Work Text:
For her, for Lily, she’d hoped, maybe, she’d hoped that maybe Mary would stay. She knew her best friend wasn’t the type, knew that Mary didn’t want to fight, that she didn’t care about the wixen world and would rather go home and put her family first. Family first, lovers last. Those were Mary’s priorities. And it made sense, it really did.
Mary’s family was amazing. Even if they didn’t have what wixen society deemed as magic, to Mary, they were the most magical beings on Earth. Lily loved them for that. From the moment she’d met Mary, the thing which made her grin the most was to talk about her family back home. Her parents’ cooking, her chatty little sister, her sweet baby brother, her nine other siblings, all of them were her best friends with personalities that differed yet matched. They came first. They’d known Mary since she was born, and Lily had known Mary since she was eleven.
She would never get all of Mary.
That was fine. Siblings came first.
But not for Lily. For Lily? To put Petunia first? She would have. When they were younger. Petunia used to have all of her. But they gave it up. They didn’t talk anymore. Neither of them were magical, not the way Mary and her siblings were. They couldn’t keep their bond, it broke under the pressure of distance and jealousy. Lily wanted to fix it, but Petunia didn’t. Lily wanted them to be like Mary and her siblings, but they would never be.
She wasn’t sure if she wanted them to be better just because she was jealous of Mary. To prove a point, I don’t need you either, I have a great family too.
Because she did need Mary. The way Mary was her family, that bond forged through marriage, chosen family, the love of her life and her media naranja, but she wasn’t Mary’s.
For Mary, it was lovers last. Too many people seemed to obsess over romance, make that the priority over their other relationships, and she had vowed to never fall into that trap. Lily thought she might have. Fallen. Definitely.
So Mary would leave her, and look after her family.
Lily wasn’t included in that. So why did she include Mary in hers?
