Brother Zachariah has been summoned to Cirenworth Hall at Alastair’s, his cousin, request. Thomas has been ill for roughly a week and Alastair was worried about him. Brother Zachariah was happy to calm his younger cousin’s worries and concerns. So, he paid them a visit to check on Thomas.
The Silent Brother was ushered into the house by a young maid, named Ruth. She led him to the master bed where Thomas was laying, awake and upright, in bed and Alastair was standing by his side. He was clearly worried about his husband. “Thank you for coming,” Alastair greeted. “Alastair, there was no need to summon a Silent Brother. I am fine,” Thomas argued. “You have been ill. I want to make sure you’re alright.”
“It is no problem at all, Thomas. Making sure Shadowhunters are healthy is one of the tasks I am given.” Thomas relented to his husband’s worries, “Alright. But when it’s nothing, you need to send him back to the Silent City with some goods.”
“Darling, Silent Brothers do not eat.”
Alastair held Thomas’ hand as Brother Zachariah examined and evaluated Thomas. The couple sat on the bed together with worry. After asking questions like symptoms, nausea and fatigue, and details, the nausea comes and goes, but the fatigue is so intense and common Thomas is spending most of his time in bed. He was starting to palpate Thomas’ stomach when he heard the sounds of a soft heartbeat. It was almost like a flutter but it was distinct and separate from Thomas’ own heartbeat. “Apologies for the personal question, but I must ask to fully confirm Thomas’ condition. Have you two been intimate recently?” Thomas squirmed a bit in the bed. Alastair cleared his throat, “We have.” Brother Zachariah gave a slight smile, a feature uncommon for a Silent Brother. “Congratulations Thomas. You’re pregnant.”
“I’m pregnant?,” Thomas questioned. “Yes. You and Alastair are going to be parents.” Thomas let out a deep exhale. Alastair tightened his grip in Thomas’ hand. “How far along am I?”
“You are seven weeks along. The child is due in late June, early July.” Thomas nodded at the answer, taking everything in. “You are still early in your pregnancy, so you will need to be careful but the child appears to be healthy.” Alastair took Thomas into arms, “We’re gonna have a baby.” They held each other as they cried with joy.
A few weeks later, when Thomas is starting to feel better, Alastair and Thomas hosted a dinner with their families, so they may share the news. Thomas was standing in front of their bedroom mirror, smoothing the front of his shirt. It caused his small bump to become visible. “Do you think they’ll notice right away?,” he asked Alastair. Alastair wraps his arms around him, “You’re only ten weeks pregnant. So, your bump is still small and your shirts are loose.” He kissed his cheek, “We will get to announce it ourselves.” A knock at their door alerted them to their families starting to arrive. “Are you feeling alright enough for a family dinner? I can say you’re still not feeling well and I can bring you dinner later.” Thomas took his hand, “I am feeling better,” he went to their dresser and grabbed a small pinch of herb grounds, “Especially thanks to these small herb combinations, courtesy of Brother Zachariah.” He smiled, “I want to tell our family about this baby,” he moved his hand up and down his bump, “I’m not keeping them a secret.” Alastair kissed him, “You’re right,” he sighed, “I think I am just nervous to share this pregnancy that has just been between us.” Thomas smiled, “I know. It’s nice having a special thing between us. But we were going to have to let our families know about this, eventually. Preferably before I give birth.”
Sophie, Gideon, and Eugenia were the first to arrive. “Hi Mama,” Thomas smiled as he hugged her. “Hi, darling,” she hugged him tight. Sophie moved to Alastair as Gideon gave his son a hug, “How are you doing, Thomas?”
“Been alright, Dad.” Gideon smiled, “Good.” Eugenia eyed her little brother before hugging him, “Are you really alright? Not putting on a face for our parents.”
“No, I really am alright.” They all moved to the parlor to have some tea and wait for Alastair’s side of the family to arrive. Alastair gave Thomas a cup of peppermint tea he had brewed specifically for him. Ruth brewed both pots in the kitchen so there was no way for eyebrows to be raised. She also gave Alastair Thomas’, and his, cup to avoid a mix-up. The rest of the cups were handed out to the Lightwoods.
Sona and Zachary, who was now five years old, arrived along with James, Cordelia, and their three year old son, Owen. Ruth showed them to the parlor, saying dinner was finishing up. Zachary was helping to lead Owen into the parlor. The parents were close behind them watching the sweet moment between the young uncle and nephew. The sight of the pair nearly caused Thomas to burst in tears, but he managed to keep most of them in. “Are you alright, darling?,” Alastair whispered to him. “Yes, don’t worry,” he wiped the few stray tears, “Look at Zachary and Owen. Imagine our child playing alongside their uncle and cousin in just a few years.” Alastair kissed his temple, “They will be a close trio. I can just guarantee it.” Sona immediately hugged Alastair and Thomas together when she entered the room. “How are you both this evening?”
“We’re fine, Māman.” She smiled at the pair with love. Sona then went to talk with Sophie and Gideon. James and Cordelia came up to the hosting couple. “I am so glad you two are hosting. Owen has been having a tough time going to bed lately,” Cordelia commented. “Everything alright?,” worried Thomas. “Yes,” James answered, “We’ve shortened his naps, so he’s a little more tired at night. That seems to have worked. He slept well last night.”
Zachary ran up to Alastair, “Brother baba!” Alastair lifted his little brother into his arms and settled him on his hip. “Hello Zachary,” he smiled. Owen wasn’t far behind and Cordelia easily swiped him into her arms. The toddler giggled at being lifted by his mother. “What are you doing running around?,” she asked him. “Zachary first.” Alastair looked at Zachary, “Why were you running, Zachary?”
“I miss you,” he wrapped his arms around his older brother. “I missed you too, Zachary. But Owen is younger than you and he looks to you on how to behave. So, I ask you to please be more aware of how you act.”
“Sorry, brother.” Alastair melted at his small voice. “I know you are. Just wanted to give you a small reminder.” Alastair sent him down, “Dinner is going to be served soon, so go to Māman. Walk, please.” Zachary listened and walked up to his mother. Sona leads Zachary to the dining room, talking with the Lightwoods.
Owen thought about following him till he saw Thomas. He reached for him. Thomas happily took him from Cordelia into his arms. “Hello, Owen. You want me to carry you to the dining table?” Alastair was walking with James and Cordelia. Owen quietly looked at Thomas then at his concealed bump. Thomas had to think ahead. “Do you want to be part of mine and Uncle Alastair’s surprise?,” he whispered to Owen. His little eyes went big, “A surprise?”
“Yeah. We’re going to surprise everyone at dinner.”
“What’s the surprise?”
“Can you promise to allow Uncle Alastair and I to be ones to do it?”
“I promise, Uncle Thomas,” the toddler nodded. Thomas smiled, “Uncle Alastair and I are going to have a baby.”
“A baby?” He managed to keep his voice to a whisper. “Yeah,” he smoothed his shirt to show more of his bump. “The baby is in your tummy?”
“Yeah. They will be in my tummy till they decide to join our family.” Thomas started to head to the dining room, “Remember this is mine and Uncle Alastair’s surprise.” Owen nodded in understanding. Thomas placed Owen in the empty seat between Cordelia and James. Thomas then took his seat next to Alastair. “What was keeping you two?,” Alastair asked. “I have now roped Owen into our little surprise,” he whispered to his husband. Alastair eyed him. “It was either that or risking him just out right questioning me. He noticed my bump. Which you said wouldn’t be noticeable!” Alastair took Thomas’ hand and kissed his knuckles, “It isn’t and kids are sometimes the most observant creatures.” Thomas sighed at that answer, “I hope so.”
Ruth and Andrew, their butler, served the dinner, a simple pot roast, to all the occupants in the dining room. Conversions happened all around the table. Sona was chatting mainly with Sophie. Cordelia and James conversed with Eugenia, who at one point had Owen on her lap. Alastair kept an eye on Thomas throughout the dinner. Thomas had to multiple times reassure him that he was feeling alright, if not too hungry. It was a mix of his pregnancy and the nerves of announcing said pregnancy to their family. Gideon did get Alastair to engage in a couple of conversations. Zachary wanted to sit next to Thomas, so he was having a couple of easy discussions with him.
Dishes were cleared from the table. Alastair and Thomas shared a silent conversation. Alastair stood up and got everyone’s attention, “Thomas and I have a big announcement to make.” He took a deep breath, and took Thomas’ hand in comforting strength. Thomas nodded and smiled. That caused Alastair to smile, “Thomas is pregnant. We are going to have a baby.” Silent looks of shock and surprise were visible on everyone’s faces. Owen was the only one smiling, and bouncing in his chair. Eugenia broke the silence, addressing her brother, “You’re pregnant?” Thomas nodded then stood up. He turned to his side and smoothed the front of his shirt, “Ten weeks along.” The slight swell of his stomach was visible. Sophie and Sona each ran up and hugged their own son.
“I am so happy for you,” Sophie whispered to Thomas. She was crying which caused him to cry too. “How have you been feeling so far?”
“The nausea has mostly gone away. But, peppermint tea has become a staple lately.” “I remember when I was pregnant with Barbara,” there was a silent moment between them, “I was panicking at every new symptom I felt. All of them were of course normal for a pregnancy.” Thomas smiled, “Brother Zachariah assured us that the baby is healthy.” He rubbed his bump, now that he didn’t have to hide it.
“Oh,” Sona cried as she held tightly to Alastair, “You’re going to be a father.” She then separated and held his face in her hands, “You will be a great one.” He nodded at her encouragement. “I hope you have been tending to Thomas.”
“Yes. Sometimes to a smothering level, but I am keeping an eye on his health.” She smiled, “How are you feeling about the pregnancy?”
“I am excited. He’s been handling it so amazingly so far.” They looked over as Cordelia and Eugenia were talking animatedly at a smiling Thomas. “I will be available if you need me,” Sona informed him. “You, Layla, and Thomas’ mother. We are very fortunate to have three incredible women to help us, if we need.” She kissed his cheek, “I can’t wait to meet my next grandchild.”
Thomas and Alastair were sitting at their smaller table in the parlor to eat their breakfast. Thomas was now three months along, and the nausea was mostly gone. He was at least no longer throwing up. He was able to enjoy a meal without worrying about what may happen after. Last week, Brother Zachariah did another check-up and reassured them that the child was developing well. As long as he felt up to it, Thomas was able to continue going on patrol for the time being. He was just reminded to be smart and safe. Alastair and Thomas have been patrolling together and they have been fine.
Thomas finished his plate then stood up from the table. He had his hand on his bump as an instinct. He walked over to the lit fireplace to warm up some more. He settled into his armchair and rubbed his stomach. “Are they behaving this morning?,” Alastair jokes. “They are currently doing somersaults. I swear it.” Alastair stood up and came to Thomas’ side. He placed his hand over Thomas’ hand, “I do not believe they are big enough to move quite yet.” Thomas hummed. They sat there for sometime, just marveling at the reality they will have a kid in the upcoming year.
Alastair helped Thomas out of the carriage. “Thank you,” he smiled. Alastair gave Thomas his elbow and Thomas wrapped his arms around his bicep. They walked up the steps to the entrance of the Institute. “Did I tell you how handsome you look this evening?,” Alastair smirked. Thomas chuckled, “Only just about twenty times.”
“Well, I am the luckiest man right now.” Thomas blushed at the statement.
Alastair was wearing a nice, black three piece suit. Thomas is wearing a clean white dress shirt with black dress pants. They were dressed-up tonight for the Institute Christmas Party. They entered the Institute to the sight of a decent amount of London Shadowhunters already there. “Are you nervous, darling?,” Alastair asked Thomas. “No, we’re only explicitly telling my extended family. The rest of the Enclave can mind their business,” Thomas answered. Alastair kissed his hair, “I am so in love with you right now.”
“You need to stop saying stuff like that if you wish to stay here and enjoy the party.”
“I would like to enjoy you,” Alastair whispered. Thomas took a deep breath, “We will stay long enough to tell our news to all who need to know then we are going home. I am not above using this baby.” He placed a hand on the front of his stomach. Alastair chuckled.
Will and Tessa Herondale were not far from the entrance. “Thomas, Alastair,” Tessa hugged them close, “How are you two enjoying your first Christmas as a married couple?”
“It’s been wonderful so far,” Thomas answered. “We have been quite blessed this year,” Alastair smiled. Will looked at the pair with a questioning look. Thomas took a deep breath before telling them, “I’m pregnant.” Tessa was smiling and hugged Thomas. Will was smiling too and congratulating the couple. “We are keeping the pregnancy among the family,” Thomas informed them. “The rest of London doesn’t need to know our personal business.”
“Of course,” Tessa smiled.
Alastair found Cordelia and James in the parlor room, immediately starting a conversation. Thomas said a quick hello to Cordelia and James before informing Alastair that he was going to find his family. “Do you want me to join you?”
“No, you stay here and talk with your sister. I shouldn’t be gone too long.” Thomas kissed his head then whispered, “I meant it when I said we are going home once I tell the rest of my family the news.” Alastair shuttered at Thomas’ promise.
Thomas found Matthew and Sylvain in a corner of the ballroom. “What are you two scheming over here?,” he teased. “My plans to be the best uncle ever to Owen. I shall take inspiration from Uncle Will,” Matthew smirked. “Please don’t tell me this is some sort of competition with Alastair,” Thomas groaned. “I had forgotten Alastair is his uncle.” Thomas sighed, “How could you have forgotten he is Cordelia’s brother?”
“Cordelia is nothing like him.”
“Also that I, by being married to Alastair, am also Owen’s uncle.”
“I would never be in competition with you, Tom.” Thomas smirked, “So, you would have no strong feelings about Owen and I being incahoots a few weeks ago.” Matthew jerked his head to face Thomas, “What were you two scheming about?”
“It was during a family dinner, just our parents and siblings. Owen is the true, unintended, mastermind of this. I shared a secret with him to keep but only because he managed to figure it out. I didn’t want him revealing it before Alastair and I could.” Matthew smirked, “What secret could you and Alastair have?” Thomas smiled, “That I’m pregnant.” Matthew stood up, “You’re pregnant?” Thomas nodded. “You willingly allowed for him to-”
“Okay,” Thomas stopped him, “I need to remind you that Alastair is my husband and we are in a room with other people.” Matthew waved his hand in a nonchalant manner. “And we wish to keep my pregnancy a private matter.” Matthew sat down sheepishly. Sylvain rubbed his arm and addressed Thomas, “Congratulations. Your child will have the fortune of good genes.”
“I am right here.” Slyvain kissed Matthew’s cheek, “Exactly where I want to be. Right next to you.”
“I’m gonna go find Uncle Gabriel and Aunt Cecily. Merry Christmas to you both.”
“Merry Christmas, Tom,” Matthew smiled.
Thomas found his Uncle Gabriel and Aunt Cecily in the dining room. Well, Alexander found him first. “Tom,” he shouted and ran up to Thomas. Thomas positioned his body so his legs got most of the shock on Alexander’s hug. “Hey, buddy,” he smiled at the nine year old. “Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas, Alexander.” He continued on his way to his aunt and uncle. “Uncle Gabriel, Aunt Cecily, Merry Christmas.” Cecily smiled at him, “Merry Christmas, Thomas.” She pulled out a chair next to her, “Sit.” He became nervous but he took her suggestion, especially since his feet were starting to hurt. Alexander went to try to sit on his lap, “Sorry, Alexander. Not tonight.” He was worried, his bump was still small but he was being cautious. “Why not, Thomas?” His aunt had that smirk that said she knew something but she wanted you to say it. “Where’s Anna? Where is she, and Ariande?,” Thomas asked. He was stalling but he also needed to know where to find her next. “She and Ari decided to take a trip to Wales for the holiday. They’ll be back soon, after the new year.” Thomas sighed, “Have you spoken with my mother recently?”
“A few weeks ago, I believe it was after a dinner you and Alastair hosted at your home.”
“So you both already know,” Thomas sighed. “Know what?,” Gabriel questioned. He seemed genuinely confused. “I do. Your Uncle Gabriel, however….Your mother loves to spread joy any chance she gets.” Thomas picked Alexander up and placed him on his lap, so he is sitting close to the table. “Alexander, Uncle Gabriel, Alastair and I are expecting,” he took a breath, “I am pregnant.” Cecily was smiling while Gabriel stood up and came to hug Thomas, “That’s incredible. Congrats, Thomas.”
“Thanks, Uncle Gabriel.” Alexander looked at Thomas and put his hand on Thomas’ stomach, “You’re going to have a baby?” Thomas put his hand over his, “Yeah. Alastair and I are going to be parents.”
Lucie saw her brother and her parabatai talking with Alastair. She pulled Jesse to the small group. “Merry Christmas,” she smiled at them. “Merry Christmas, Lucie,” Cordelia said back. “Where’s Owen this evening?,” Jesse asked. “My mother offered, demanded really, that she watch him so James and I could have an evening for ourselves.”
“That was nice of her,” Jesse commented. “There were some selfish reasons. Owen and Zachary are the best playmates and I think she wants to wear my little brother out so he sleeps tonight. She is going to spoil that boy. I can’t imagine what gifts she got Owen. Māman really loves being a grandmother.” Cordelia gave a quick glance to Alastair. “I’m guessing she’s been encouraging you and Thomas to have a kid,” Lucie questioned Alastair. “No, she really hasn’t.” He was looking around to see if Thomas was coming back. James jumped in, “Thomas and Alastair have been married just a year. Their time will come.”
Thomas was coming back to the parlor, smiling at Alastair. “It’s fine, James.” Alastair held his hand out for Thomas to take. “Lucie, Jesse. This is where you two are.” He was smiling wide. “Are you ready to go home, darling?,” Alastair asked him. “Not yet,” Thomas smiled. Alastair nodded and smiled. “Lucie, Jesse, my mother hasn’t tried to talk us into having a child because…,” Alastiar started. “I’m already pregnant,” Thomas finished. Lucie was surprised, “Really?”
“Yeah,” Thomas rubbed his bump. Lucie hugged him, “That’s incredible. When are you due?”
“Jem says they’re expected in late June,” Alastair answered. “Oh, a summer baby. How amazing,” Lucie smiled.
When Alastair and Thomas got home, they went straight to their bedroom. Alastair threw his jacket onto the chair in the corner. He was unbuttoning his shirt when he caught the sight of his husband’s own shirt being open, showing off his bump. He rushed to finish his own undressing. Thomas had unbuttoned his pants when hands came behind him, pulling his pants down. “You know I am perfectly able to undress myself.” Alastair kissed his neck, “I know. I want to love you.” Thomas gave access to his neck, “I don’t mind this foreplay. The baby is taking a lot of my energy.” Alastair came in front and got Thomas’ pants off completely. He kissed the small bump, “So gorgeous.” Thomas brushed his fingers through Alastair’s hair. Alastair then grabbed the shirt sleeves and pulled. The shirt fell to the floor. He took Thomas’ face in his hands and kissed him.
Thomas laid on the bed as Alastair had his body hovered above him, keeping his weight off of Thomas. Their lips moved in unison as they enjoyed each other. “I am fine and so is the baby.” Thomas slid down, with his knees bent and the bottom of his feet facing the ceiling, “You feel amazing.” He took in his husband, “Absolutely incredible.” Thomas placed his hands on Alastsair’s chest. “I can say the same about you,” Alastair rubbed his bump, “You are the one carrying our child.” Thomas placed one of hands on Alastair’s hands. So, we can move at our own pace for the day.” Thomas smiled, “A relaxing day sounds nice.” Alastair rubbed circles on Thomas’ stomach. “I do want to exchange presents, but that can be later tonight.”
Ruth entered their bedroom with breakfast on a tray. They sat up in bed, keeping covers over them. “Good Morning, sirs.”
“Morning, Ruth. Merry Christmas,” Thomas smiled. “Merry Christmas. I hope your pregnancy is treating you well this morning, Mr. Carstairs.”
“I am feeling good this morning,” he responded, smiling at Ruth. Alastair smiled at his relaxed smile.
Alastair and Thomas spent most of the day in their bed. They took lunch in their bed as well. They also had intercourse in the afternoon after they took a post-lunch nap. Thomas was sitting on Alastair’s lap as they were making out. His silk robe was hanging off of one shoulder. Alastair took special care to show his husband how much he loved him. They deepened their kiss, Alastair wrapped his arms around Thomas’ waist while Thomas kept his hold on Alastair’s shoulders. Alastair then moved to Thomas’ neck. Thomas threw his head back with pleasure. No words were needed between the couple. Alastair moved one of his hands to support Thomas’ head as he moved to kiss his shoulder. Thomas and Alastair laid in their bed, facing each other. Thomas rubbed his hand on Alastiar’s chest, “You are still incredible,” he complimented. Alastair moved a stray hair from Thomas' face, “You are still gorgeous.” Thomas kissed the palm of his hand, “I hope you still find me gorgeous as my pregnancy progresses.”
“You don’t need to worry. You will be still gorgeous to me,” he pulled Thomas to his chest, “You are carrying our child. Getting to be by your side during this pregnancy is a luxury and I am happy to be there for you.”
The couple put on their fleece robes and some pants to go downstairs. Thomas wanted to do a standard gift exchange by the Christmas tree. Alastair and Thomas sat in their chairs by the lit fireplace. Thomas handed Alastair his gift with joy and excitement. It was a long rectangular box. He opened the box to reveal a green kaftan. Alastair picked up the Persian garment with careful hands, “Where did you get this?”
“I may have portaled to Tehran with your mother. I wanted to get you something special.” Alastair looked at him with love, “This is definitely the most special gift I have received.” Thomas was smiling widely. Alastair set the kaftan back in the gift box, so he could give Thomas his gift.
Alastair set the smaller box in Thomas’ lap. He became self-conscious of the size but he held strong in his choice of gift. Thomas opened the box to a copy of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. “Was three copies in the house not enough?,” Thomas joked. Alastair smiled, “It’s a first edition.” Thomas' eyes widened, he examined the copyright year, it was from 1859. “I do not believe you have one of those in your collection.” Thomas set the book down on the table to hug Alastair, “Thank you. I love it.” Alastair hugged him back. “Where did you find a first edition?”
“Apparently Tessa Herondale is seemingly an expert at finding first editions. I briefly mentioned it and within a few days, she handed me that. I did pay the cost.” Thomas kissed him, “I love it. I will treasure it.”
Walking hand in hand, Alastair and Thomas entered the Hell Ruelle. They were going to hangout with Anna and Ari for the evening. Anna managed to get a table in a private corner. She was looking dapper as always. She was wearing a blue suit with a white dress shirt with three of her top buttons unbuttoned. Ari was wearing a blue dress to match Anna, waving them to get their attention. “Hello,” Thomas greeted. Alastair helped Thomas remove his winter coat. He also pulled out a chair for him before removing his own coat and taking a seat. Anna had a glass of whiskey, already in hand, “Over one year later and they are still in the honeymoon period,” she smirked to Ari. Ari lightly pushed her, “It’s lovely. You do have your moments of gentlemanliness, by the way.”
“We also have only been married for seven months,” Anna took a sip of her drink. “Well I hope you can take some inspiration from Alastair.” Ari then turned to the young men, “How are you both doing? How was your holiday?” Thomas smiled at her true interest in them, “We’re fine. Our Christmas was more laid back this year. We decided to spend the day together,” he brushed a hair behind Alastair’s ear, “alone.” Alastair smilied, “It was lovely. As I am sure you two can attest to. How was Wales?”
“Uncle Will was nice enough to let us use his summer home for the week. Very secluded,” Anna winked at them. “Anna,” Ari stressed. She started blushing; Anna noticed it. She wrapped her arms around Ari and kissed her pink cheeks. Anna turned to Alastair and Thomas, “I’ll go get you both some drinks from the bar. What do you want?” She was standing up from the table. “I’ll take a whiskey also,” Alastair answered. “I’ll just want a glass of water.” Anna’s left eyebrow lifted up, “Not beer. Even just a few sips.”
“I really shouldn’t be having alcohol right now, Anna.” He was smiling, giddy, while saying it. Her eyes squinted, “Alright. I’ll be right back.”
Ari turned to Thomas, “Are you feeling well? Anna has told me of your past illnesses. I hope you don’t mind her telling me.” Thomas waved his hand, “I don’t mind that she told you. It’s not something I hide about myself.” Alastair placed his hand on Thomas’ hip. “I am fine. Nothing to worry about.” Thomas gave Ari a confident smile.
Anna came back with two glasses of whiskey, one was hers, and the glass of water for Thomas. Alastair took an initial sip of his whiskey. She sat down and got right to it, “What’s going on with you, Tom?” He shrugged, “I have no idea what you mean.” Her face then said, ‘Really? I’m your cousin.’ Thomas sighed before interlocking his hands with Alastair. “I am…pregnant,” he announced to Anna and Ari. Anna’s hand froze with her glass on her lips. Ari was giddy and jumped to wrap Thomas and Alastair in one big hug, “Congratulations.” They smiled at her joy over their news. “Thank you, Ari,” Alastiar said. She sat back down and without looking helped Anna lower the glass onto the table. “When did you find out?,” Anna asked. “We’ve known for just a little over a month,” Alastair answered. “How far along are you?,” Ari asked now. “I’m thirteen weeks,” Thomas put his hand on the bump, which was hidden under the table, “They’re due in June.”
“Who all knows?,” Anna asked them. “Both of our families,” Alastair answered, “As well as cousins and aunts & uncles.” Matthew told Charlotte and Henry the news on Christmas day since they wished to stay home from the Christmas Party the night before. “So my parents know?”
“Yes. In fact, apparently my mum told Aunt Cecily before I could.” Anna took a sip of her whiskey, “That sounds about right.” She was smiling and was happy for them in her own silent way.
For Valentine’s Day this year, Alastair wanted to spoil Thomas for the day. Thomas has been managing his pregnancy well so far. He is almost halfway through the pregnancy, so Alastair wanted to pamper him for the day. He had a special dinner planned out this evening for Thomas.
Thomas woke up with the morning light streaming into the room. He, slowly, switches sides he is laying on to reach for Alastair on his side of the bed. Thomas was met with an empty side of the bed. He sat up in bed, “I wonder where your baba went,” he said to his seventeen week bump. He rubbed his left hand along it. He couldn’t wait till he could feel them move. Jem says they’re already squirming around in there.
The bedroom door opened to Alastair walking in with a breakfast tray in hand. “Yay,” Alastair smiled, “You’re already awake.” He placed the tray, temporarily, on his side of the bed. “Let me fix your pillows.” He reached behind Thomas, who leaned forward slightly, for the pillows. He rotated them to make sure they were on his whole back. “Better?,” he eyed Thomas. “Yes. Thank you,” Thomas smiled. Alastair grabbed the tray and placed it over Thomas’ lap, “Breakfast in bed. Happy Valentine’s Day, love.”
“Happy Valentine’s Day.” Alastair bent down to kiss Thomas. “You didn’t have to do this for me,” Thomas argued. “I didn’t have to do this,” Alastair sat down on the bed next to him, “I wanted to.”
Thomas was buttoning his red dress shirt. Alastair had a romantic dinner, in their home, planned for Thomas tonight. He grabbed his black pants and pulled them up. The problem came when he went to button them. They wouldn’t button up, “Ugh!”
“What’s wrong, darling?,” Alastair was buttoning his shirt sleeves. “My bump is too big. My pants won’t fit!” He put his face in his hands. Alastair came and rubbed his hands along Thomas’ biceps, “Your bump isn’t too big. Also, I picked up a pair of new pants for you.” Alastair went to their closet where the pants were sitting on the floor. He handed the black pants to Thomas, encouraging him to try them. Thomas wordlessly took them. He removed the first pair then pulled up the new pair. He was able to button these. “They are made with an extra panel of fabric.” He showed Thomas where the panels of stretch fabric were on the sides. “They will stretch as the baby grows,” Alastair kneeled down and kissed Thomas’ bump. “You are too sweet to me.”
“No, I am not,” Alastair stood up and took his hand, “I am doing what any husband would do.” He kissed Thomas’ knuckle before leading him downstairs to their dining room.
The dining room was dark, only being illuminated by the candles on the table. The plates were already placed on the table for them. Thomas had a hand around Alastair’s bicep. “Oh, Alastair,” Thomas had his hand over his heart as he started to cry, “This is so romantic.” He wiped the tears falling. “Stupid hormones,” he muttered. Alastair kissed his forehead, “Nothing is too much for you.” He led Thomas to his seat. He pulled out the chair for him and pushed it in. Alastair then took his own seat, “A simple pot roast with roasted vegetables.” Thomas smiled, “Thank you.” Alastair smiled back, “You’re welcome.” He put his napkin on his lap, “I don’t know if you’ve noticed yet, but I intend on pampering you throughout this pregnancy.” He sipped his wine, “As well as after they are born.” Thomas was swooning, “I am so lucky.” He had heart-eyes at his husband.
Alastair slammed open their bedroom door. Thomas had his legs wrapped around his waist. They were deep in a kissing session. Alastair kept his hands on Thomas till he laid him down on their bed. They broke apart and looked at each other in hunger. Alastair was standing in between Thomas’ legs. Thomas’ legs were dangling off the edge of the bed. Alastair buttoned his own shirt and ripped it away from his body. He then went to unbutton Thomas’ shirt, revealing his newly formed breasts. Thomas was breathing deeply as his nipples reacted to the cold air, “Fuck.” Alastair paused as he took in the new mounds on Thomas’ chest. “When did you develop these?”
“My chest has ached since I entered my second trimester but they just started growing in the past few weeks.” Thomas smiled, “It seems I will be able to feed our child.” Alastair paused, hand hovering over them. “Just be gentle,” Thomas said, “They are quite sensitive.” He was gently massaging them, marveling at this new development of his partner’s pregnancy. Alastair went back to unbuttoning Thomas’ shirt. He kissed Thomas’ skin as more of it was free. When he got to the bottom, he unbuttoned Thomas’ pants. He threw the shirt open revealing all of Thomas’ torso.
Alastair decided to pay close attention to his unborn child tonight. He rubbed his hands over the bump before bending down to give kisses. “You are going to excite them,” Thomas moaned as he cradled the underside of the bump. Alastair smiled, “I want them to know how loved they are.” He brushed his thumbs next to Thomas’ hands, “Have you felt them move yet?”
“No. Jem says it is still too early to feel them. But soon I will.” Alastair worked on getting Thomas’ pants off, “I can’t wait till I can feel them on the outside.” Thomas hummed in response. The pants were cast into the pile alongside Alastair’s shirt. “Are you comfortable? Do you need a pillow on your back?”
“A pillow would be nice.” Alastair grabbed a pillow and put it under Thomas’ lower back. “Mhmm. That’s better,” Thomas had his eyes closed as he settled onto the pillow.
Alastair worked so they are both naked and vulnerable. He prepped Thomas for him using his fingers. Thomas sucked in a breath at the sudden sensation. “I am sorry,” Alastair chuckled. “I’m still sensitive.” Alastair moved his fingers around in slow, meaningful motions. Thomas moaned in pleasure, “I am ready for you.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes! Get inside me before I lose it.” Alastair smiled at his husband’s impatience. He grabbed Thomas’ legs, holding them up by the back of his knees. Alastair angled his penis to Thomas’ hole then slowly entered. Thomas let out a sigh in orgasmic relief. Alastair then bent down over Thomas, placing Thomas’ knees now on his shoulders. Alastair started thrusting his hips to further excite Thomas. Thomas kept a hold on his bump to help soften the jostling the child would be experiencing. His tiny mounds were bouncing, so he then wrapped his other arm around those to stop them.
Alastair saw as he was pleasuring his husband well. The peace on his face when Alastair ejaculated into him. He kept himself inside Thomas for a few minutes. Alastair kissed the bump as a way of comforting his child for the rough rocking. Thomas rubbed the bump as well, and took Alastair’s hand to join him in comforting them. “You are still so gorgeous to me,” Alastair whispered.
Thomas was sitting on a blanket in their backyard, enjoying the early spring afternoon sun. He was rubbing his twenty-two week bump. He was imagining his unborn child running around this yard. He and Alastair will be training them to be a Shadowhunter in this backyard. Thomas wondered what weapon they would choose as their own. Maybe a bolas like him, the whip like Anna. Or maybe a long range weapon like a bow.
“What are you doing out here?” Thomas turned to see Alastair coming out of the house to join him. Thomas smiled, “Just enjoying the sun and thinking.” Alastair sat down next to him on the blanket, “What are you thinking about?”
“Our child running around this yard, us training them. Just wondering who they will be as they grow up. What weapon they’ll use,” he smiled. Alastair laid Thomas down so his head was in Alastair’s lap. Alastair started playing with his hair, “No matter what, they are going to be an amazing kid.” Thomas took Alastair’s hand and put it on his bump. The baby started kicking his hand. “They’ve been very active today. I was hoping sitting in the sun might calm them down.”
“Doesn’t appear to be working. They are acting like they are battling demons in there.”
“Yeah, I’ve been finding it hard to relax now that I can feel them move around in there.” Alastair kissed his forehead, “Wish I could help.”
“You already do. They seemed to be calmed by you.” Thomas felt as the baby seemed to fall asleep with Alastair’s soothing rubs. Thomas felt as his eyes started drooping. “Let’s head inside before you fall asleep out here. I promise to continue soothing them in our bed.”
Alastair helped Thomas stand up from the ground. They headed back inside and upstairs to their bed. Thomas laid on his right side and placed a pillow under his bump. Alastair also laid on his side and rubbed Thomas’ bump to help the baby stay asleep, so his husband could take a much needed nap.
Thomas and Alastair were mingling amongst friends and family in the Institute’s ballroom. Cordelia and Eugenia insisted on throwing the expecting parents a baby shower so they can be spoiled with gifts for them and the baby. They relented to their sisters and agreed to the party. They were going to use it to spend time with their loved ones before the baby is here. A lunch was served and eaten, so now they were conversing among themselves. Thomas was talking with Matthew when Eugenia came up to him, as Cordelia did with Alastair as he was talking with Charlotte Fairchild, “Cordelia says it is time for presents. I think it is a good idea, so you can sit.”
“Genie, I am fine and I can manage my own energy.” He smiled at her worry for him. “Either way, you and Alastair are going to open gifts now.”
The chairs were placed towards the front of the room with all eyes on them. Cordelia was handing the gifts to Alastair for them to open. Thomas silently was excited to see what everyone got for their child. He rubbed his bump as the baby, sensing the excitement of the room, was wiggling in his womb. “Alright?,” Alastair asked. Thomas nodded, “They’re just excited.” Alastair went to feel as their limbs were moving around in his husband.
James and Codelia, and Owen, gave them some newborn clothes. Cordelia had also made some diapers for them.
Eugenia had embroidered a little piece with rainbows and suns to hang in the baby’s room.
Sophie and Gideon gave them a knitted blanket that Sophie worked her heart into. She used a mix of red and gold yarn for the piece.
Matthew found a blanket for swaddling in Paris when he and Slyvian went a month ago.
Will had made them a wooden rocking bassinet. They were overjoyed with his hard work on the gift for a child he has no blood relation to. He simply said he made Owen’s bassinet so he is going to continue the trend of making them for the next generation. Tessa made sure the couple had enough diapers.
Sona, already spoiling this grandchild, gifted plenty of toys. Which the baby won’t be able to enjoy till they’re a few months old.
Charlotte gifted them a banner piece to celebrate the pregnancy and future arrival, with all the details to be stitched on later, of the baby. Henry has made an electric mobile to hang over the crib. Matthew reassured them he tested it out before allowing it to leave Henry’s lab.
“Thank you all for the gifts,” Thomas smiled. “Yes, you all are very generous to us,” Alastair continued, “We are happy to see that our child is loved so much already.” He placed a hand on Thomas’ stomach with a smile.
Before they left, Tessa handed them a blank envelope saying it was hand delivered to her from the Silent City. Inside was a card from Jem saying how excited he was for the two of them. It was simple and in the tone of a Silent Brother. But, there was still some emotion as Jem is not a full Silent Brother.
James, Matthew, and Slyvian came to the house a week after the shower to help Alastair set up the nursery. Thomas was happy to see his friends work alongside his husband. This baby seems to have worked a miracle. Later that day, after dinner, Thomas was led upstairs to the nursery. Alastair was covering his eyes to keep it a surprise. “Ready?,” he whispered. “Yes. Let me see your hard work.” Alastair slowly uncovered his eyes. The walls were painted in a pale yellow color, as they do not know what they are having. The crib and changing table were put together. “To the dresser,” James led him. Thomas opened a drawer to see clothes already in there and organized. “This is amazing, guys.”
“There’s one final feature,” Matthew said. Alastair led Thomas to a corner next to the crib. There was a rocking chair with the blanket made by Sophie hanging over the top. Thomas sat down and rocked, “This is probably the best part.” The other guys chuckled. “Seriously though, thank you guys for coming over to help Alastair with this.”
“Of course, man. Kid on the way for one of my dearest friends, I am always willing to help,” Matthew smiled, “And to spoil.”
Thomas was standing naked up against their bedroom wall. His legs spread wide as Alastair, standing in front of him, was entering him. Alastair lifted one of Thomas’ legs to widen his hips before rocking his own hips. He was being gentle since Thomas was almost full-term and he could go into labor at any moment. Thomas took Alastair’s face into his hands and started kissing him, hard and with hunger. Alastair had one hand on the back of Thomas’ head and the other rubbing his bump. “I can’t believe you still want to have sex with me,” Thomas breathed. “You are and will forever be my beautiful husband.”
“You do know we won’t be having sex after the baby is born,” he felt his opening tighten, “At least not for a while.”
“I know,” Alastair kissed his neck, “That’s why I am showing you how much I love you now.” He then grabbed and squeezed one of Thomas’ developed breasts.
Thomas let out a deep breath, “Oh my god.” He cupped the underneath of his bump. He was taking a few rounds of deep breaths. “Are you alright?,” Alastair asked. He carefully exited Thomas, he looked at him in worry, “Is it the baby?” He had both hands on the sides of his bump. Thomas nodded before placing his hands over Alastair’s hands, “I can finally breathe again.” He was smiling at Alastair, “They have dropped. Their birth is officially on the horizon.” Alastair smiled back, “We need to tell our families so they can be ready.” Thomas nodded as Alastair grabbed clothes and put them on. “I’ll be right back,” he kissed Thomas as he ran out of their bedroom. Thomas waddled to his bed to sit and get pressure off his hips, “We are excited to meet you and I’m glad you are too.”
Alastair went to his study downstairs to send fire messages to their mothers and sisters. As well as one to Tessa Herondale, who will be acting as their midwife for the birth. Another to Brother Zachariah so he can be prepared to perform the ritual so their child will be protected. Alastair also asked for him to come by soon to a final examination of Thomas and the baby.
‘ I am sending you a fire message to inform you that the child has lowered in Thomas’ womb. Their arrival is going to be happening soon. So, I wanted to inform and prepare everyone. Thomas and baby are doing alright so far. I know we are excited for them to get here.’
[To Brother Zachariah]: ‘ He will say I am worrying too much. But I ask if you could make a trip to our home, to do a final check over of Thomas and our child. I want to make sure everything is well for the imminent birth.’
Brother Zachariah came to the house two days after Alastair sent the fire messages. He was sitting on the bed next to Thomas, who was lounging on the bed. The Silent Brother had his hands on the bump, looking over the child. “They are in the proper head down position for the birth. Heart rate is stable and there doesn’t seem to be any signs of distress. How are you feeling, Thomas?”
“I am doing alright for now. I’ve had some of the false labor pains, which my mother assured me is normal,” Thomas answered. “They are normal as your body prepares for the birth. I have been told you will know when labor has begun.” He stood up to prepare to take his leave, “I will recommend you go on bed rest till the birth.” Thomas nodded, “I think I will.” Brother Zachariah then addressed Alastair, “Thomas and the baby are both preparing for the birth. If you have any concerns, you may send me a fire message.” Alastair nodded, “Thank you for coming, cousin.”
“Of course. I can not wait to meet your child.” Alastair saw him out of the house to the Silent City carriage.
Alastair came back up to their bedroom. Thomas had his hands resting on his bump, “It is sweet you care about me, but there is going too far. However , I am glad to know the baby is fine and they are preparing for the delivery.” Alastair came to sit down next to him and took his hand in his own, “I am glad to know you both are healthy and ready for the birth.” He laid in Thomas' lap, on his outstretched legs, and faced the bump. He rubbed small circles near where their head probably is, “Your dad and I are excited to meet you.”
Thomas was laying in bed as Alastair massaged his feet and ankles. He was only one week away from being full-term. “Hmm,” he moaned, “That feels so good.”
“I’m glad I could make you feel better,” Alastair smiled. Thomas was rubbing his stomach when he felt it contract, both under his hand and feeling the muscles contracting. “Mhmmm,” he moaned in response to it, “I think I just had a contraction.” Alastair’s hands still in their motions. Thomas smiled at his wide eyes and worried expression, “I believe I’m officially in labor. Our baby is coming.” Alastair came up and put his hand on Thomas’ stomach, “Are you sure?”
“It’s only been the one so far but I am pretty confident in my evaluation.” Alastair was smiling so wide, “We’re going to have our baby?”
“Well, I will be having the baby.” Alastair chuckled and kissed Thomas, “Shall I send for our families?”
“Not yet, it’s still early labor. I can handle these contractions myself for now.” Thomas asked Alastair to return to massaging his sore feet.
Alastair assisted Thomas down the stairs to their library, where it was cooler and there were comfortable places for him to sit as his labor progressed. He was wearing his satin robe, as another method of keeping cool. Alastair kept close to Thomas for when/if he needed him. Thomas sat on the couch to read as a way of distracting himself. Alastair sat in the chair next to the couch, trying to read his own book. “Alastair, I can feel you staring at me,” his eyes not leaving the page, “I will let you know if I need you.”
The pair read in their library for a couple of hours before heading to their parlor room table for a light lunch. “How are you feeling, darling?,” Alastair asked Thomas. “I’m alright so far. Contractions are still manageable at the moment.” Alastair took his hand and kissed his knuckles, “I love you.” Thomas smiled, “I love you too.”
They remained in the parlor to relax together. Ruth opened the windows to allow for a cooling breeze into the room. Alastair had Thomas lay his head on his lap, so that he could run his fingers through his hair as a way to distract Thomas from the labor pains. “Have you thought about what they might look like?,” Thomas questioned. “A little, nothing specific. Just knowing they are a mix of us, they are going to be beautiful.”
“I hope they have your skin tone, not my pale tone. Like Owen has Cordelia’s skin tone.” Alastair ran his hand up and down the bump, “It is a possibility. We’ll just have to wait and see.” Thomas groaned at a contraction, “Won’t be long now.” Alastair gave Thomas his hand to squeeze for other contractions, “I’m right here for you.” Thomas took his hand, lovingly, “I know and I am glad to have you here.”
Thomas was pacing through the parlor. He was coming upon his sixth hour of labor. His hands were pressing into his back to help support his back as he paced and labored. Alastair sat on the couch, keeping an eye on Thomas. Thomas then stopped and leaned over his knees, “Hmmm. I may have to admit defeat.” Alastair came up to him and wrapped an arm around his waist, “What do you need from me?” Thomas placed a hand on Alastair’s shoulder, “Help me back to our bed.” Alastair helped Thomas climb up the stairs, and settled him onto the edge of their bed. Thomas let out an exhale. Alastair rubbed his knee in comfort, “What are you thinking?”
“I am at my end point of solidarity. I need other people with me now.”
“What do you need from me?,” Alastair asked once more. “I need you to send the fire messages to get our mothers and sisters here.” Alastair kissed his forehead, “You are amazing in my eyes. Always.” He ran off to send the necessary fire messages. Thomas let it sink in that he was about to give birth to his and Alastair’s child.
Sona and Zachary were the first to arrive at the house. Ruth, who was asked to stay in the foyer, answered the knock of the door. She then led the two of them to the main bedroom. Thomas was leaning over his bed as he felt a contraction, and Alastair was massaging his lower back. “How are you doing?,” she asked. Thomas was wearing a summer shirt to give himself some modesty. “I am hanging in there. The contractions are getting closer together.” Sona handed Zachary off to his older brother. She took Alastair’s place behind Thomas, “Alastair, why don’t you take Zachary downstairs? He needs an afternoon snack. Also to wait for the others to arrive, give Ruth a moment's break. We will probably need her as Thomas progresses.” Alastair nodded then told Thomas, “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
“I can’t wait to hold our child. I am already proud of you.” He kissed Thomas’ temple before taking Zachary down to the kitchen. He set his little brother down on a stool while he went to find some watermelon cubes, Margaret, their cook cut up the other day when Thomas was craving it. Alastair put the cubes into a small bowl and gave it to Zachary with a fork. “Is Thomas going to be alright? He looked like he was in pain.”
“Yeah, Zachary. Thomas is going to be fine. Our baby is coming today and it’s going to be an unpleasant experience for him.”
“Is there something I can do to make him feel better?” Alastair shook his head, “Sorry, baba. We are going to have to stay down here so Māman and Cordelia can help him. Along with Thomas’ mother and sister, as well as James’ mother. Basically, Thomas will have plenty of people at his side.” Zachary went back to eating his watermelon in silent contemplation.
James and Cordelia came to the house next, Owen was immediately handed to his uncle. Tessa and Will were walking in right behind them. “My parents were visiting when we got your fire messages,” James explained. “How is Thomas doing so far?,” Cordelia asked. “He’s doing well so far. Māman is upstairs with him now.” Cordelia gave her husband and son a quick kiss before heading upstairs. “We will take good care of him, Alastair,” Tessa said as he placed a calming hand on his shoulder. She was following her daughter-in-law to the bedroom. Thomas’ groans could be heard when the door was opened as the two women entered the room. Alastair tensed, almost like he was going to run up to his husband. But the weight of his nephew in his arms stopped him. James put an understanding hand on his shoulder, “I know. It’s hard being down here.”
“I don’t know how you did it.” Will came up, “Do you trust your mother, Alastair?”
“Yes.”
“Do you trust your sister?”
“Of course.” He eyed Alastair for this next one, “Do you trust my wife?”
“She was there for Cordelia when she had Owen and she had two children of her own. So, yes. I trust Tessa.”
“Where is this worrying coming from?” Alastair took a deep breath, “I have been by his side for the last ten months. Now, at the end, I am down here. Not right next to him as he has our child.” James nodded, “It is hard but it is what is to be done.”
Sophie and Eugenia entered the house with no word to the occupants downstairs as they raced up to Thomas and Alastair’s bedroom. Gideon waltzed in with a smile, “I’m about to be a grandfather.” He joined Will in one of the fireplace chairs. While James and Alastair were sitting on the floor entertaining Zachary and Owen.
Sophie and Eugenia walked into the room, taking in the situation. Thomas was sitting up in bed, rubbing his stomach in a soothing motion. Tessa was standing next to the fireplace at the ready. Sona was organizing Tessa’s tools for the birth. And Cordelia was sitting next to Thomas on the bed running her hand on Thomas’ back to help keep him calm. Sophie came up to his other side. “Hey, baby,” she whispered. “Mama,” he took her hand in his as he wept. Sophie kissed the crown of his head, “How are you feeling so far?” Thomas groaned, “I’m in pain, but excited to meet them.”
“I can’t wait to see you hold that little one in your arms.” Eugenia took Cordelia’s spot next to Thomas, “Hi, little brother.” Thomas smiled, “Hi, Eugenia.” He addressed the room, “I am glad you all are here with me.”
Brother Zachariah enters the bedroom while Thomas is going through a rough contraction. “Ugh,” Thomas groaned. “Hello, Jem,” Tessa smiled. “Hello Tessa,” he said back, “How is Thomas fairing so far? Anything you need from me?”
“He’s doing alright so far. I only need you to keep an eye on the baby to make sure they’re doing alright during his labor and the delivery.”
“I can do that.” Brother Zachariah moved himself to the corner so he would stay out of the way, if necessary.
Thomas was leaning over his bed once again with his mother and sister at his side. Sophie gave him her hand to squeeze and Eugenia tried to comfort him by massaging his lower back. “Hmmm,” he hummed as he swayed his hips. “How are the contractions right now?,” Sophie asked. “I am definitely progressing. They are getting worse,” Thomas answered. “Maybe we should check on your dilation,” she suggested. Thomas nodded, “That might be a good idea.” Sophie summoned Tessa over to Thomas’ side. Tessa came and instructed Thomas to sit on the edge of the bed. She was gentle in her examination, “You are progressing well. You’ve made it to 5 cm, just 5 more to go. Your water still hasn’t broken. Once that goes, labor will grow with it.” She put a supportive hand on his knee, “You are doing so well.” Thomas nodded at her compliment.
He saw Brother Zachariah in the corner, standing at the watch. “Brother Zachariah,” trying to get the Silent Brother’s attention. “Yes, Thomas?”
“Alastair and I, mostly Alastair, have wanted to keep the sex of our baby a surprise till they were born. I would like to know beforehand.” Thomas could almost see a smile on his face, “It is a girl.” Thomas exhaled, “A girl.” He started tearing up in joy. There was a quiet joy of excitement spread throughout the room.
Sona was supporting Thomas as he held onto a bed post through a contraction. “Huhnnn.” His eyes were scrunched up and he was leaning forward. “Breathe, Thomas,” she soothed, “I forgot about it during my labors too.” Thomas let out a deep exhale as he felt water run down his legs and pool on the floor under him. He looked down, “I think my water broke.” Sona looked down for herself and smiled, “It seems it has. Your daughter will be here soon.” Thomas smiled and whispered to himself, “My daughter.” Sona helped him back into the bed before updating the other occupants in the room. Thomas did one last rub of his bump and whispered, “I can’t wait to hold you.”
Thomas was in labor for three more hours after his water broke. Finally Tessa informed him, he was fully dilated and it was time to push. A blanket was placed over his legs for more privacy on his behalf. Sophie and Sona each had one of his hands in theirs. While Eugenia was sitting behind Thomas to help hold him up and Cordelia was standing next to Tessa to assist her mother-in-law as needed. “Alright, Thomas,” Tessa announced, “On your next contraction, push for ten seconds. I will count you down.” He nodded and waited for the contraction. Once it came, he gripped the two older women's hands and pushed. “10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2…1. Good, Thomas. Take a breather.” Tessa rubbed his knees as he fell back against Eugenia. His older sister wiped the sweat from his forehead. She was quiet and meticulous as she cooled him. “You are doing so well, little brother,” she whispered. He just smiled at her, “Thanks, Genie.”
Tessa was keeping her eye on Thomas’ opening, making sure all is well on the little girl’s journey. “I’m starting to see some hair. She is close to crowning,” she informed Thomas. As Thomas pushed, Tessa had her hand placed on her head. It moved slowly but surely. “Ah!,” Thomas yelled. “Her head is out!,” Tessa informed him. Thomas leaned into Sophie’s shoulder, “Oh my god.”
“She’s almost here, baby. Just a few more pushes,” she brushed her fingers through his hair. Thomas shook his head, “I can’t do it anymore. I’m so tired.” He was crying as Eugenia wiped his forehead once more. “Thomas, you need to push,” Tessa sternly said. “I can’t, Aunt Tessa.” Tessa looked to Jem, asking how the baby is doing. He reassured her there was no sign of distress.
Sona got in front of Thomas’ face, “You’re not quitting now.” She helped him sit up more, “Not when your daughter is so close.” She placed the hand she was holding under the blanket. She guided Thomas’ hand to his daughter’s head. “You feel that?” Thomas nodded with tears in his eyes. He felt her soft hair. “She’s right there. She needs you to finish this. Don’t deny my son the chance to have his daughter.” Feeling her head, that she is right there, it finally hits Thomas that he’s having a child. Keeping his hand on her head, Thomas pushed again. “You’ve got the shoulders out. One big push to get the torso.” Thomas removed his hand and took Sona’s again. He pushed, felt her body leaving his. “One more big push and you will have your daughter,” Tessa told him. Confident and ready he gave all of himself into this push, “Ahhh!”
Tessa was able to catch the babe as she left her dad, “She’s here!” She held her up so Thomas, leaning against Eugenia, could see her. She was wiggling her limbs in frustration as she wailed. Her skin tone was lighter than Alastair’s, a similar tone to Owen. “She’s so beautiful,” Thomas cried. “You did it,” Sophie kissed his head as she cried too. Sona was crying too. The newborn was crying at her entrance into the world.
Cordelia worked on cleaning her niece, “Hello, little one. Welcome.” Tessa cut the umbilical cord to allow for the baby to be swaddled. Cordelia wrapped her up, “You ready to hold your daughter?” She came to Thomas’ side. “Yes,” he held his arms out for her. Cordelia helped to settle her into Thomas’ arms. She made sure he had a good hold on her. “Hi,” Thomas whispered to her, “I’m your daddy. I am so glad you’re here.” Her eyes started fluttering as she relaxed at hearing her daddy’s voice.
Tessa helped Thomas deliver the afterbirth and cleaned him up, “Minimal bleeding. I would recommend at least a week of bed rest.” Thomas nodded. “I hate to take her from you, but we need to get her measurements. She also needs the protection ritual.”
“Of course,” he gave his daughter to Tessa. “Am I good to bring Alastair up here?,” Cordelia asked him. “Please. He needs to meet her.” Cordelia kissed his forehead. She left the room and went downstairs to get her brother. Sophie and Sona stayed to keep an eye on Thomas. Eugenia just couldn’t take her eyes off her niece.
Cordelia managed to slip away, after Thomas fully delivered his daughter, and opened the bedroom door just a crack. The newborn’s cries traveled down to the parlor room. Alastair was dozing off when he heard the cries. He shot up from his seat on the couch. He was stuck in place. Does he go in yet? Does he wait for Cordelia, or someone else, to come fetch him? James, who seemed to be awake, came to his side and placed a hand on his shoulder, “You’re a father,” he was smiling as he teared up. Alastair could just laugh to keep from breaking down, “I am a father.” His child is finally here. “Ruth,” he called for his maid. She came from the kitchen, “Yes, Mr. Lightwood?”
“You hear that?” Ruth heard the quiet cries from upstairs. “The baby is here,” she was smiling. “Yes. We are going to need food ready to feed everyone.”
“I will go help Margret with the breakfast.” She went back into the kitchen.
Will woke up with all the commotion. He saw the smiles of joy on James and Alastair’s faces. He got up from the chair he was resting in to go to Gideon. “Wake up, Gideon,” he tapped his shoulder, “You’re a grandfather.” That startled him awake, “The baby is here? What is it?”
“We don’t know yet,” Alastair answered. Alastair went down to kneel next to Zachary, who along with Owen, was sleeping on a makeshift bed. “Zachary, wake up. Thomas had the baby.” The young kid groaned in response then threw his arms around Alastair’s neck, “Baby is here?”
“Well, they and Thomas are still upstairs. But, yeah they are officially part of the family.”
He was waking up, “I want to see the baby.”
“Sorry, not yet kid. I haven’t even seen them yet and I’m their baba.” James woke up Owen and held him.
Cordelia came into the parlor. “Mama,” Owen reached for her. “Hi, baby.” She took her son from her husband. “So…,”Alastair prompted his sister. Cordelia smiled, “Thomas is doing fine, he and the baby are both healthy. You have a daughter.”
“A daughter? We have a daughter.” Alastair was crying once again. “Why are you crying?,” Zachary asked as he wiped Alastair’s tears. “I’m just so happy.” James took Zachary from Alastair and Cordelia gave Owen to his grandfather. “Let’s go meet your daughter.”
Alastair followed his sister up the stairs to his bedroom. Thomas was sitting up in bed, with his shirt still open and the blanket covering him. His and Alastair’s mothers were fretting over him. Eugenia was standing next to Tessa and Brother Zachariah in the corner. Sona and Sophie gave him smiles as he came into the bedroom. Alastair went up to his husband, “Hi, baby,” he kissed Thomas. “We have a daughter and she’s the most beautiful thing.”
“She is quite precious,” Tessa said as she came over with their daughter. Sophie, Sona, Cordelia, and Eugenia all left the room to give Thomas and Alastair a quiet moment alone with their daughter. Tessa placed the bundle into Thomas’ arms. Alastair sat next to Thomas and just looked at his daughter. “Hi, darling,” he whispered as he gently petted her head. “She’s a wonderful five pounds and ten ounces,” Tessa tells them. “Thomas and she are doing well. She’s been fully protected. We will leave you to your daughter. Congratulations.” Brother Zachariah left the room. “We’ll all be downstairs if you need us.”
“Thank you, Tessa. Breakfast should be ready soon,” Alastair smiled. Tessa nodded before taking her leave.
“How are you feeling?,” Alastair asked Thomas. “I’m alright. Tired but I can’t sleep.” Alastair looked at her as she was sleeping, holding Thomas’ finger with her whole hand. “She is ours,” he smiled. “She is. She also needs a name.” Alastair reached for her and held his daughter in his arms. He looked at her, “Arusha. It roughly means ‘Rising sun’ in Hindi.” He walked towards the bedroom window, “The sun does seem to be rising now.” Thomas smiled, “It can also mean ‘red’. Maybe she’ll inherit your red hair.” Alastair looked at Thomas with inquisitiveness. “You forget I’m a scholar of languages.”
“You want her to have my hair?” Thomas chuckled, “Of course. Why wouldn’t I?”
“It’s just….” Thomas, without second thoughts, got up to join his little family at the window. He looked down at his daughter, lightly brushing her thin head of hair, “I know you’ve had problems with your hair color when we met but I have always loved your natural hair. The blond just wasn’t you.” Alastair smiled, “Please get back in bed before I have a panic attack.” Thomas nodded and got back into bed. Arusha started to fuss in Alastair’s arms. “Give her to me,” Thomas held his hands out so Alastair could hand her off. He lined her up with his left nipple and she latched on easily. She was content in her eating. “Amazing,” Alastair smiled. Thomas looked up and smiled at him before going back to watch his daughter.
James knocked on the door frame, “Hey, we have two people who would like to meet their niece and cousin. Are we good to come in? We also brought you both breakfast.”
“It’s fine. Come on in,” Thomas invited them in. James led the five and three year old into the bedroom. Cordelia followed with two plates of food and handed them to Alastair to take the baby from Thomas, so he could eat. Alastair handed Thomas a plate. She sat on the edge of the bed, so the little ones could see her. “She really is gorgeous, guys,” James said. “Does she have a name yet?,” Cordelia asked. “Arusha Esther,” Thomas answered. “Such a beautiful name,” she gushed. “Say hello to Arusha boys,” she lowered the bundle down just a little so Zachary and Owen could see. “She’s so little,” Owen commented. “That’s because she was just born,” James explained, “She’ll grow in time.”
“Then we can play with her,” Zachary announced. “Yes, it will be different at first till she can run around,” James continued. “You all will most likely be training together. She will definitely be a great Shadowhunter,” Cordelia smiled.
Gideon and Sophie came up to the bedroom a little before noon. Arusha was sleeping in her bassinet and Thomas was napping. Alastair was sitting on the floor, looking at her in awe. That little sleeping baby is his daughter. He helped to create her and Thomas brought her into this world. “Hi,” Sophie whispered when she saw her son sleeping. Alastair stood up to hug her and Gideon, “Hi, come in. She’s sleeping at the moment.” The new grandparents went up to the bassinet. “She’s absolutely beautiful, Alastair,” Gideon gushed. “She is,” Alastair smiled. “James and Cordelia told us her name. Hope you don’t mind,” Sophie said. “It’s fine. We’re proud of her name.” Sophie and Gideon just marveled at their granddaughter.
Thomas woke up from his, much deserved, nap to the sight of his husband pacing around the bedroom. He was snuggling their daughter. “Hi,” Thomas whispered. Alastair turned to face him, “Hey, darling.” Thomas moved his body so he was sitting up in bed. Alastair sat next to Thomas and handed Arusha to him. “She’s absolutely perfect,” Thomas smiled. “She really is,” Alastair ran a finger along her cheek, “But I’m probably biased.” Thomas turned to look at him, “I love you.” Alastair smiled, “I love you too.” They shared a soft kiss before looking at their daughter as she slept in Thomas’ arms. Arusha slept for only a few more minutes then she needed to eat.
