Work Text:
Kotu sat on the boat staring at the strange humans who just united the oceans. They were currently traveling from the human girls island called Motuni or something? He hadn’t been paying attention to be honest, from the constant traveling to the hunger he felt. Many days had passed since they fought the gods and he watched them be reunited with their…he was hungry. He had been eating but his pride was too strong for him to ask for food.
Kakamora could survive for quite the amount of time without food anyways and he had been catching fish whenever he wasn’t feeling horribly…depressed. It hurt. Watching his fathers expression become filled with anguish, become filled with dread. He could not hear it but he could tell that he didn’t condone what Kotu had done…and it hurt because he knew he did something good but…he knew he was thought to be dead and he didn’t know what would happen if he returned. Would father be angry? Upset that he had sacrificed himself for the good of his people? Or worse, would he be disappointed that he made such a rash decision?
He turned slightly watching as Moana, the odd human girl who had maybe turned into a Demi-god walked up to him. He turned his gaze away and clicked. She said something and he couldn’t understand. Well he could but not well, it wasn’t a language he was entirely familiar with, his father hadn’t…he hadn’t been taught the language fully. He listened to her say more before feeling her tap his arm, he pulled his arm away and let out a clicking sound only to hear her keep talking. Something about another island and another thing he couldn’t understand so he merely gave a thumbs up. He heard an exasperated sigh and then he was being talked to in a more annoyed fashion.
He shook his head making it very clear his annoyance when he was grabbed. He turned and then…he froze. An island, nothing incredible about it, he had seen many islands during his wake but it wasn’t the island that piqued his interest or rather his fear, it was the boats. Boats that looked like mountains…boats that were his people’s boats. Out in the distance he could make out his people. He frantically stood up and tilted forward slightly moving to the bow of the ship. A moment and then he was turning to the humans who were smiling. He made a movement and then turned back.
As the boat came closer he could tell that the other Kakamora had turned towards them, had seen the boat and were running around. Cheering. He could see them running and coming to the beach, he was tense. The boat hit the sand and he stood there, he was trained to kill, to assassinate and carry out anything for the good of his people but now he was frozen? And not just frozen but fearful. He forced himself forward and jumped onto the sand watching his people, his family cheer for him, cry for him as he stepped forward…and then they parted. He watched them move away, parting like a sea and there his father was. The two stared at one another and he felt himself stop once more. Father was-
“…Kotu?”
“…I-…”
He started shaking, he could see the Chief, his father bristle. He took a moment and then just before the Chief could say anything thing he ran forward. His feet slammed into the sand as he tripped slightly, stumbling forward and then into his dads arms. It was a tight hug, suffocating and generally something he never let dad do but right now he couldn’t care. He was squeezed tightly and lovingly, it felt amazing.
“Kotu! You-what were you thinking!?”
He was pushed but his shoulders were held. The Chief stared at him and he wiped at his eyes. Chief immediately softened.
“I-we thought you died-!”
His voice cracked and Kotu…hiccuped. He wiped at his eyes and let out a sob.
“I-it was so hard!”
“What-”
“I hurt you and our people and-!”
He choked back a sob.
“I disappointed you and-and I angered you-!”
He was hugged, it was firm and tight.
“You disappointed no one…you saved us all…I wouldn’t have cut the rope, I would never have-…I’m happy Kotu…I’m happy you’re home.”
The two pulled away slightly and then he was being lifted up.
“My son is home!”
Cheers, he was being cheered for as dad lifted him and spun him around. He let out a wet laugh and then he was whooping as well. He was home.
