Chapter Text
"Give him over, Dean." John said, tone that of an order but not cruel or mean. He knew how hard this was for his boy.
He held his hands out and the blubber Dean clung all the more to the baby in his arms. John sighed as he knelt down by his son.
"Its time to say goodbye, Dean." He said softly. Softer then he'd ever talked to Dean. Even before his mom died.
"B-but... S...S-sammy will be all alone." He managed to sniffle out. John was fighting off tears himself. The nun to the side looked on in sympathy and waited patiently.
"He won't Dean. He'll grow up with plenty of friends and a new happy family that will take him in. He'll be just fine Dean." John said rubbing his head. Dean wailed so hard his chest shook and he almost coughed from the force of it.
"Tell him goodbye, Dean." John said, giving him one more chance. Knowing this was coming for the last couple months wasn't near enough time apparently.
Whatever Dean let out as a good bye was too sobby to determine the words. The young toddler hugging Sam and kissing his head repeatedly like his mom and dad had done for him during goodbyes before. John moving forward to wrap arms under Sam. Dean collapsing to his knees when his dad finally took him away. Actually coughing now from the force of his cries. John allowed him his tantrum.
John moved over to sister Agnus and gently placed Sam into her arms. She held the little boy as comfortably as she could. Looking over at Dean with deep pity in her eyes.
"You two are always welcome to visit." She said not for the first time. Wanting John to know his boy was always welcome to see his brother. John smiled in gratitude but in such a way that it was clear he wouldn't be taking up the offer. She sighed sadly at that. Wondering not for the first time why he didn't just leave both the young children in their care. Clearly they'd be happier together then apart. If you couldn't take care of a baby how much hope was there of you taking care of a 4 year old?
"Come on, Dean." John said, picking the boy up and heaving him into his arms. Dean clinging tightly to him and weeping all the way. His eyes never leaving his baby brother. It wasn't until later when Sam woke up from his nap did he share in those screams.
The small child, while not fully comprehending, understanding something was very wrong.
