Work Text:
Mahiru takes the food she made for Haruka to him. He looks up and slightly smiles, Mahiru smiles back and sits next to him. Haruka stares longingly at the food Mahiru made, but doesn’t eat it. “Thank you, Mahiru.” He mumbles, clearly exhausted.
Mahiru wishes Haruka was doing better, that he wasn’t starving himself, but she couldn’t deny how admirable it was to her. Doing something so painful and intense for someone he loves.
She wishes he could stop, though. He was just a kid, and many others loved him, too. Fuuta kept freaking out about it, even Amane’s weird cult shit couldn’t get him to fully relax, and Muu was crying a bit more than usual. She understands, even if she wants Haruka to live.
“You’re welcome,” Mahiru says, Haruka was sitting against his bed, he seemed pretty exhausted. Mahiru didn’t really care, she was staying either way.
“Haruka,” Mahiru started, looking at his face for the first time that day. She frowns a bit at how much more weak he looked. He always looked much skinnier than he should’ve been, Mahiru feels a bit bad for not questioning it. She continues, “are you really going to die so painfully?”
Haruka looks away, but nods, “I want to be useful. Es would feel bad and Muu will be voted innocent...” He trails off as if he wanted to say more, but doesn’t.
“Why do you want Muu to be innocent so badly?” Mahiru asks. Haruka doesn’t respond.
After a while of talking with no response, Mahiru gets up and walks to the door, waving at Haruka.
He waves back, mumbling, “I, uhm, I hope you feel better, Mahiru..” Before going back to sleep.
Mahiru somehow hopes he turns out alright. She hopes that he doesn’t starve himself, but she knows that won’t happen.
—————————
Mahiru hears the sobs before she hears anything else. She wakes up to Muu crying beside her, she vaguely thinks she notices others, but she’s too worried about Muu to care.
“What’s wrong, Muu?” Mahiru asks, yet she thinks she knows the answer.
Muu looks up, “Haruka.. Haruka’s dead.” She sobs, and suddenly Mahiru feels like she might, too.
She doesn’t respond, thinking about how miserable Haruka looked. She feels bad, for Haruka, for Muu, for Es, even.
She falls asleep again, head throbbing in pain and feeling much more miserable than usual.
She’s thankful for the other prisoners.
—————————
Waking up to screams and cries doesn’t help Mahiru’s headache, but she’s far too worried to care. She gets out of bed— something she’s told not to do, since she’s ben getting too weak— and slowly goes to see what happened.
She doesn’t know what to expect, but it’s not Shidou on the floor with blood all around him. Mahiru doesn’t get too surprised when she passes out, whether it was from the fear of death, the grief, or the immense pain. She feels more horrible than usual.
—————————
Mahiru knows she’s dying, but she isn’t sad anymore.
People are around her. She isn’t sure exactly who all is there, but she hopes her friends are.
Everyone seemed so sad, seemed like they loved her. Amane killed Shidou to save her. Kotoko didn’t hate Mahiru. Yuno will miss her, she’s at least sure of that much. She knows others are probably there, but she’s not really thinking. She can’t speak, can barely think, can’t move, and is miserable. She’s happy to die.
She just wishes that this all didn’t have to happen, that Haruka and Shidou could of lived, that Es had their memories and was a normal 15 year old, that she wasn’t attacked, that everyone didn’t have such hard lives.
The last thing she thinks is that she hopes everyone’s lives will get better.
