From bros to something more.

Summary:

A tale of Yuugo and Lucas's relationship and how it progressed.

(set in my modern au.)

Notes:

This one was super hard, cus I didn't know what to do for set in another time. Like I didn't want to do anything too angsty, but all I write is gay ships, and if I did it in the past then I have to talk about homophobia since supporting gay people is a pretty modern thing, (cough cough its only been ten years since gay marriage was legalized in the states, and now theyre trying to take it away again)

so anyways, i hope you like this. I haven't posted to my modern au in a hot minute so I guess thats good.

Work Text:

Yuugo looked around the classroom curiously. He didn’t know anyone in the school, and was a little afraid of the other kids in the room.

He nervously took a step forward to a group of boys, but they didn’t notice him, and Yuugo’s confidence wilted. Yuugo moved to sit in his chair, nervously doodling on a piece of paper.

“That’s really good!” a voice said, behind him. Yuugo turned to see a girl and a boy leaning over his shoulders looking at his art. It wasn’t anything special, just a drawing of some people dancing.

“Yeah, but the clothes suck,” the boy said, squinting at the picture.

“I think it looks good,” Yuugo said, standing up. “And if you don’t like it then you’re a meanie.”

“I was just stating a fact!” the boy said, stomping his foot. “Its not my fault your sense of style sucks.”

“Stop fighting!” the girl cried as the two began wrestling on the floor. The girl tried to pull them apart and soon they were giggling rolling around on the carpet.

“I’m Lucas,” the boy said, holding out his hand. Yuugo shook it, smiling.

“I’m Yuugo.”

“And I’m Dinah!” the girl said, hugging them both. It was then that their trio was born.

“You like her don’t you?” Lucas asked one day in Junior high. They walked in the hallways to their next class and Dinah had just walked past them.

“What?” Yuugo asked, blushing.

“Oh, you do,” Lucas said, wagging his eyebrows. “It’s obvious.”

“What are you going to do about it, jackass?” Yuugo asked, shoving his hands in his pockets.

“Nothing, unless you want my help.”

“Help with what?” Yuugo snapped, walking faster down the hallway.

“Well, how are you going to ask her out, if you’ve never asked anyone out before. You’re kind of a rooky at this Yuugo.”

“And you know so much about whooing girls, Mr. I’ve never been on a date in my life,” Yuugo said, rolling his eyes.

Lucas shifted uneasily, then smiled back at Yuugo. “We could practice with each other.”

“What?” Yuugo asked, stopping in the middle of the hallway.

“I said we could practice with each other,” Lucas said, keeping eye contact with Yuugo. “It’ll be helpful so when you do ask her out, you won’t be as much of a doofus.”

“I’m not a doofus,” Yuugo said, pushing Lucas.

“Sure,” Lucas said, walking at his side once more.

“Fine, just meet me after school,” Yuugo said, shaking his head. “We can try it.”

Somehow that night they had done more than just practicing flirting. They had done something neither of them would admit to anyone much less themselves, they had kissed each other.

A few years later Dinah died. It was a car wreck. The three of them had been driving when a car had pulled out in front of them. Dinah had been the only casualty. Lucas had been driving. That was how he got his scar. Well, now there were so many scars on his face that it wouldn’t have mattered if this was when he got his first one.

Yuugo and Dinah had been dating for over a year then, and he took it hard. Yuugo swore he would never love again, and hated himself for ever finding anyone other than Dinah attractive, even if it was his best friend.

Lucas and Yuugo hadn’t spoken to each other after the accident. They cut all contact, and didn’t hear from each other for years.

Yuugo walked through the grocery store, Ray and Emma at his heels. He just needed some supplies for dinner tonight, and then he would be on his way.

But he froze when he saw him. Yuugo immediately knew who it was, although it had been years since Yuugo had last seen the man.

Lucas had changed a lot since graduation. He walked with a cane, one of his legs a stump, he only had one arm, and his face was covered in burn scars. Beside him was a little boy with stark white hair. He had a patch of hair that was bright red, it looked just like Lucas’s hair.

“Lucas?” Yuugo asked, stopping in front of him.

Lucas stood there for a moment, before recognition lit up his eyes, and he took in Yuugo. He saw Ray and Emma and paused. “You have kids?”

“Kid,” Yuugo said, rolling his eyes. “That one just tags along.” He pointed at Ray who was currently taking apart an old watch. “And you have one too.”

“Yeah, this is Oliver,” Lucas said, showing him the boy. He looked to be a little older than Emma.

“It’s been a while,” Yuugo said, shifting uncomfortably.

“Yeah,” Lucas said, not looking Yuugo in the eye.

“I don’t blame you anymore,” Yuugo said, looking at his feet. “I don’t think I ever did.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah, I was more blaming myself for letting it happen, and I took it out on you.”

“We should get coffee sometime,” Lucas said, smiling.

“I would like that,” Yuugo said, and clapped Lucas on the shoulder. “I’ll see you around.”

“Yeah.”

Little did they both know that come two years time they would be standing in front of an altar, getting married.
