Work Text:

Jimmy had always believed in the unpredictability of life. The way the universe sometimes conspired to throw two strangers together, forging paths that would otherwise remain forever separate.

It was a chilly autumn evening when he found himself wandering through the quiet streets of Maplewood, a small town nestled between rolling hills and dense forests.

With his hands shoved deep into his coat pockets and his mind preoccupied, Jimmy sought nothing in particular—just the solace of solitude.

As he turned a corner, he nearly bumped into a solitary figure sitting on a park bench, hunched over with his head bowed low. The man’s shoulders trembled slightly, and his hands clenched a crumpled piece of paper. Something about his posture struck Jimmy—an air of despair so palpable it was almost tangible.

“Hey,” Jimmy said softly, approaching cautiously. “Are you alright?”

The man looked up, revealing eyes shadowed with pain. His face was tanned but run red, very overgrown brown roots under bleached hair, barely pulled back in a red headband. For a moment, they merely stared at each other, two strangers in moment of vulnerability.

“I’m Bdubs,” the man finally muttered, voice hoarse. “Bdubs. And no, I’m not really ‘alright.’”

Jimmy nodded, taking a seat beside him. “Mind if I join you?”

Bdubs hesitated, then gestured for him to sit. “Sure. I guess I could use the company.”

For a while, they sat in silence, watching the amber leaves swirl around them in the chilly breeze.

Jimmy sensed that Bdubs had a story to tell—something heavy weighing on his soul.

After a moment, Bdubs took a deep breath.

“It’s my ex,” he began quietly. “His name was Etho.”

Jimmy’s brow furrowed. “Etho?”

“Yeah,” Bdubs replied, his voice tinged with bitterness. “Etho was... everything to me. We were together for years. But then he left. Just like that. Without warning. And now, I’m here, trying to understand why. Trying to get revenge, I guess.”

Jimmy looked at him with concern. “Revenge? That’s a heavy burden to carry.”

Bdubs scoffed. “You think I don’t know that? But it hurts so much. Etho, he broke me, left me shattered. And I can’t let him get away with it. Not without some kind of payback.”

Jimmy could see the pain behind Bdubs’ words—the raw ache of heartbreak intertwined with a desire for justice. He knew well how love could turn into obsession when broken.

“Tell me about Etho,” Jimmy said softly. “What made him so special?”

Bdubs paused, then a faint smile flickered across his lips, tinged with sadness. “He was charismatic. Funny. Smart. The kind of guy everyone loved. I thought he was the one. We had dreams, plans... but somewhere along the way, things changed. He started pulling away. I didn’t see it coming. Then, one day, he was gone.”

Jimmy listened patiently as Bdubs unraveled his story—of nights spent waiting for calls that never came, of promises broken, of memories that haunted him like ghosts. It was clear that the pain ran deep.

“Do you know why he left?” Jimmy asked.

Bdubs shook his head. “No. I asked him, but he wouldn’t tell me. Said it was better that way. But I know there’s more to it. I just don’t know what.”

Jimmy looked at him thoughtfully. “Sometimes, revenge isn’t about hurting the other person. It’s about healing ourselves. But it often leaves scars that never really fade.”

Bdubs stared into the distance, contemplating Jimmy’s words. “Maybe you’re right. Maybe I’ve been chasing shadows.”

As the night deepened, a strange sense of understanding grew between them. Two men, scarred by love, sharing their pain under the cold, indifferent sky.

The following days found Bdubs consumed by thoughts of Etho. His mind replayed every moment—the laughter, the promises, the betrayal.

The desire for retribution grew stronger, blinding him to the possibility of forgiveness or closure.

Jimmy watched his new friend spiral, concern etched in his eyes. “Bdubs, revenge might feel good in the moment, but it rarely heals the wounds. Sometimes, it deepens them.”

But Bdubs was stubborn. “I need to do this. I can’t keep living with this pain inside me. Etho took everything from me. If I don’t confront him, I’ll never find peace.”

Jimmy hesitated, then decided to help. “Alright. If you’re serious about this, I’ll help you find him. But remember, sometimes the best revenge is getting better.”

Their search took them through old haunts—their favorite coffee shop, the park where they first met, the city’s underground clubs. Each place stirred memories that made Bdubs’ resolve waver, but he pressed on.

One evening, they received a tip—Etho was living on the outskirts of Maplewood, working at a rundown warehouse. With a mixture of anticipation and dread, Bdubs and Jimmy approached the building under the cover of night.

Inside, they found Etho, alone, sorting through crates of supplies.

When Bdubs saw him, his heart pounded fiercely—anger, grief, and longing swirling inside him.

Etho looked up, surprise flickering across his face. “Bdubs?”

“Etho,” Bdubs said, voice trembling. “We need to talk.”

Etho’s eyes darted between them, cautious. “What’s this about?”

Jimmy stepped forward. “Bdubs wants answers. And maybe, so do you.”

Etho hesitated. “Alright. Come in.”

They sat in silence for a moment, then Bdubs took a deep breath. “Why did you leave? Why did you hurt me like that?”

Etho looked down, remorse shadowing his features. “I never wanted to hurt you. I was scared. I thought I was doing what was best for both of us. But I was wrong.”

“Then why did you leave without explaining?” Bdubs demanded, voice cracking.

Etho looked up, eyes filled with regret. “Because I was afraid of hurting you even more. I didn’t know how to tell you I needed to go, that I was lost too. I thought leaving was the only way to protect us both.”

Bdubs felt a lump rise in his throat.

The pain was still raw, but some of it softened with understanding.

Jimmy watched quietly, sensing the tension easing. He knew this wasn’t about revenge anymore—it was about closure.

“Maybe,” Bdubs finally said, voice steadier, “we’ve been chasing shadows. Memories. Maybe it’s time to let go of the past. And if you're willing to try, we can make some new ones."

Etho nodded. “I never stopped loving you, Bdubs. I want nothing more than to be the one you love again. No matter how long it takes to rebuild what we lost."

The three men sat in silence, the two ex-ex-lovers smiling softly, and Jimmy feeling ever so much like a third-wheel.

But he himself is smiling none the less, a dopey grin on his lips as he watches his friend's awkward little love story write new lines from where it left off.

A part of this little situation he got himself into reminds him of his own love story and if he could mend what was broken between his own lines of a love story.

Well, if he can help someone he'd just met reconnect with someone he doesn't know, how hard would it be to reconnect himself with someone he knows better than his own mind?

Notes:

This was originally going to be a Jimmy/Bdubs fic but my mind is too obsessed with Ethubs for my subconscious to let that happen apparently

Should I write a second part

If so who should Jimmy’s ex be
