Work Text:
The Akutagawa household was on a mission. A costume mission. Himari held both her fathers hands as she swung between them, with Chiharu walking to their side sipping on his icee. How he can stand the cold drink in chilly weather? Who knows.
The four of them were on the way to get the kids their Halloween costumes, as it was getting close to Halloween. It was cold outside, everyone had to bundle up into their coats, just like this little family.
Once they found themselves inside, Himari quickly let go of her fathers’ hands and took off with her brother, Chiharu, towards the costumes.
“Chiharu! Himari! What have we said about running inside!” Akutagawa yells towards his kids. He sighs when they don’t look back and looks towards Atsushi who has a lopsided smile on his face. “Shall we?”
Atsushi nods his head and straightens up before they both run after their kids.
They eventually find them right in front of the Dracula costumes. Where they were bickering, loudly. Kind of how they found them too. The two of them had the last dracula-looking costume and they were pulling at it in between them.
“I want to be Dracula!”
“But I should be Dracula!”
“You were a vampire last year!”
“So what? I’m the older one! Respect your elders!”
“Well I'm paler. Just like Dracula.”
“But I'm a boy.”
“Girls can be Dracula!”
And the two continue to bicker at one another.
“Children.” Atsushi steps in, with a tired look on his face.
The two immediately jump apart, the Dracula costume falling forgotten on the floor between them.
“Papa?...” They both mutter.
“Good. Now why don’t you both be a vampire since this is the only Halloween costume?” Atsushi offers now that they have stopped fighting.
His kids look at him like he just told them to pour hot sauce in their ice cream. They look disgusted and disappointed.
“Hah.” Akutagawa chuckles at his kid's expressions.
Atsushi sends a glare at his husband and looks around them. “Or what about you be Batman, Chiharu? You still like him, right?” He says as he grabs his kids' size off of the rack of costumes.
Himari’s eyes light up like a christmas tree at this proposition. “I WANNA BE BATMAN!”
“Himari! Papa said me.”
And just like that, they start bickering again.
The two husbands sigh once more and begin looking for other costumes for their kids.
“Himari, you could be Spider-man or-” Akutagawa starts before he gets cut off.
“GWEN!” Himari turns from her brother to her dad. “I wanna be Gwen Stacy from Spiderverse!”
Atsushi and Akutagawa look between their children, making sure that neither disagree with these options and sigh in relief when there are no more arguments. Seriously, when those two start, they never stop. Sort of like their fathers… But who's paying attention?
They both try on their costumes before they buy them, making sure they fit. Chiharu did a few poses in his Batman outfit, while Himari did her own poses. And if Akutagawa takes a few photos to save in his album of his kids, no one says a thing.
When they walk outside, they are immediately hit with the cold wind.
“Why don’t we grab some hot chocolate fixings and go back home and watch a movie?” Atsushi proposes, wrapping his arm around Akutagawa to give him more warmth. Under his clothes, he has a neat trick where he can grow a bit of fur to keep him warm.
Akutagawa nuzzles into the warmth a bit and smiles at him. “I think that sounds like a wonderful idea, kids?”
“Yeah!” Himari and Chiharu say excitedly.
The four hurry back to their house, making sure to stop at the grocery store for their hot chocolate. When they arrive back to their house, the kids run upstairs to their rooms to grab a bunch of blankets and stuffed animals just like any other movie night that the family has. WHile the kids do this, Akutagawa and Atsushi make their way into the kitchen to start on the hot chocolates.
They work around each other in comfortable silence. Atsushi grabs the cups out of the cabinets and sets up the toppings, while Atsushi grabs their milk and begins to boil it on the stove.
While the milk takes its time to boil, Atsushi turns around to his husband. “Glad we got the mess of the costumes figured out.” He laughed.
“Me too, dear god.” Akutagawa walks up to Atsushi and slides his arms around his waist.
“Imagine what we would have been like if we did Halloween as a kid.”
That makes Akutagawa’s eyebrow quirk and let out a little chuckle. “It’s not the best that we didn’t get to experience such things as a child. But I would do it over again to be here with you and the kids.”
Atsushi smiles and leans in to give his husband a proper kiss. Their lips lock in perfect harmony, keeping it sweet and simple. Atsushi brings his hands to the back of his husbands neck making Akutagawa feel the cold of his ring against his neck.
Atsushi tries to wear his ring outside of work, but is afraid if he uses his tiger paws with it on, it will break. So while he is at work, he wears it on a chain around his neck.
The two are broken from their tender scene by a “Ewwww!” from their daughter. They break away and give Himari a look.
“Is it icky for your Papa to kiss your Dad, hm?” Atsushi asks with a raised brow.
She nods her head and starts making a face when Atsushi presses a quick peck against Akutagawa’s lips again.
“Is it icky for me to give you kisses too then?” Atsushi asks, smirking at his daughter. When she doesn’t say anything, he runs after her to which she sprints to the living room. He knows Akutagawa has the hot chocolate under control, so he sprouts his tiger feet to catch up to her and tackles her lightly to the couch.
Himari is a bundle of giggles and smiles, all while trying to keep her composure of “ew” up. Atsushi is pressing kisses to her forehead, cheeks, and nose, not letting up.
They are both giggling and laughing until Chiharu jumps on top of the two starting to join in on whatever is happening.
“Run while you still can Haru-chan!” Himari screams at her brother.
But she was too late. Atsushi jumps over to Chiharu and starts tickling him while giving him kisses as well.
This lasts for a few minutes before Akutagawa speaks up, “I suppose there isn’t enough room for me to tackle you three as well, correct?” He smiles down at his family when they look up with happy faces.
“There’s always room for you, Ryuu.” Atsushi laughs and kisses him when he leans down for a kiss. This time, Himari only laughs.
“Well before that,” Akutagawa starts after he pulls away. “Let’s get our hot chocolate settled.”
The kitchen table was set up nice and neat with the marshmallows, sprinkles, whipped cream, and chocolate and caramel drizzle. Each of their halloween themed cups set up with their drinks in it.
They line up, letting Chiharu and Himari go first. Chiharu always puts marshmallows, whipped cream, and a little bit of caramel drizzle on top. While Himari puts quite literally anything they put out on it.
One day, Atsushi got excited when Chiharu had his friends over. So he put out any ingredient that he could think of for toppings. When he went to check on them making their drinks, Himari had overflowed her drink with every single topping, had already drunk half of it, and was running off of pure sugar at 9:45 p.m. on a Tuesday.
That was when they realized they needed to manage Himari’s sugar, and keep a close eye on her intake.
This time, she only put the few toppings they put out. Atsushi got his classic hot chocolate with just whipped cream and extra chocolate drizzle. Akutagawa only put a few marshmallows in his.
When they were all ready, they sat down in the living room on the big sectional in the middle. The kids were cuddled with their stuffed animals and blankets on one side, while the husbands took the extended side of the couch that extended back so they could lay down together and watch.
“Alright kids, what did we decide to watch?” Akutagawa asks, remote in hand.
“Hotel Transylvania 3!”
“Again?”
“Yeah!”
Akutagawa just laughed and turned it on the tv. They all cuddled with one another while the lights were off and they were enjoying their hot chocolates.

The movie finished around an hour and a half later. When Akutagawa and Atsushi looked over at their kids, they were fast asleep. Chiharu had his arms around his stuffed animal while Himari had her arm thrown over Chiharu.
The two husbands looked at each other with a satisfied smile on their faces and nodded.
Atsushi goes to pick up Chiharu, while Akutagawa goes for Himari. They manage to pick them both up with almost no complaints. Himari wakes up, looks around and settles herself into her dads arms before going back to sleep on his shoulder. Chiharu is just dead asleep.
Akutgawa puts Himari to bed, kissing her on the forehead with a “good night, Princess.” And he meets Atsushi in Chiharu’s room, watching as he turns on his night light and closes the door.
“Now for the fun.” Atsushi says, wiggling his eyebrows.
“Cleaning.”
“Exactly!” Atsushi whisper-yells, and smacks a kiss on his husband's cheek before heading back downstairs to clean up the blanket and hot chocolate mess.
They work in sync, Akutagawa putting away the ingredients, Atsushi folding the blankets, until they finish and come together to clean the cups, spoons, and pot they used. Akutagawa cleans while Atsushi dries and puts away.
Silence filled them, other than the water running in the background until Atsushi turned to Akutagawa, leaned over the counter and looked at him with his head in his palm.
“What if we were Mavis and Johnny?”
“What.” He asks, not looking at him and finishes cleaning the last glass.
“You know? Our costume! You could be Mavis, I can be Johnny.” He smiles.
“And why would I be the woman?” He raises a brow as he puts the sponge to the side, cleaning off his hands.
“It’s not that you would be the woman, but you have pale skin. She has pale skin. Your hair is black, hers is black.”
“I suppose so.” There’s silence for a few moments as he looks at Atsushi with a glare. “No.”
He meets the look that his husband gives him, far used to the moods he can be put in. “Besides, we can genderbend her, right?”
Akutagawa dries his hands and looks back to Atsushi. “Fine. I suppose the kids will enjoy it.”
“Yay! I’ll go online and buy the costumes tomorrow. They should be here before Halloween.” Atsushi smiles and goes around the counter to meet Akutagawa. He wraps his hands around his waist, leaning close to Akutagawa’s ear. “Now let me show you how I zing for you.”
Akutagawa raises an eyebrow. “Did you seriously just give me a cringey pickup line?” He puts his arms around Atsushi’s neck.
“It worked though, didn’t it?” Atsushi gives him a cheesy smile.
“No it didn’t.”
“Yes it did.” Atsushi pushes.
“Yes it did.” Akutagawa agrees. “Why did that of all things work? What are you doing to me, Weretiger?”
“Not enough, yet.” Atsushi smiles and leans in.
“Oh god, another one.” Akutagawa sighs against his lips.
Atsushi gives him a deep quick kiss. “You love it.”
“I love you.” Akutagawa smiles and kisses him again.

The family is on their way to the Agency for a Halloween party Fukuzawa intends on throwing for the little ones and some of the port mafia members to prove their alliance even after many years. Himari is on Akutagawa's back, while Chiharu is holding onto Atsushi’s hands.
They don’t live too far from the agency because Atsushi has to go to work still, but they live far enough away so they are away from some of the danger. So, the four had to take the train into town.
When the kids walked down stairs in their new costumes and saw that their parents had dressed up as their favorite tv couple, they freaked out. Chiharu badly snuck photos from all angles up at his parents, while Himari kept squealing and looking at them from all angles, very intrigued with her Dad’s fangs, and Papa’s red curly hair.
They were greeted with hellos from the agency when they walked in. Seeing everything decorated so nicely in Halloween decor. Snacks and drinks and candy filled the tables, while music was playing in the background.
“If it isn’t my favorite children!” Fukuzawa smiled down at the tow, laying a hand on either of their heads.
“I’m Batman!”
“I’m Gwen!”
“Oh I see! Very strong Batman. We could use someone here like you! And your agility dear Spider-Gwen, we do need that as well.” Fukuzawa gave them both a piece of candy while they thanked him.
“Ah! Atsushi-kun! Akutagawa-kun! Kids!” How are you all on this lovely Halloween evening!” Dazai came over crouched over. Chuuya followed close behind him, with an annoyed expression, drink in hand.
“Dazai-oji? Why are you walking like that?” Chiharu asked.
“Yeah, and why aren’t you wearing a costume?” Himari chimed in.
Dazai grins like he’s been waiting for someone to ask this. “Oh, but Himari-chan, I am! Why, I’m your Chuuya-oji!”
Himari and Chiharu look between their uncles and look confused.
“And I have to crouch over to be him because the Chibi’s so short!”
Chuuya smacks the back of his head. The other winces and grips the back of his head. “But I bet I still pack a punch, Hm? Hatrack?”
Atsushi laughs at their fighting, taking in their outfits. Dazai is indeed dressed up as Chuuya, Down to the choker and pony tail. He guesses it’s some sort of hair extension. Chuuya is also dressed up as Dazai, with his coat on and even the bandages. He can just imagine what coaxing it took for Dazai to convince him to wear the bandages.
“I’m surprised he convinced you, Chuuya-san.” Atsushi laughed.
“For the last time, quit callin’ me ‘san,’ kid.”
“Quit calling me kid, then, Chuuya-san.” Atsushi fired back.
“Touche.” Chuuya laughed and raised his drink before taking a sip. “And, he promised me something.”
“Whta did he-” Atsushi started before Akutagawa cut him off.
“Don’t-”
At this point, the kids had run off to interact with the other members of the party, having been here hundreds of times already. So they couldn’t hear the implications of this next statement.
“See the choker he’s wearing?” They follow Chuuya’s eyes to Dazai inspecting the snacks across the room. “Now he’s in the collar, I hold the leash.” He smirks.
Atsushi’s face goes red as he tries to stammer out a response. What do you say to your superior giving info about their sex life for the hundredth time? And why does he keep falling into asking questions about it unintentionally?
“Chuuya, please.” Akutagawa pleads for him to stop at that.
He just laughs. “Fine, fine. Anyways, I see Batman and Spider-Gwen. Who the hell are you two supposed to be? Goth bitch and red head simp?”
Akutagawa and Atsushi look at each other and back to Chuuya.
“Pretty much.”
“Yeah.”
Chuuya just raises an eyebrow, expecting a better response.
“Mavis and Johnny, from the kids' favorite movie. I thought it would be cute since they are married.” Atsushi smiles.
“Ah, excuse to wear the wedding ring to work outside of work. I see.” Chuuya laughs.
Akutagawa gives a small warm smile until his eyes catch Ranpo in the corner with the kids, trading candy. He nudges Atsushi. “Ranpo.”
Atsushi’s eyes immediately lock onto the three. “Ranpo-san! You better not be giving Himari more than she needs!” He runs after them when they start to run.
Akutagawa looks at Chuuya who has an amused expression on his face. Atsushi was pretty loud, he supposes. “We do not play around Himari’s sugar intake. I swear on my life, she was crawling up the walls. She doesn’t even have an ability to help her do that.”
“Are you serious?”
“Yes. We do not give her more sugar than she needs. Half the time we give her sugar free things in case she gets into the pantry without us knowing. Halloween is a time to keep watch on that little gremlin.” Akutagawa says with a shiver.
“How do you four do trick-or-treating then?” He raises a curious brow.
“Carefully.” And he leaves it at that.
Atsushi comes in with Himari over his shoulder giggling. “She already ate six.”
The color drains from Akutagawa’s face. “Please tell me they were the mini sizes.”
“You know Ranpo-san never carries the minis.” Atsushi says, pale faced as well.
Chuuya doesn’t know what he should expect, but knowing Himari can be even more excitable when she’s on a sugar rush, he takes a few steps away till he is out of eye sight and paces away.
ᄽὁȍ ̪ őὀᄿ
After their desperate attempts at calming down Himari, with the help of Yosano and Kunikida, they finally stepped out and grabbed Chiharu who was snacking on a cupcake.
“I think we are going to head out so we can take them trick or treating!” Atsushi smiles at Kunikida.
“Of course,” He crouches down to the kids and raises an eyebrow. The past few years, he’s been using his ability to create a trick-or-treating bag for them to match their costume after an agreement that they made.
The kids tell him and he writes out their bags. Chiharu gets the bat-logo in a shimmering black as a big bag, while Himari gets a big pumpkin that is white and has pink spiderwebs on it.
“Thanks Kunikida-oji!” The kids smile at him and wrap their hands around him in a hug.
He smiles with a blush and pats their head. “Anything for you two. Now you two have fun and don’t give your fathers any trouble, yeah?”
They nod and grab onto their Dad and Papa’s hands. “Yes sir!”
So the four head out the doors and take the train back into their neighborhood for some good trick-or-treating.
ᄽὁȍ ̪ őὀᄿ
They finally walked up to the last house on their block who still had their lights on. When they got close enough, they saw that there was already a bowl out. But it was on top of a replica of the scream character. He had on the black cloak, with the mask, and was sitting on the porch swing with a bowl of candy that was still relatively full.
The kids were very hesitant about approaching.
“Come on sweetheart, I’ll walk up with you. Your brother will hold your hand too.” Atsushi looks towards Chiharu who wouldn’t break eye contact with the replica. Afraid that if he looks away, it will make a move.
“Nah uh, Papa. There is no way I’m stepping foot near that thing.” Chiharu says with a slight shake of his head.
“You two, your Papa and I will protect you. We still have abilities.” Akutagawa says, trying to reassure them. Finding it slightly amusing that his children are afraid of a doll.
After some careful reconsideration, the kids agreed, but only if their parents walked in front of them. They agreed, laughing to themselves about it.
The two walked at a slow pace so that the scared kids could follow close behind. They made their way on the porch and inched close to the porch swing with the doll.
“Go on Dad, reach for the candy.” Chiharu says, as he and Himari peak behind their Papa.
Akutagawa rolls his eyes and starts going for the candy. He grabs a handful for Chiharu and goes for another handful for Himari when the doll grabs his hand and moves forward.
Before he can control it, his face turns dark at being startled, and he activates Rashomon, sending a tendril straight through the porch swing. He can’t just sit there and have his family attacked.
The kids scream at the scene and run away, Atsushi, chasing after them knowing Akutagawa can handle himself.
He regains composure and looks at the teen whose mask slipped from his face looking terrified. Akutagawa’s just pissed off now. “Do you realize I could have ended you right here? On your bench? On a Halloween night? Just because you wanted to scare some children.” He spits.
When he gets no response, just scared eyes looking at him. “You are a fool if you think I will not protect my family from a potential threat. Even if it is something as small as a guy in a scary costume.” He rolls his eyes and tries to calm himself. “You are very lucky I redirected it at the last second.”
“I-” The teen gulps. “I’m sorry dude- Me and my friends were just recording a video-”
“A video? You will not be posting this video.” He threatens.
“Yeah- Yeah! Of course not. No- Yuta!” He looks at the open window. “Delete the footage- I- Dude, delete it!” He’s still frozen in place except for the frightened yells in the direction of his friend towards the window.
“Now here is my card. Give this to your caregiver so I can discuss the cost of the bench and fix it.”
“Yeah- okay.” He gulps.
Akutagawa turns at that and leaves to go look for his family. He takes out his phone and sees a message from Atsushi.
7:18pm
Weretiger
Meet at home
Kids are fine
7:24pm
Me
Dealt with the teen.
See you at home.
When Akutagawa arrived home, he locked the door behind him and looked at his kids trading candy at the kitchen counter. Atsushi was watching, smiling down at them and taking the candy they didn't like.
“You really will eat anything, won’t you, Weretiger.” Akutagawa smiles.
Atsushi looks up in surprise, not noticing he had arrived back home. He greets him with a kiss and leaves the counter. “Any candy, sure.”
By the time the kids finished trading out the candy and ate a quick, late dinner, it was pushing 9:30pm. Far too past their bed time. When the two fathers looked down at their kids, Chiharu was already passed out, face first in his candy pile. Himari was fighting off the sleepiness, keeping her head propped up with her eyes fluttering open and closed.
“I think it’s time for bed, Princess.” Atsushi smiled towards his daughter.
“Nah uh. Want… Candy.”
Atsushi circles around to her and holds out his arms. She just falls into her Papa’s arms, passing out with little fight in the warmth of him. He gives her a kiss on the head.
Akutagawa scoops up Chiharu in his arms, using his ability to help a little bit since he’s not the most physically fit to carry an 8 year old. The two go up to their rooms and put them to sleep.
When they close the doors to the kids' bedrooms, they sneak back downstairs to put up the candy and make their way to their own room. They change out of their costumes and chat.
“You triple checked Himari for hidden candy?” Akutagawa asked.
“Even her secret drawer that she hid them in last year.” He changes out of his shirt into one of Akutagawa’s. “Which is just her diary now, by the way.”
Akutagawa gives him a look to which he puts his hands up. “I didn’t read it! I’m not a snoop. I just can’t help but think that the journal that says ’do not touch’ on the front is her diary.”
He rolls his eyes and focuses on the shirt that Atsushi is wearing. “Why do you still insist on wearing my clothes?”
“Because it smells like you!”
“We smell almost identical, Atsushi. We have the same detergent.”
“It’s the principle, then.”
“The principle of what, exactly?”
Atsushi smiles at him. “The principle of knowing I’m yours.”
Akutagawa smirks at him and gives him a wet, open mouthed kiss.
“You know, I kind of like you in this outfit. It’s close to what you wear but different.” Atsushi looks Akutagawa up and down with hungry eyes.
“The outfit, really?”
Atsushi nods his head and heads over to the bed to take a seat. “Please?
Akutagawa looks at Atsushi in nothing but his shirt and boxers then shrugs. “Yeah alright.” He makes his way over to Atsushi and pushes him against the bed, crawling on top of him. “So what part of it does it, hm?”
“The makeup- I think.” Atsushi sighs and grasps Akutagawa’s hips as they roll into his, causing him to gasp.
The black haired man smirks, knowing he has him right where he wants him. “Yeah? What else makes you squirm?” He breathes along the side of Atsushi’s neck, tickling his sweet spot before he kisses down on it bringing another gasp from Atsushi.
“You-” Atsushi is cut off by a loud crash in the kitchen.
The two of them sit up immediately. Triggering their abilities. Atsushi with his claws after he takes off his ring and places it on the nightstand, while Akutagawa has rashomon flowing behind him.
They slowly make their way out the door and into the kitchen, where they see-
“Himari?” The two say in unison as they drop their abilities.
Said child is on the floor with the broken candy jar around her, the piece of glass with her name on it still visible. They decided to make both children a candy jar with their names labeled so they wouldn’t fight and they can control the intake of candy. It was on top of the fridge, but they see where it is now.
“Stay put. Don’t move.” Akutagawa says, extending his ability to her so he can pick her up without her stepping on glass.
Atsushi grabs some slippers and a broom so he can start sweeping up the mess while Akutagawa checks Himari for any cuts from the glass. They aren’t too worried about waking Chiharu considering he can sleep through anything.
Seeing that Himari is safe from injury, he turns the silent kid to look him in the eyes. “Himari, Princess, why were you up?” He asks sternly, but lovingly.
Himari looks between her Papa and Dad before letting tears fall from her eyes. “I just- I wanted- I wanted candy- I didn’t know it was gonna fall. I’m sorry!” She broke into full sobs, gripping her dads shirt between her hands and getting his shoulder wet.
The only thing that Akutagawa could do at the moment is try and soothe her by rubbing her back. “That was probably scary, wasn’t it? Hearing that big noise and falling. Are you alright?” He asked when she was more calm.
Atsushi had finished cleaning and made his way on the floor where Akutagawa had their baby girl in his arms. He rubbed her back as well giving her a kiss on the side of the head.
She put her head on her dad’s shoulder to hide her face. “I’m okay.” Then, after a moment, “Is Papa and Dad mad at me?”
“More worried than mad. That loud sound scared us too. We weren’t sure what to think.” Atsushi said, combing his fingers through her hair.
“That probably wasn’t the best idea to crawl up there with no help and no permission, was it?” Akutagawa suggested slightly, hoping she would get the idea.
Poor little Himari shook her head no in his shoulder. “Sorry.”
“Thank you, Sweetheart.” Atsushi smiled at her. “Lets get you to bed, yeah?”
“Okay.”
The three make their way upstairs to put their little troublemaker to bed, once more. And after making sure that she was asleep, they took both of the candy containers back into their own room so that they could hide them even better than before.
When they close the door behind them, they let out a breath.
“Damn she makes some poor decisions.” Atsushi says.
“Scared the life out of me.” Akutagawa agrees.
“I’m glad she’s okay, though. Seeing her on the ground surrounded by glass and not responding almost gave me a heart attack.” Atsushi admitted, leaning his head on his husband's shoulder.
Akutagawa gives him a tight hug of reassurance and they sat there for a few minutes, surrounded by each other's warmth. “Shall we pick up from where we left off?” He raises an eyebrow.
“No, I'm exhausted.”
Akutagawa deflates a little in disappointment. “But the costume?” He pouts a bit.
“Well they aren’t rentals” Atsushi smirks.
Akutagawa lights up a little at that and continues to change into his pajamas. “I love you so much Atsushi Akutagawa.”
“I love you too Ryuu.” Atsushi says before smiling into the kiss pressed against him.
