Iida Tenya’s Instagram grid had once been a sanctuary of order and purpose: serene nature shots from his morning runs, highlights from hero agency social campaigns, and the occasional candid photo of his classmates during school events. Predictable, organized, and impeccably professional - just like him.
Recently, however, the tone had shifted.
It began innocuously enough with a carousel post titled "Ten Remedies for Insomnia". The slides offered detailed guides on mindfulness meditation, lavender oils, white noise, and even massage therapy. While oddly specific, it still fit his usual informative tone. Nobody thought much of it.
But then, the scenery posts started cropping up. Sweeping mountain views, vivid sunsets, tranquil nightscapes - each with a common thread. Someone else was always in the frame. A figure with untamed purple hair, broad shoulders wrapped in sweatshirts or casual button-downs, sometimes barely more than a hand reaching into the shot.
One particularly memorable post featured the summer festival fireworks. The subject, dressed in a blue yukata, cradled a massive cat plushie under one arm while holding a bubble tea cup in the other. His relaxed posture and the soft, dreamy glow of the fireworks overhead gave the photo a surreal, romantic quality. The caption?
@ingenium_tenya
“Beautiful.”
The comments were filled with praise for the composition and aesthetics, but a few stood out:
@alienqueen: are you talking about the fireworks? or…
@urararara: subtlety is a LOST ART, sir.
The subtlety - or lack thereof - only worsened in Iida’s Instagram stories. On any given day, there were three to ten updates featuring the same enigmatic figure. Today’s batch included:
- A video of the guy playing with a chubby cat, scratching its chin and murmuring to it in a soft, low voice.
- A snapshot of two coffee cups on a windowsill with a crystal-clear sky behind them, captioned: “The best way to start a day.”
- A candid of the guy napping by a classroom window, sunlight catching in the messy tufts of violet hair.
- A short clip of a bobblehead cat toy wobbling on a store shelf, captioned: “Will he like this?”
Iida’s broader audience might not have pieced the mystery together, but Class 2-A had zero trouble identifying the subject of his affection. The "purple-haired mystery man" was none other than Shinsou Hitoshi, the transfer student from General Education.
“I’m simply being an attentive class representative,” Iida insisted whenever anyone raised a brow at his suspiciously Shinsou-centric feed. Shinsou had worked hard to integrate himself into the Hero Course, and Iida wanted to showcase his determination and growth. The fact that his Instagram resembled a shrine to Shinsou? A pure coincidence, in his mind.
In the Class 2-A group chat, however, chaos reigned.

alien queen 👽💅: ooooookay, we need to do something about this. i can’t keep watching Iida accidentally soft-launch his boyfriend without realizing it’s a soft launch.
phone charger ⚡️: can we just tell him?
THE astronaut 👩🚀: you’ve met Iida, right? he’d probably give us a ten-point argument about how he’s “not in love” and then post another story of Shinsou five minutes later.
rocky 💪: why not get Shinsou involved?
cats and naps 🐱💤: …involved in what?
alien queen 👽💅: @rocky 💪 see the reason?
hotncold 🔥❄️: this is embarrassing to watch.
BOOMer 💥: speak for yourself, half-and-half. this shit is hilarious.
Meanwhile, in UA’s training gym, Iida stood near the observation deck, clipboard in hand, meticulously noting the results of everyone’s combat drills. His posture was straight, his gaze unwavering - though it lingered just a little too long on one particular sparring match.
Shinsou Hitoshi, paired with Monoma from Class 1-B, was an impressive sight to behold. Monoma’s quirk added an unpredictable element to their session, but Shinsou handled it with his usual unflappable composure, adjusting his stance and tactics with almost eerie precision. He moved with a calm efficiency that was… captivating.
“Dude,” Kaminari’s voice broke into Iida’s concentration. The blond leaned lazily against the railing, a mischievous grin plastered across his face. “You’ve been staring at Shinsou for, like, twenty minutes.”
“I’m observing,” Iida replied, his tone defensive. “As class representative, it is my duty to evaluate our team’s progress.”
Kaminari raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. “Sure. And that video of him playing with a cat yesterday? Was that a tactical evaluation too?”
Iida froze, his pen hovering over the clipboard. “That was - ! Shinsou has a calming presence that promotes teamwork. It was a valuable insight.”
“Mhm,” Kaminari said, his smirk widening. “Totally professional.”
Below, Monoma clapped Shinsou on the back as the sparring wrapped up. “Not bad, Hitoshi. Not bad at all. You’re getting faster with that scarf technique.”
“Thanks,” Shinsou replied, casually brushing a hand through his messy purple hair.
Iida felt a faint twinge of… something. He dismissed it with a sharp shake of his head.
That evening, the uncomfortable sensation lingered. It worsened when Iida entered the dorm common room to find Shinsou and Kaminari sitting on the couch, laughing together over something on Kaminari’s phone.
“What’s so funny?” Iida asked, his voice unintentionally sharper than intended.
Kaminari glanced up, still chuckling. “We were just watching cat videos. Shinsou said this one reminded him of Aizawa-sensei.” He tilted the screen toward Iida, showing a video of a grumpy Persian cat swaddled in a blanket.
Shinsou raised an eyebrow at Iida. “You okay? You seem… tense.”
“I am perfectly fine,” Iida replied stiffly, sitting down in an armchair and adjusting his glasses with an air of finality.
He was not fine. Watching Shinsou laugh so freely with Kaminari gnawed at him, leaving a sour taste in his mouth.
THE astronaut 👩🚀: update: i think Iida’s jealous. he glared at Kaminari like he wanted to ban him from cat videos!
phone charger ⚡️: he was mad because I ✨ exist ✨
alien queen 👽💅: OMG, it’s happening!!! jealousy phase unlocked.
rocky 💪: wait, is this progress? or a disaster?
BOOMer 💥: this is gonna be so good
The next day, Mina decided it was time to nudge Iida toward some self-awareness.
During training, she sidled up beside him as they watched Shinsou and Kaminari spar. “Shinsou’s really good at analyzing opponents, huh?” she said casually, her tone light and conversational. “Like, he totally gets what makes people tick.”
Iida nodded, scribbling notes on his clipboard. “Indeed. His strategic thinking has improved significantly since joining the Hero Course.”
Mina tilted her head, a sly smile creeping onto her face. “Yeah, it’s the kind of skill you’d want in a partner, right?”
“Precisely,” Iida replied without missing a beat. “A partner in combat is essential for - wait.” He stopped, eyes narrowing suspiciously. “What are you implying?”
Mina shrugged innocently. “Nothing. Just saying he’s partner material.”
Iida opened his mouth to argue but closed it again, clearly unsure of how to respond. Mina hid her triumphant grin behind her hand.
Later, during lunch, Kaminari took his turn.
“So, Iida,” he said between bites of rice, “you ever thought about what kind of person you’d date?”
Iida blinked, caught off guard by the abrupt question. “I haven’t given it much consideration,” he said, adjusting his glasses to buy himself a moment.
“Really?” Mina cut in, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Because you’ve been, like, super interested in Shinsou lately. Just saying.”
“I am interested in his growth as a hero,” Iida said firmly, though the faint pink tinge on his cheeks betrayed him.
“Uh-huh,” Mina said, leaning forward with a grin. “Whatever you say.”
As Iida turned back to his meal with an air of exaggerated calm, Mina and Kaminari exchanged a look. Phase one of Operation Self-Awareness: complete.
Over the next few days, Iida’s carefully maintained composure began to unravel. He couldn’t explain the gnawing sensation in his chest every time he saw Shinsou spending time with others. It was illogical, irrational - but utterly persistent.
One afternoon, Iida spotted Shinsou and Todoroki training together again in Gym Gamma. They stood off to the side, deeply engrossed in a discussion about Todoroki’s quirk. Shinsou nodded thoughtfully at something Todoroki said, his expression unusually animated.
Iida’s jaw tightened as he stared longer than necessary.
“Hey, you okay, man?” Kirishima asked, giving him a friendly nudge. “You’re, uh, kinda glaring.”
“I am not glaring!” Iida snapped, though his voice was a little too sharp. He turned back to his clipboard, scribbling furiously to mask the tightness in his chest.
Later that evening, it happened again. Iida walked into the common room to find Shinsou and Kaminari on the couch, laughing over something on Kaminari’s phone. They were sharing a pair of earbuds, their shoulders brushing as they leaned close.
“It’s just a video,” Iida murmured to himself, gripping his notebook like it might fly away. “There’s no reason to feel… to feel…”
But he didn’t finish the sentence. How could he, when he didn’t even understand what he was feeling?
The Class 2-A group chat buzzed with updates as Mina finalized their intervention plans.
alien queen 👽💅: it’s time. he’s officially losing itttt
phone charger ⚡️: i almost feel bad for him. almost
THE astronaut 👩🚀: nah, he’s gotta face the music. this is character development!
rocky 💪: LET’S GOOOO
That evening, the class, minus Shinsou, assembled in the common room, ready to stage their intervention. Iida sat stiffly on the couch, his ever-present clipboard conspicuously absent. His classmates surrounded him like a jury about to deliver a verdict.
Mina leaned forward, her hands steepled dramatically. “So, Iida… You’ve been looking peachy these days. Any idea why?”
“I am not peachy,” Iida replied with a frown.
“Oooookay,” Uraraka said, her tone light but probing. “But have you noticed anything… different? Like, how you felt when you saw Shinsou and Monoma training the other day?”
Iida tilted his head thoughtfully. “I suppose I felt that they work well together. As they have on numerous occasions.”
Mina raised an eyebrow. “Aaaaand?”
“And,” Iida continued, adjusting his glasses, “I suppose I aspire to be someone like that for Shinsou as well. For educational purposes, of course. So we can develop our quirks professionally.”
“Yeah, right,” Uraraka muttered, rolling her eyes.
Mina groaned, rubbing her temples. “Okay, new approach. Think of Shinsou.”
“I… am already thinking of Shinsou,” Iida replied cautiously, unsure where this was going.
“Good. Now imagine Shinsou going out with Monoma,” Mina said with deliberate slowness.
Iida blinked, looking thoroughly baffled. “For what purpose?”
“Like… dating,” Mina clarified with exaggerated patience.
Iida’s eyes widened in shock. “Why would he do that?!”
“Just imagine!!!” Mina insisted, throwing her hands up.
“I can’t! It’s illogical!” Iida protested.
“ Just. Do. It! ” Mina said, nearly shouting.
Uraraka stepped in, her tone calm and instructional. “Alright, step by step. Imagine Shinsou.”
“…Alright,” Iida said hesitantly.
“Now imagine his hand,” Uraraka prompted.
“…Okay,” Iida replied, his expression uncertain.
“Now he’s holding hands with Monoma,” Uraraka said.
Iida’s jaw tightened slightly, though he didn’t speak.
Midoriya, quiet until now, suddenly chimed in. “He’s buying crepes to share with Monoma!”
Iida’s brow furrowed deeply, his grip on his knees tightening.
Sero leaned over to Kaminari, whispering, “Dude, I can see the veins popping on his forehead.”
Yaoyorozu added helpfully, “And then they go into a café, drinking tea and chatting about their day.”
Iida’s expression darkened further.
Asui tilted her head, her voice soft but deliberate. “Then they’re shopping for scarves together. It’s getting cold. Ribbit.”
Mina leaned forward, her grin wicked as she delivered the final blow. “And then Monoma walks Shinsou back to the dorm… and leans in - ”
“Enough!” Iida shouted, standing abruptly. His voice carried a rare note of desperation. “I get it! Stop! I…”
The room fell silent as Iida slumped back into his seat, rubbing his temples. His voice was quieter now, almost pained. “I… I’m a terrible friend. I don’t want Shinsou to go on a date with anyone else.”
“Okay,” Uraraka said, calmly. “Repeat that. Slowly.”
Iida stared at her, confusion giving way to a growing sense of horror. “…I don’t want Shinsou to go on a date with anyone else…”
Mina clasped her hands together, vibrating with excitement. “Again. Slower.”
“…I don’t want Shinsou to go on a date with anyone… else…” Iida whispered, his voice barely audible now.
His eyes widened as realization hit him like a runaway train. “Else?!”
The room exploded in laughter and cheers. Kaminari whooped loudly, and Mina clapped her hands like a victorious coach.
“Finally!” Uraraka said, grinning as she patted Iida on the back. “There it is.”
Mina threw her arms around Kaminari, laughing. “This is so going in the group chat.”
The next few days were nothing short of agonizing. Now that Iida had finally acknowledged his feelings for Shinsou, he couldn’t stop noticing him. Every interaction felt magnified, as though someone had turned up the brightness and contrast of Iida’s world, making Shinsou impossible to ignore.
It was a normal breakfast in the dormitory kitchen. Iida had just sat down with his meticulously prepared meal when Shinsou wandered in, his hair sticking out at odd angles, clearly not yet awake. He yawned, stretching lazily as he poured himself a cup of coffee.
“Morning, Iida,” Shinsou mumbled, his voice raspy from sleep.
Iida froze mid-bite. “G-Good morning, Shinsou!” he replied, his tone overly bright and stiff. He watched, transfixed, as Shinsou shuffled over to the table and leaned one elbow on it, blowing on his coffee before taking a slow sip.
The moment felt oddly domestic, and Iida’s heart stuttered at the thought of mornings like this every day. His grip on his fork tightened.
“Something wrong?” Shinsou asked, raising an eyebrow.
“N-Nothing at all!” Iida blurted, stabbing his eggs a little too forcefully. Shinsou shrugged and took another sip, oblivious to the turmoil he’d just caused.
Another incident came the next day, during lunch. Shinsou had mentioned, offhandedly, that he was thinking of feeding the campus stray cats after class. His eyes lit up as he described one particular cat - a grumpy tabby with a missing ear that he’d named “Bandit.”
“I swear, Bandit’s warming up to me. He let me pet him for, like, a whole thirty seconds last time,” Shinsou said, his voice animated in a way Iida rarely saw.
Iida’s grip on his chopsticks faltered. He had no idea why, but the thought of Shinsou crouched in the cold, coaxing a scrappy stray cat to eat from his hand, made Iida want to… hug him . Or squeeze him. Or something.
“You’re amazing,” Iida blurted before he could stop himself.
Shinsou blinked, clearly startled. “Uh… thanks?”
Iida quickly looked down at his tray, his face blazing. “I-I meant that it is commendable to show such compassion toward animals! It is a fine example of heroism.”
Shinsou gave him a half-smile. “If you say so, Iida.”
Iida wanted to scream into a pillow.
By the third day, Iida’s feelings had become a constant, overwhelming hum in the back of his mind. Every time Shinsou spoke, every time he smiled, every time he leaned back in his chair with that casual, unbothered air, Iida felt like he might short-circuit.
He tried to focus on his responsibilities, but even that was impossible when Shinsou looked at him like that - steady and curious, like he was waiting for Iida to say something important.
He didn’t know how much longer he could keep this up.
And to make matters worse, his classmates were clearly onto him.
alien queen 👽💅: GUYS. He’s in full meltdown mode
phone charger ⚡️: Shinsou just has to exist and Iida glitches
THE astronaut 👩🚀: i saw him drop his pen earlier when Shinsou stretches

BOOMer 💥: 500 yen says he confesses by the end of the week
phone charger ⚡️: make it 1000. i believe in him!!!
Iida, meanwhile, was unaware of the bets being placed on his inevitable confession. But he was very aware that his carefully constructed walls were crumbling fast. Something had to give - and soon.
The breaking point came one crisp Saturday afternoon. The class had split into smaller groups for free time, and Iida found himself wandering the courtyard alone. His usual schedule of meticulous planning and efficient use of time had unraveled into restless pacing.
He froze when he heard Shinsou’s voice. Turning the corner, he spotted him sitting on a bench, laughing with Midoriya. They were leaning close, Midoriya gesturing animatedly as Shinsou nodded along.
Something inside Iida snapped.
It wasn’t logical. It wasn’t rational. But it was undeniable. The thought of Shinsou sharing his quiet, rare smiles with anyone else - it hurt. And for Iida, that was unacceptable.
That evening, after hours of pacing in his own room and rehearsing half-formed speeches, Iida finally made his decision. He stood outside Shinsou’s dorm room, his fist hovering near the door. From inside, the faint thrum of soft indie music filtered through - gentle, introspective tones that somehow felt perfectly suited to Shinsou.
Iida drew a deep breath, adjusted his glasses, and knocked.
“Come in,” Shinsou called, his voice lazily muffled through the door.
Iida stepped inside, closing the door softly behind him. The room was dimly lit, the only source of illumination the galaxy projector casting constellations across the ceiling. Shinsou’s bed was neatly made, the enormous cat plushie Iida had gifted him sitting comfortably in one corner. A shelf held an assortment of cat toys, neatly arranged but clearly used. In the corner stood Shinsou’s bike, polished and perfectly parked, alongside some equipment.
Shinsou was sprawled across his bed, a book resting open on his chest. He glanced up as Iida entered, his expression calm but curious. “Hey, Rep. What’s up?”
Iida’s throat went dry at the casual intimacy of the scene - the cozy lighting, the soft music, the relaxed way Shinsou’s head tilted as he waited for Iida to speak. His pulse thundered in his ears. He cleared his throat, stepping into the center of the room with stiff, deliberate movements.
“Shinsou,” Iida began, his voice louder than he intended. He immediately winced and lowered it, his hands clenching nervously at his sides. “I… There is something I need to say. Something important.”
Shinsou raised an eyebrow, sitting up and setting his book aside. “Go for it.”
Iida hesitated, his hands fidgeting with the hem of his uniform jacket. His heart pounded like a war drum, his words catching in his throat. “I have always admired your dedication to becoming a hero,” he began carefully, his words steady but his voice trembling slightly. “Your strategic thinking, your ability to remain calm under pressure - it’s truly remarkable.”
Shinsou tilted his head slightly, like a cat inspecting something it didn’t quite understand. Normally, the sight would have made Iida’s heart skip a beat, but it was already hammering so hard it was a miracle it hadn’t stopped altogether.
“But,” Iida pressed on, gripping the edges of his jacket like a lifeline, “recently, I have come to realize that my admiration is… not limited to professional respect.”
Shinsou blinked, his confusion evident. “Uh… okay?”
Iida’s face burned, but he forced himself to keep going. He had come this far, and he would see it through. “What I mean to say is… my feelings for you are not purely platonic. I value you deeply - not just as a classmate or a teammate, but as someone I…” He swallowed hard, his glasses slipping slightly as he bowed his head. “…as someone I care for. Romantically.”
The silence that followed felt infinite, stretching out into every corner of the dimly lit room. But before Iida could retreat, he forced himself to speak again, words spilling out in a desperate rush.
“I notice little things, too,” he confessed, his eyes fixed firmly on the carpet. “Like how your hands are slender but steady when you tie your capture weapon, and how gentle they are when you pet the stray cats. The way your hair is unruly in the mornings but somehow so endearingly cute.”
He swallowed hard, his heart a painful thrum in his chest. “I want to treasure those things. I never expected to feel this way, but… I do. And I - I wanted you to know. Even if you don’t feel the same.”
The silence returned, wrapping around them like a thick blanket. Iida stood frozen, his hands curled into fists, certain he had ruined everything.
Then Shinsou chuckled softly, the sound breaking through the tension like the first drops of rain on a dry summer day.
“Wow,” Shinsou said, his tone warm and teasing. “Took you long enough.”
Iida’s head snapped up, his composure shattering. “What?!”
Shinsou smiled, standing from the bed and closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate steps. “Rep, your Instagram is practically a shrine to me. How could I not know?”
Iida opened his mouth to protest, but Shinsou reached out, wrapping his fingers gently around Iida’s wrist. “Relax. For the record, I like you too.”
The words landed softly, yet they carried enough weight to completely unravel the knot in Iida’s chest. Relief flooded him, and his shoulders sagged. “…You do?”
“Yeah, I do.” Shinsou’s smile widened slightly, his usual sharp edges softening.
Without waiting for Iida to respond, Shinsou tugged his wrist, pulling him gently toward the bed. “C’mere, Rep,” he murmured, his tone casual but laced with warmth.
Iida stumbled slightly as Shinsou guided him, his legs moving on autopilot. Before he could fully process what was happening, he found himself lying beside Shinsou on the bed, his head cushioned by the soft comforter. The galaxy lights swirled above them, casting shifting patterns across the ceiling and their faces.
Shinsou shifted closer, draping an arm loosely over Iida’s chest in a quiet, grounding gesture. Iida knew, without a doubt, that Shinsou could feel his heartbeat pounding wildly beneath his touch. Every graze of Shinsou’s hand sent his pulse into overdrive, making it impossible to ignore the warmth spreading through his chest.
“You don’t have to overthink it, y’know,” Shinsou murmured, his voice steady and calm, like a soothing balm for Iida’s frantic nerves. “I like you. You don’t need a ten-point presentation to convince me.”
Iida’s breath hitched, his body tensing for a brief moment before he finally allowed himself to relax into Shinsou’s touch. The tension melted from his shoulders as he let out a shaky exhale.
“I…” Iida began, his voice unsteady, the words catching in his throat. “I’m not very experienced in this… dating thing. To be honest, I have no idea what I’m doing.”
Shinsou chuckled softly, the sound low and warm as he rested his chin lightly on Iida’s shoulder. “Relax, Rep. Just being here with you sounds perfect already.”
Shinsou’s words settled something deep inside Iida, who turned his head hesitantly to meet Shinsou’s gaze.
Shinsou had nestled into the crook of his shoulder, looking up at him with an expression so tender it made Iida’s heart ache. The quiet adoration in Shinsou’s eyes was unmistakable, like Iida was the only person in the world worth looking at. The realization hit him all at once: Shinsou had been looking at him like that all along.
The weight of it made Iida’s chest swell, his heart thudding now for an entirely different reason. Slowly, hesitantly, he leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to Shinsou’s lavender hair, his lips brushing against the strands he had admired from afar so many times before.
It was exactly as he had imagined it would be - soft, warm, and grounding in a way that defied words. Emboldened by the moment, Iida pressed another kiss to Shinsou’s forehead, lingering just long enough to feel the soft skin against his lips, savoring the quiet intimacy of the gesture.
Shinsou’s arm tightened slightly around his chest, drawing him closer. A quiet hum of contentment escaped him, muffled but unmistakably warm. “See?” he murmured, his voice carrying a teasing lilt. “You’re already perfect at this.”
Iida’s lips curved into a small, bashful smile, his heart swelling anew. The knot of uncertainty that had once gripped him so tightly had completely unraveled, replaced by a quiet, unshakable joy.
For a while, they lay together in peaceful silence, the soft swirl of the galaxy lights above and the faint strains of music filling the room. Iida allowed himself to revel in the moment, Shinsou’s steady presence grounding him in a way he hadn’t known he needed.
Then, breaking the silence, Iida spoke. “So… what’s with you and Monoma?”
Shinsou lifted his head slightly, arching an eyebrow. “Monoma? What about him?”
Iida hesitated, the tips of his ears turning red. “You… you seemed close during training. And the way you were talking with him - ”
Shinsou blinked before a slow grin spread across his face. “Oh, that’s what this is about.” He shifted slightly, propping himself up on one elbow to look directly at Iida. “Rep, are you jealous?”
“I - !” Iida spluttered, his face heating to an alarming degree. “So what is it between you two?!”
Shinsou laughed, the sound low and warm as he leaned in closer. “Relax. Monoma’s got that whole arrogant, bad-boy vibe,” he said, his grin softening into something more genuine. “But me? I’ve always had a thing for good boys.”
Iida’s breath hitched, his cheeks flushing a deep crimson. “Good boys?” he echoed, his voice slightly higher-pitched than usual.
Shinsou’s grin widened, amusement dancing in his eyes. “Yeah,” he said, his tone turning teasing as he reached up to gently adjust the glasses slipping down Iida’s nose. “You know, the kind who dedicates his entire Instagram feed to featuring me. ”
Iida froze, caught between embarrassment and the overwhelming rush of affection that swept over him. His hands clenched reflexively at his sides before he finally managed to stammer, “That’s… good to hear, then.”
Shinsou chuckled lightly, his expression softening as he settled back into Iida’s shoulder with a content sigh. Iida felt the last of his tension melt away as they lay there, the soft glow of the galaxy lights swirling above them, cocooned in the quiet comfort of each other’s presence.
