Work Text:
Jimin felt her brows furrow before she could even feel consciousness coming back to her body. Something was wrong, she could just feel it.
Keeping her eyes tightly shut, too sleepy to even contemplate opening them, she lightly took in the world around her, trying to understand why something felt stranger than usual.
She started by slowly moving her feet under the small blanket she remembered jumping under as soon as she came home from work earlier that afternoon. It only covered her body from her lower stomach to the middle of her legs, leaving her poor bare feet to fend for themselves in the cold.
Not the most comfortable but this clearly wasn’t what was wrong. In fact, unfortunately, because of her long legs, Jimin was far too used to blankets being way too small to envelop her whole body.
She then slowly moved her hands over her head, extending the movement to her fingers. She let out a soft groan as she felt the sleepiness slowly leaving her body, allowing her to carefully crack her eyes open.
When both of her eyes were open enough for her to analyse her surroundings, Jimin noticed that she was still laying down on the couch, in the same position as the one she passed out in. So the place she slept in wasn’t what was wrong.
What she immediately noticed when she fully stirred awake though, was a weird smell. It felt strangely acidic, but addicting at the same time. Kind of like how the scent of gas felt for some people (including her).
“Shit–!” she heard a familiar voice hiss.
Jimin instantly jumped from the couch, her senses now completely awake and tinkling like never before.
So this was what was wrong!
She ran with the fervor of someone training for a marathon towards her bedroom, the place from where the small scream echoed. With a force she didn’t know she possessed, she pushed the door open, revealing what she could only qualify as a crime scene behind.
There was red everywhere. On the previously stainless floor, on the foot of her bed, and on the desk situated right next to it.
And in front of said desk stood the culprit, hands fully covered in vibrant red, mouth open as if she was about to let out a scream again, and eyes roaming everywhere on the wooden surface.
“Minjeong..?” Jimin looked at the scene with her mouth slightly agape. But her confusion didn’t last long, as it was almost instantly replaced by pearly laughter, her hand instinctively pointing to the woman in front of her. “W–What the hell happened?” she breathed in between two laughs.
“Don’t laugh!!” whined Minjeong, throwing her crimson hands over her head in disbelief. “I was doing so well and suddenly– boom! You know?!”
Jimin clutched her stomach as she fully took in the scene before her, still fervently giggling.
Minjeong, her girlfriend, was standing in front of the desk inside their shared bedroom, an empty bottle of red nail paint lying in the middle of the –now covered– wooden surface.
Jimin could only assume that the reason behind the emptiness of the bottle was the same as why there were some red stains here and there inside the room. And especially on Minjeong’s hands.
Because yeah, Jimin might have been a bit dramatic when she said that there was red everywhere. There were just some small stains here and there, but it was still a shocking thing to barge into your room to!
“I’m sorry but–” she wheezed, stepping towards her girlfriend whose face had already been replaced by a small –and adorable– pout. “How did this happen?”
Minjeong tried to cross her arms, but threw them in the air at the last second, suddenly remembering the state of her hands. “I don’t know!” she whined.
Jimin softly chuckled, grabbing the bottle of solvent from one of her shelves, and placing it on the desk, popping it open with one hand. “I told you already to let me take care of your nails Minjeongie.”
“But I’m not a baby…” pouted Minjeong, her gaze falling to her feet. “You were sleeping and I didn’t want to bother you with this.”
Jimin fondly rolled her eyes at the girl’s words. “You know I don’t mind.” She poured some of the solvent on a cotton pad that Minjeong conveniently brought with her and placed on the bed –as if she knew that this disaster would happen–, and gently took Minjeong’s hand in hers.
“I–”
“What I mind though–” interrupted Jimin, softly rubbing Minjeong’s nails one by one with the cotton, “–is this color. Why red? You don’t like blue anymore? I thought you couldn’t get enough of it.” Her tone was light, betraying her own amusement with the situation.
“Jimin…” whined Minjeong, wriggling around as if poorly attempting to escape from her girlfriend’s hold. “I was trying something new. You’ve been putting blue paint on my nails for like… five months in a row already!”
Jimin feigned shock. “Is this your way to say you’re getting tired of me? Woah… I really can’t believe you Minjeong-ah. You’ve changed…”
“No!” scoffed Minjeong, lightly punching Jimin’s shoulder, her glare making her resemble a puppy far more than she usually did. “It has nothing to do with that!”
Jimin gave her her biggest round eyes (Puss in Boots would be proud), although she was proudly flashing her a cheeky grin. “Ehh? Why then? What does it have to do with?”
Minjeong avoided her gaze, suspiciously choosing to focus her attention on the wall on her left. “With nothing…” she muttered.
Jimin could sense Minjeong’s embarrassment, but still decided to push her girlfriend a bit further.
It was how they always functioned. They were like cat and dog, always pursuing to push the other a bit further in their teasing, but constantly making up in the end. It was like their own little special way to communicate with each other. Like a secret language made of playful jabs and caring undertones.
“Really really?”
“Why are you bothering me like this? I’m exhausted!” pouted Minjeong, although her shy toothy grin betrayed her.
Jimin knew that Minjeong wasn’t exhausted, just a tad dramatic. Just like her. They were… quite similar in that regard.
“Hm?” Jimin poked her girlfriend’s cheek, sensing the tension leaving her lover’s body as soon as their skins came into contact. It was crazy how, despite their sometimes cunning words and messy banters, their bodies always betrayed their real emotions.
“Why did you change?”
“Because you said the other day that red looks good on me and I wanted to surprise you… And since you were sleeping, it felt right to do it without feeling guilty about waking you up. Or… doing it behind your back…” she rambled, nervously fiddling with her fingers, her gaze trained on her feet again.
Jimin’s heart squeezed at the sight. She tended to forget about it sometimes, too used to stand by Minjeong’s side. But she truly was blessed, and probably the happiest woman on the planet. Because only she got to be with Minjeong.
And what a goddamn blessing this was.
“Gosh… you’re adorable,” she breathed, cotton pad falling from her hold as she practically threw herself on Minjeong, engulfing her in a tight bear hug. Minjeong’s hands were still partially covered in fresh nail paint, but she didn’t care.
“Wha–!”
“You’re too cute for your own good, I swear…” sighed Jimin, rubbing her cheek against the top of Minjeong’s head in a cat-like manner.
Their slight height difference truly came in handy during those times!
“J–Jimin,” muttered Minjeong against Jimin’s shoulder, her voice muffled. “Cant… b–breathe…”
Jimin took a small step back, momentarily releasing Minjeong. She flashed her a toothy and cheeky grin, before engulfing her in an even tighter hug this time. She squeezed her girlfriend with so much fervor that Minjeong had to stand on her tippy toes to stay rooted on the ground.
The smaller woman instinctively wrapped her own hands around Jimin’s waist, only realizing after a beat that her hands were still very much dirty from the fresh nail paint.
“Fu—”
“Oops.”
They simultaneously said, their hold on each other still firm despite their words.
“We’re gonna have to clean that,” giggled Jimin, her cheek squeezed against Minjeong’s temple, refusing to take a step back to take a look at the damage on her shirt. If she didn’t see it, it didn’t exist.
Minjeong let out a small groan, although amusement was crystal clear in the way her hands lightly tapped on Jimin’s back, and how the tremor in her own voice —a telltale sign of an upcoming laughing fit— betrayed her feelings. “Look at what you’ve done!”
Jimin smiled even wider. “You’re not making any moves to fix it though.”
“You neither.”
Jimin lightly poked Minjeong’s side, feeling her girlfriend’s head comfortably nestle in the crook of her neck. “Should we stay like this?” she said softly.
“No,” murmured Minjeong, her hot breath tickling the skin on Jimin’s neck. “We need to clean you up. And the room as well.”
“And whose fault is that?” chuckled Jimin quietly, gently twirling them around, their arms still firmly wrapped around each other. With each small alternated step she was taking, Jimin gently patted Minjeong’s back, enjoying the way the girl melted in her hold. “You’re soft,” she mumbled.
She was starting to feel drowsy again just from being close to Minjeong like this. Despite the lingering mess around them, and the one currently sticking to her back.
Minjeong just had this power on her. She only needed to raise one finger for Jimin to feel soft all over; be it outside, with her cheeks immediately flushing at the sight of her girlfriend, or inside, the feeling of her stomach getting mushy all over always taking over her whenever Minjeong was near.
“Don’t you dare fall asleep on me like that,” lightly scolded Minjeong, her own arms tightening around Jimin’s waist, and her own feet following Jimin’s small side steps.
“I would never,” replied Jimin, her words instantly (and comically) followed by a yawn.
Minjeong fondly rolled her eyes, pushing her head deeper against the crook of Jimin’s neck. The movement prompted the taller to stop in her twirling and take a small step back, the back of her legs gently hitting the bed. “Sure, I totally believe you.”
Jimin grinned at the feeling of Minjeong lightly pushing her. Her girlfriend was a real puppy.
Not in the mood to put on a fight (not like she wanted to anyways), Jimin gently pulled Minjeong closer, and carefully laid the two of them on the mattress, making sure to keep her hold steady around Minjeong who immediately buried her face against Jimin’s chest as soon as she comfortably settled on the bed.
“Don’t you dare fall asleep on me like that,” threatened Jimin jokingly, mirroring her girlfriend’s own empty threats.
“Mhm,” mumbled Minjeong, pressing her body closer to Jimin’s. If that was even possible.
Jimin stared at her with a fond smile on her face, her heart unbelievably full. It was crazy how much of a rollercoaster life was alongside Minjeong. One second they were teasing each other, the other they were talking seriously with their heart on their sleeve, and the next, they were cuddling and being all mushy with each other.
“Just give me the nail paint next time, okay? I’ll teach you how you can put it on yourself, but I still want to do it for you. It makes me feel happy to take care of you Minjeong-ah,” she whispered, tenderly running her hand through her girlfriend's hair. Judging from how soft it felt, Jimin guessed that the girl washed it while she was asleep earlier.
“Mhm… m’kay,” murmured Minjeong back, sounding like she was already universes away from the one they physically resided in. “Makes me happy too… I like it when you take care of me.”
Jimin stifled a soft chuckle. “You always get so honest when you’re about to pass out,” she muttered, lightly scratching Minjeong’s scalp. “I should make you feel sleepy more often.”
Minjeong weakly punched Jimin’s shoulder, earning a quiet giggle from the taller. “Means I would see you less. Not worth it.”
“So you can actually get mushy sometimes?” gasped Jimin comically, careful to keep her tone low so as to not burst their soft bubble.
“You really want me to hit you don’t you?”
“I wouldn’t mind,” grinned Jimin.
Minjeong rolled her eyes, slightly shuffling so that she could meet Jimin’s gaze with her own. “Weirdo.”
“Yours,” smiled Jimin proudly, brushing a few strands of Minjeong’s hair away, before placing a feathery kiss on her forehead.
Minjeong let out a small sigh at the touch, mindlessly leaving a small kiss on Jimin’s Adam apple. “Unfortunately.”
Jimin quietly whined. “Hey, stop! You love me!”
“Unfortunately.”
Jimin flicked her girlfriend’s forehead (Minjeong was so sleepy that she didn’t even register it), before gently kissing both of her soft cheeks (Minjeong surely registered this though), her hands carefully cradling them as if she was holding something fragile.
(Minjeong was far from fragile though. To Jimin’s knowledge, she might actually be one of the strongest people she knew. At least, her poor shoulders, who were often at the receiving end of Minjeong’s frustrated smacks, could attest to it.
At the same time, Jimin kind of asked for said shoulders to get hit at all times, so she couldn’t really cry about it. It was just far too tempting to tease Minjeong all the time, given the golden reactions her girlfriend always gave her.)
“Love you too,” she yawned, softly caressing Minjeong’s cheek with one hand, while engulfing her other in her girlfriend’s hair again.
Minjeong answered by leaving another kiss right under Jimin’s jaw, her nose lightly bumping against it in the process. Jimin felt a small shiver from the touch, prompting her to slightly tighten her hold on Minjeong. She didn’t even need to convey it with words for Jimin to understand Minjeong’s obvious reciprocation.
‘I love you more’ was how Jimin interpreted the touch. Because Minjeong was just competitive like that with the silliest of things. Another thing that made Jimin’s heart swell, somehow.
“Sleep tight Minjeong-ah.”
She just woke up from a nap, but it seemed like the universe, aka Minjeong (who was her universe so that fit), really wanted her to fall in Morpheus' arms yet again. And who was Jimin to deny such a prospect of peaceful slumber?
The nail paint could wait after all.
