Golden Hour

Summary:

A little episode tag for "Blue Bird" that I started writing back when the episode aired and never finished until now.

Notes:

What is this? Ruuger posting fic again, and not any fic, The Mentalist fic? Are we back in the year 2015? (I wish we were)

I've gotten a lot of comments & kudos to my The Mentalist fic in the last few weeks, and that (plus the fact that I'm in the middle of a The Mentalist rewatch) inspired me to dig into my WIP folder and try to finish some of the many, many, stories that have been lingering there for over decade.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Lisbon was stirred from her sleep by the change in movement as the car slowed down. There was a fraction of a second after waking when she couldn't remember where she was, until she felt Jane's hand in hers, and the events of the last few days came back to her.

When she turned to look at him, she saw that he was also fast asleep. It had taken Abbot most of the day to get Jane off the no-fly list, and she doubted he'd had more than a few hours of sleep in the last 48 hours.

Jane's trailer park was closer to the airport, and when the cab stopped in front of his Airstream, she gently nudged his shoulder.

"Wake up, sleepyhead. We're there."

Jane opened his eyes, staring at her blearily. For a moment Lisbon felt a pang of fear that he was regretting what he'd told her, but then he smiled in that way that she'd never seen him smile at her before the previous night

"I'll call you tomorrow," he said, and leaned over to kiss her.

She had the cab driver wait until Jane was safely inside his Airstream, before giving him her own address.

When she got home, she put her bag down on the floor and stared at the empty apartment.

She supposed she should feel lucky that she hadn't ended her lease yet, or shipped the moving boxes to Washington, but she didn't feel like spending the night alone. Especially since the last time she'd been in her apartment it had been with Marcus. She leaned to the door and closed her eyes as she remembered the sound of his voice on the phone when she'd told him that she couldn't marry him after all. He was a good man and didn't deserve what she'd done to him, but she knew now that she had been deceiving herself as much as she'd been deceiving him. She sighed, picked up her bag again, and called a cab.

The cab driver was the same one who'd driven her from the airport, but if he remembered her, he didn't make a comment as he dropped her in front of Jane's Airstream. She watched him drive away before knocking on Jane's door. She didn't want the embarrassment of having him drive her back home again if it turned out that she couldn't stay with Jane after all.

"Jane? Are you home?"

The door opened. Jane was in rumpled blue pajamas, toothbrush in hand, hair still damp from a shower, a dab of toothpaste on his cheek.

"Lisbon? Is something wrong?"

"Nothing, I just..." She took a deep breath before continuing. "Can I sleep here tonight? I didn't feel like spending the night at my empty house after all."

He stared at her for a few seconds, as if he hadn't understood her words, and then stepped aside to let her in.

"Of course. Come in."

He closed the door after her, and then just stood there in the middle of the airstream, looking confused. Lisbon couldn't help thinking all those times over the years when she'd just wanted to hold him and tell him that everything was going to be all right. She decided to act on the impulse, and crossed the distance between them and hugged him.

He went very still, like he always did when someone touched him unexpectedly, but then he relaxed, wrapping his arms around her. She could feel his breath stir her hair as they just held each other in silence.

When he pulled away, it was with a stifled yawn. "Sorry, I just took another painkiller and it's making me drowsy." He took a step back, and she reluctantly let him go. He put away the toothbrush, smiling sheepishly. "There's a second bed at the front. I'll get a blanket and a pillow and make it for you."

"Thanks. She rolled her shoulders and stifled a yawn of her own, feeling every hour of the very long day. "I think I need a shower. I assume this rust bucket has one?"

He nodded towards the back of the airstream. "Over there. With real live running water and everything."

When she eventually emerged from the small shower cubicle, she found Jane curled up on the bed, fast asleep. There was an extra blanket and pillow on the bed next to him, and she guessed he must have sat down for a moment after getting them and had fallen asleep. Careful not to wake him, Lisbon brushed her teeth in the small kitchen sink and changed into her night clothes.

Jane didn't stir until she sat down on the bed next to him. He stared at her for a second and then made a gesture to sit up. "Sorry, I must have fallen asleep. I'll make that bed for you."

She stopped him with a gentle touch on his shoulder. "Scoot over," she said.

He moved to make room for her on the narrow bed, and she settled on her side, facing him.

He looked like he wanted to say something, but she shook her head.

"Not tonight. We'll talk about it in the morning. Just go to sleep."

He nodded, and then smiled.
"What?" She asked, touching his face.

"Nothing."

"C'mon, what are you thinking?"

He removed her hand from his face and brought it to his lips, kissing it before answering. *I'm just thinking about tomorrow morning, and how it's been a very long time since the last time I've woken up in bed with a woman I love."

Notes:

Can I just say that there was a very surreal moment when, while editing this, I got to the bit where there's an off-hand mention of Marcus and I had to stop for a moment to consider Pedro Pascal's career. I've said this before, but if anyone had told me back in the day when I started writing this fic that the lovely no-name actor playing Lisbon's love interest would ten years later be one of the biggest movie stars in the world, I would not have believed it.
