Work Text:
You’ve landed in the softest down,
cherished by one with divine grace.
Sunlight streams golden through eastern windows.
After breakfast, you kiss the angel,
go out to tend your garden,
kneel in the rich, dark earth.
You stroke the thick, glossy leaves,
growing your own Eden. Time quiets.
Then I whisper in your ear.
“Remember me. My brilliant emerald gaze.
My intellect sharp as a knife.
Your words parried mine, swords glinting.
You couldn’t stop crashing into me.
I couldn’t stop singing you starlight.
We had Paradise, before your Eden.”
Your breath hitches. Your heart races.
I could always whet your blade,
make you seethe with feverish want.
Heaven is not your natural habitat.
It’s too peaceful here. You need.
I hear your body sing: more.
I’ll always give you too much.
Air that feeds the roaring flame.
Shh. Your new love is safe.
I have never needed your heart.
I’m the glimmer of your soul.
The faint scent of smoke, wafting.
The melody winding through your dreams.
Moonlight streaming silver through sheer curtains.
Your raven wings. Your serpentine eyes.
To be king, I surrendered you
to a righteous warrior and scribe.
He craves you bitter and fiery.
Dips his pen in blackest ink.
My plush darkness spills into yours.
I hear you both sing: more.
