Chapter Text
“The person who does not decide to love forever will find it very difficult to love even for one day.”
— St. John Paul II
The fight was brutal.
The ground stank of ash, ozone, and charred stone. Flames licked at shattered cliffs, their crackle almost drowned out by the pulse of energy tearing through the battlefield. Ki burned the air itself—metallic, sharp, buzzing in the throat like static before lightning strikes.
Goku’s hands were bloodied, scorched raw from blows too fast to see. His breathing rattled through clenched teeth, every inhale dragging smoke and dust deep into his lungs. The taste of iron clung to his tongue.
But the ring?
It stayed.
The simple gold band caught the light every time his fist curled, every time he struck. It glinted stubbornly through fire and chaos. Vegeta noticed first—his scowl briefly cutting sideways mid-attack, eyes narrowing with that flash of something too sharp to name. Piccolo caught it next, the twitch in his brow betraying more than he’d ever say. Even the enemies saw it.
One sneered as his aura flared black and red, spitting sparks into the dirt.
“You’re still wearing that thing? Cute. Easy to break.”
His hand shot for Goku’s left arm, claws stretching for that glint of gold.
But the words weren’t answered. Goku’s jaw set, eyes burning not with reply but with intent. The ground shook under the crack of his fist driving into the villain’s chest. The sound was like boulders splitting underwater—deep, crushing. The earth itself opened under the impact, splitting jagged lines through stone.
The ring gleamed, untouched.
When silence came, it came heavy. The battlefield smoldered like a burned-out forge. The others had withdrawn, bruised, quiet in their own corners. Even Vegeta said nothing—his eyes flickered to the band once more before he turned sharply away, arms crossing in his usual wall of pride.
But in the healing chamber, the silence was different. Thicker. Sterile.
The chamber hummed low, liquid glowing faintly around Goku’s body as it knit broken flesh back together. The warmth of regeneration was dull and constant, seeping into bone and muscle. Still, his hand rested outside the pod, his arm stubbornly bent so that the gold band was never submerged, never pried away.
Dende stood beside the pod, staff loose in his hands. His expression was soft, a frown of both healer and child. The lights reflected in his wide eyes, his voice gentle as the chamber’s hum.
“You could’ve taken it off,” he murmured. “You would’ve been safer.”
The words floated, delicate as ripples on water.
For a long moment, there was nothing but the bubbling hiss of the healing fluid, the faint crackle of distant machinery. Goku’s eyes stayed shut, lashes heavy against his cheeks. He looked younger like that—less warrior, more man.
Then, slowly, his lids lifted. His gaze was raw, tired in ways that battles alone couldn’t explain. His voice was roughened, smoke still in his lungs.
“If I take it off,” he said, each word careful, “I’m not her husband anymore.”
His thumb brushed the ring where it clung to his skin, the gesture unconscious, protective. The band was scuffed now—marred with tiny scratches from stone and fire. But it was still there, steady against the strength of his hand.
He looked at Dende, gaze steady despite the exhaustion etched into it.
“I’d rather burn.”
The healer’s breath caught—he didn’t speak, but something flickered in his eyes. Not surprise exactly, but the weight of understanding too old for someone his size. He only nodded once, solemn, as if keeping that vow safe.
Later, when the chamber drained and Goku stepped out, steam curled from his shoulders. The air smelled faintly of clean water and steel, washing away the battlefield’s ash. His body bore no wound now, but his hand flexed slowly, palm brushing over the ring again, as though to reassure himself it remained.
Outside, the others waited. Vegeta leaned against a wall, arms crossed, eyes sharp but unreadable. Piccolo stood with his usual stillness, cape shifting faintly in the artificial breeze. Neither said a word.
But their gazes fell once—just once—on the glint of gold against Goku’s skin.
No one tried to touch it. No one mocked it. Not anymore.
Goku only smiled faintly, the quiet kind, weary but unshaken. He stepped past them, footsteps echoing down the corridor, and the band of gold gleamed soft under the cold light.
It was small. Fragile. Easy to break.
And unbreakable all the same.
