Sango turned the monster ball in her hand, staring at it with a half-lidded frown.
"That thing is definitely not a Purin," Onyx mumbled from the other side of the bonfire.
"Of course not. Didn't I just tell you? She's 'Onipurin'."
He leered at her. "I mean to say you're gonna need to dedicate time to getting to know it. Not just treat it like a regular Purin."
"Yeah, exactly like with every other pokémon in existence", Coral scowled at him, then turned to lie on her side facing the cliff they were camping by. "How dumb do you think I am?"
Onyx didn't answer.
She went back to fidgeting with the ball she'd thrown at Onipurin earlier.
Sango hadn't meant to catch her, is the thing. She still wasn't sure how it'd happened. Had Onipurin been caught off-guard by her throwing something?
But that's not how catching pokémon works, is it? They have to want to get caught, or something. She wouldn't know, she'd never caught any before; Onigohri was her first partner, gifted to her when she'd joined the Explorers, and it's not like either of them had a say in the matter.
(She'd grown very fond of him since, though. He was her cutest bestest funnest friend.)
This was... different. A weird feeling squirmed in her stomach about it, and it sure wasn't hunger because she was very familiar with what that felt like. She didn't know what to think of it. A second partner pokémon. One she'd caught herself, not assigned to her. Pokémon must want to be caught by a trainer in order to stay in the pokéball.
She pouted. It just didn't add up! What is Onipurin's deal?! This weird, loud, pink, puffy... thing! How dare she choose Sango, of all people?! Why?! It didn't make any sense! And now she had another pokémon to take care of! What a hassle!
... oh well. At least following that annoying Liko and her annoying friends around wouldn't be as boring now.
The strange new feeling settled warm and achy in Sango's chest, and it would be a while before she found sleep.
