He lay there, on his deathbed. Friends and family surrounding him, his son lying against his side and holding on tightly as the last glimmer of life escaped Marvin's soul. He began tearing up, knowing these were his last moments with his loved ones.
When Jason noticed his father's breathing hitch and his body shaking, he lifted his head off of Marvin's chest to look at him. Marvin weakly wrapped his arms around his son, gently stroking his hair as tears started falling from his eyes.
"Jason... spend your life better than I have... Find the people you love most, and stick with them through everything. Don't let them go, no matter what... they'll always be by your side... Tell them how much you love them every day.... Do good in school, get a great job, and then you're free to do whatever your heart desires... The world is yours, do something good with it. I love you, kid."
Marvin spoke slowly and soft, having to catch his breath after every few words as his lungs decayed. Jason was tearing up now too, leaning into his fathers touch as he listened to his last words of advice.
"I promise I will, I promise... I love you too, papa..." Jason replied, tears streaming down his face as he laid back down on his fathers chest and held on tightly, as if holding onto Marvin's last bit of life and trying to keep it there with them. Marvin returned the embrace, holding his son tightly as he breathed out his last few breaths.
He closed his eyes, the beeping on the monitor slowly dying out as his arms started slipping down Jason's sides. He started crying harder as he felt his father slip away, that heartbreaking tone deafening him.
