Katniss peered over at the sleeping woman laying next to her. It was early in the morning, almost six am. Katniss had been awakened due to her nightmares, she dreamed of Rue. Of holding her as the little girls blood covered her hands, she had dreamed the Rue turned into Prim.
The feeling of them being unexpectedly snatched from her, was one she would never forget. But now that she had Rachel, everything seemed to be better.
She looked fondly at Rachel, she didn’t know what her life would be like without her. Katniss wondered if she would forever feel that sense of loss before she had met Rachel. She made everything better. Katniss’s scars world never heal, but she with Rachel they had begun to form a scab. A temporary seal over the wound, preventing from all the damage and depression breaking out.
Rachel stirred and turned over and gave Katniss a sleepy smile. “What are you doing up so early?” Rachel asked.
“Oh, nothing much” Katniss replied as she played with Rachel’s soft red curls.
“Go back to sleep, it’s too early” Rachel said her nose crinkling slightly as she returned to her peaceful slumber.
Katniss kissed the red heads forehead. Maybe everything would be better now. Maybe soon that scab would turn into a scar and soon be gone.
Maybe there was still hope.
