Lexa's arrival stuns Clarke, distracting her enough that she's unable to dodge the next shot.
"Clarke." Lexa whispers her name in a breath, Clarke looks back at the brunette, not understanding the horrified look on her face, until she follows her line of sight to her own body.
A blood stain forms just below her chest, the daze gives way to understanding and then pain, she's barely able to put her hand over the wound before her body gives way and hits the ground.
Before she falls straight to the ground she feels firm arms holding her, looking up she sees Lexa's eyes fixed on hers, they are full of unshed tears and she tries to raise her hand to touch the commander's face, but a coughing fit overcomes her before she can.
She tastes blood as she coughs and feels it dripping from her mouth, while the adrenaline in her body subsides and she begins to feel the pain of having her chest pierced by a bullet.
She can feel the commotion in the room and vaguely hears orders being given, but she focuses on Lexa, her hair is still loose, her eyes are shining with tears and her mouth still looks a little swollen from the kisses they had exchanged a few minutes ago.
The blonde knows that her chance of survival is lower than 10% at this moment, so she does not fight against the fatigue that dominates her entire body.
Gathering some strength, she raises her arm and touches Lexa's face, who was shouting orders to her warriors.
"If this is going to be my end, at least I'm happy that it's in the arms of a beautiful woman." she tries to joke, her voice comes out hoarse and tired.
" Mockery is not the product of a strong mind, Clarke." Lexa tries to sound stern, but her voice betrays her, failing and showing her emotions. " This is not your end, the healers are coming, hold on tight. "
" You know as well as I do that it won't work. "
" Moba, Clarke. " Lexa's voice trembles, her tears are no longer contained and roll down the brunette's face.
" It's okay," another coughing fit overcomes her and Clarke knows her time is running out. " Ai gonplei ste odon. "
Clarke's hand begins to slip and Lexa covers it with hers, holding it against her face, she remembers one of her moments with Clarke in her tent as they prepared for war against the mountain.
- " How do you say goodbye to your dead? “
- “ We say to each other:
" May you leave the earth in peace, may you find your next one in love." Lexa can see a slight surprised sparkle in Clarke's eyes, she even wants to smile, but the fragility and pain that is in her body prevents her from doing more than sighing as she continues. "A safe passage on your next travels... Until our last journey on solid ground. That we meet again."
A tear runs down Clarke's eye and Lexa approaches to give her one last kiss.
She moves away just a little, her forehead touches Clarke's and with her eyes closed she whispers: I love you, there hodnes.
It seemed like time had stopped at that moment, but it was only Clarke's body that had stopped fighting, Lexa hugs her lifeless body tightly while desolate sobs escape her throat, she feels as if a hole has been opened in her chest just like Clarke's and she doesn't know if it will ever stop hurting.
