where she didn’t hesitate to pick him up and snuggle up to him. “Nothing.” By then Natsu had sat down beside her, watching the two of them laugh at Happy’s joke.
“We couldn’t find you in your natural habitat so we went to your favorite place in town!”
Happy exclaimed, still in Lucy's arms.
“My natural habitat?” She asked glancing over at Natsu.
“You’ve been locked in your apartment for days.” He explained, his tone was less energetic than a few moments ago. Lucy looked down in shame.
“Sorry. I just needed to get these done before it’s due.”
“Don’t be, I get it. We’ve been bored that’s all.” He grinned again, reassuring her that it was okay. He and Happy filled her In what she has missed the past few days. Nothing new, the regular brawls turned into something big that caused Erza to step in only for her to end up in the mess she tried to stop. Macao almost got locked up for hitting on several women while drunk one night. Lucy laughed, just normal Fairy Tail things.
While catching up, the two wizards heard soft snores coming from Happy. Natsu offered his scarf to wrap around him, setting him down between them. It was getting colder by the minute but being a fire wizard, Natsu had no problem with it. Lucy however was grateful for her thick fur jacket and layered clothing underneath, she also had no problem with it. Mostly because she was too busy staring up to even care about the cold wind that brushed by now and then.
Natsu stared. Despite it being dark, he imagined the stars lighting up her face, her beautiful face with a smile that matched no other, and her personality that glowed wherever she went. Following her like stars that would guide lost adventurers home.
“Did you see that!” Her sudden outburst snapped him out of his trance. She sat up with her hand grabbing his shoulder, shaking it uncontrollably.
“Yeah!” An obvious lie. “What is that again?” He said hoping she would repeat what she saw.
“Do you not know what a shooting star is?” She asked, raising an eyebrow suspiciously at him.
“Ohh! Like you?” He said. Her gaze shifted to an even more confused look.
“You were once a shooting star. When you got released from being a giant fish, and then I caught you from the sky. Remember?”
Referring to the key of the starry heavens fiasco, Natsu flashed a toothy grin after seeing he was right. “I mean, I guess you could interpret it like that.” Her cheeks were rosy. Either from blushing or from the cold, Natsu couldn’t tell.
He went back to looking at the stars. No, not Lucy, the real ones. For a while it was silent. The comfortable silence made Lucy think Natsu fell asleep from the lack of talking. When she looked he spoke.
“What’s that,” He said pointing up to the sky. Suddenly the colors of what seemed to be thin cirrostratus clouds shifted. It started as a light barely noticeable green into a strong line of green that moved gracefully across the night.
“They’re northern lights!” She gasped,
“I’ve never seen them so bright before..”
Lucy was mesmerized, never had she thought she would see the northern lights so clearly. Quickly she turned to Natsu.
“Have you never seen them?” She asked, Natsu shrugged.
“I think once when I was a kid. Erza had dragged me and Gray to see them but I was too tired to care. Slept through it despite Erza slapping me every now and then.” He chuckled at the memory, making Lucy laugh. Oh, how he loved her laugh. Every time she did it added years to his lifespan.
“Shh! If you listen you can hear their sound”
She placed a finger to his lips and listened. All he could think was her finger on his lips, almost forgetting to listen.
“Do you hear it?” For her, the sound was loud but so beautiful. Natsu did hear them but to him they were irritatingly loud and instead focused on Lucy’s heartbeat.
“Yeah, I hear it.”
She was so close, her finger still lingered on his lips. When she noticed Natsu's gaze she quickly pulled away her finger but Natsu grabbed her hand and pulled her into him. His other hand was placed on the side of her face where he leaned in to kiss her. Shocked at his sudden move, her brain took a few seconds to process before her hands gripped the back of his neck and into his hair.
He smiled once she returned the kiss. Taking it slow, knowing this was both their first kiss. Not including the Natsu and Happy incident.
Their kiss was broken by another shooting star. “Did you see that this time?” She smirked knowing he pretended to the first time. He reddened in embarrassment from getting caught. “I did actually,” he said.
“Did you make a wish?”
“My wish already came true.”
The look he gave her sent butterflies down her stomach. Suddenly a voice spoke from behind.
“I’m telling Gray.”
Happy, who woke up after being shoved by the two of them trying to listen to the sound of the northern light, moved behind them to continue sleeping but instead becoming a third wheel.
“Don’t you dare Happy.” Knowing they’ll never hear the end of it from Gray if Happy told him.
“How about Erza?” Before they protested he came up with someone even better.
“Oh wait! What about Mira!”
“NO!”
