The moon rose high in the night sky,accompanied by a hundred dozen stars.Normally, Nyssa would be forced to be in her camp bunk by now, but she managed to evade her counselor. She loved walking around the camp at nighttime, she had always enjoyed the peace and quiet. She didn’t like people much,like her father. Her father wasn’t really known for his empathy or kindness, and she was the same way. She was the exact opposite when it comes to her family and or the people she loves. She was stuck in her thoughts as she felt someone knock onto her. Not into her, onto her, like they fell from the sky. She was knocked to the ground, with the person on top of her. The other person cursed to themselves,out of embarrassment. Nyssa looked up at them, and with the moon shining in the background,the person looked ethereal.
At first,Nyssa didn’t realize who the person was. She didn’t think she would ever recognize them,if they hadn’t spoken.the voice was calming but also strong at the same time. The sound felt familiar,like she had heard it before. Nyssa gazed into the dark doe eyes of the person on top of her.The person gazed back into Nyssa’s lighter ones with a cold glare. As Nyssa continued to stare,she noticed that the glare she was receiving was forced. Her mind finally recognized the person above her, she was confused about it though. Why was she in a tree,especially the tallest tree in the forest? Was she running something or someone? It didn’t make sense, she of all people would never do this.
She hated getting dirty and she hated nature even more. Nyssa was snapped out of her thoughts when she heard a loud bang a few hundred feet away.The person’s body immediately tensed and became alert. “ Oh come on honey~ You can’t hide from your father forever!”
A deep voice rang out,throughout the forest.Nyssa was heavily confused and she looked back up at the girl on top of her. The girl had a looked of pure unbridled terror written on her face. She scrambled to get off of Nyssa ,and she looked around nervously. She grabbed Nyssa’s calloused hands and dragged her though the forest. As they ran deeper into the forest, the trees and bushes became darker and more mangled.
When she couldn’t hear her fathers voice anymore,she stopped. Nyssa was forced to a halt and knocked into the other girl’s back. She was utterly and purely confused about what just happened. The other girl turned around to face Nyssa,with a stern look. “You will say nothing about this incident and definitely nothing about why I was here. Got it?” The girl ordered coldly,but her voice hid a hint of vulnerability.
Nyssa hesitated before nodding in agreement. She truly was confused why she was in the woods. “ Wait.Mrs.Popular. Why is a girl like you in the woods? Especially these ones.”
The girl went quiet,but she wasn’t mad or upset. She was debating on what information to tell her and what not to tell her. Finally after a few moments of silence, she sighs. “Sometimes you have to do what you gotta do.”
Nyssa fell silent,thinking about the girl’s answer. She had so many questions. “ First of all, that response was incredibly vague. So, were you chased..or…?” Nyssa’s voice trailed off , and she waited patiently for the girl’s response.
The girl fell silent again, she did look down.she was weighing the pros and cons of telling Nyssa what happened. “ Why do you care?” She asked,coldly. She was genuinely wondering why Nyssa cared. She had done nothing but be mean to Nyssa and her friends.She didn’t know that anyone cared about her, it’s not like she has done anything good in her life. Nyssa’s expression softened when she processed her question.
“ Of course I care about you. Whether we like it or not, you’re a special person to me,Drew” Nyssa admits softly. She didn’t always understand what Drew does or why she does it but she knew that Drew would always have a special place in her heart.
“Why?” Drew mutters, her expression was soft and vulnerable, which was new. Nyssa looked at Drew ,tenderly. “Because, you’re so prominent in my life, and I couldn’t imagine you not in it.” Drew thought about what Nyssa had said , she was more confused than ever. She stayed silent , but she looked at Nyssa. Her eyes gleamed with unsaid words, and confusion. She didn’t trust her voice to speak,well not English anyways. She knew Nyssa not only was a Latina but also she was fluent in Spanish
“ Nyssa, yo… no lo sé. Quiero decir, tengo cosas horribles contigo y tus amigos. ¿Por qué sería tan importante para ti?” Drew muttered that phrase in Spanish,and Nyssa sighed.
“ English or Spanish?” Drew shrugged,signalling that she in fact did not care. Nyssa shrugged and decided to speak in English.Nyssa thought about her answer and she knew that if she said certain things, then it would not end well. After a few moments,she decided on an answer.
“ Well,it’s because I’ve seen all sides of you and decided to love them all. Mean,nice,hurt,jealous, it doesn’t matter what you’re doing, or feeling, I will always care for you. It’s not easy for some people.” Nyssa paused,she tried to gauge Drew’s reactions but she couldn’t.Drew’s face was unreadable but Nyssa could tell she was listening. Drew took a deep breath,and sighed.
“Continue. I wanna hear what you have to say.” Drew says as she gazes into Nyssa’s warm brown eyes.Nyssa gazed back into Drew’s hazel ones, at this point they kinda looked green. Nyssa smiles softly and she nods.
“ Okay. You know how people look into the mirror and have kind of a distorted vision when it comes to their bodies?” Immediately after asking that question, Nyssa regretted it. Not because of Drew’s answer, but because of how she would have reacted. Drew was intrigued, and she leaned forward.
“ I do. However, what does that have to do with our situation?” Drew asked,quietly. Nyssa knew Drew would ask that question. That’s why she basically cursed herself for asking for it
. “ I’m going to explain it. Okay, so it’s like the mirror thing because you have brought yourself so much hate that you cant see when someone clearly cares about you. Or you don’t believe that I actually care about you because ‘Why would someone like her care about me?’. Am I right on the nail?” Nyssa says,her voice coming on a little strong. Drew took those words to heart, not because of how strong Nyssa’s voice is but instead because of who said them. Drew couldn’t lie and say that Nyssa meant nothing to her. Nyssa meant the world to Drew but Drew couldn’t believe she actually cared about her. Why would she? I mean-
“ You’re thinking. What are you being so thoughtful about?” Nyssa’s voice snapped Drew out of her thoughts, and Drew looked at Nyssa again. “ You’re right. I don’t believe you.” Drew admits,painfully. Her voice betrayed her,even though it was steady, Nyssa could sense a lot of vulnerability in it.
“ I mean we are on totally different cliques. I’m a cheerleader and you own a band. I’m supposed to be dating a tall jock and having babies with him,But-” Drew started to rant and Nyssa interjected her. “You don’t want to,do you?” Nyssa asks. Drew nods.
“ It’s not about what I want,it’s about what my parents expect. If my Dad found out I kiss girls, he would take all of my electronics away,take me out of school, home-school me for a year, then kick me out if I don’t change.” Drew ranted and Nyssa listened.That’s all Drew needed right now.
“ That’s not right. Don’t let him find out. I mean , not before you move out.” Nyssa Suggested and Drew nods. “ Plus what if it’s just infatuation? What if you’re not attracted to girls? Have you ever kissed a girl?” Nyssa asked,Drew’s expression became thoughtful.She shook her head, and Nyssa raised her eyebrow.
“ Do you wanna know for sure?” Nyssa asked.Drew’s eyes widened and her cheeks become rosy. She bit her lip and thought about it. I mean, she is offering. Nyssa’s lips looked really soft. I haven’t kissed a girl,and the girl in front of me is really tempting. Drew was snapped out of her thoughts because of a bird chirping loudly. She looks at Nyssa and smiles softly.She leans closer and she places her soft lips on Nyssa’s. The kiss was soft and gentle.Nyssa felt Drew’s soft hands cup her face as Drew pulled away.Her eyes gazed into Drew’s pretty brown ones. What? Wait. Since when does She have brown eyes? They normally look green in School. Nyssa gazed into Drew’s eyes again and they were green again.
“ Why do your eyes keep shifting?” Nyssa asked,as Drew internally panicked. She didn’t know why. They just kinda always shifted. Her dad didn’t like them so he had her get green contacts.
“I don’t know why.they’ve always shifted like that but my father makes me wear green contacts.” Drew confessed. She refused to look at Nyssa. Nyssa smiles,she admired the fact that out of everything that was perfect with Drew,she still had some flaws. Nyssa also thought that no matter what color Drew’s eyes were,they would always be beautiful to her. Drew gazed into Nyssa’s eyes sadly. She hated how her own eyes looked,and was envious of Nyssa’s.
“What’s on your mind,Darling?” Nyssa asked,her voice soft but probing. Drew appreciated her tone of voice. Although,she was still reluctant to share her insecurity with someone she barely knew. Not only that,but her and Nyssa aren’t even supposed to be talking. Drew was a cheerleader and well Nyssa hung out with the nerds, total different sides of the spectrum of the high-school social classes. She disentangled from Nyssa and sighs.
“I’m sorry,I can’t. I just can’t.” she says as she stood up and was full on ready to bolt out of there. “Wait! Drew-” Nyssa couldn’t finish her sentence before Drew was gone. She was left there in the forest,trying to think of a reason why Drew left.
She smiles at the kiss they shared though. Her fingers touched her lips,still not believing that they kissed. She never thought this situation would ever happen to her. Yes,she’s attractive but she’s not popular in the slightest.
Her gut is telling her that this won’t be the last meeting they will have, she hopes her intuition is right. She stood up and started walking back from where she came from.
