Work Text:
This was it.
Sophia had spent countless hours, days, weeks, working on this one project that could change the wizarding world forever. At her desk was scribbled notes jotted down so messily that only she could read it, next to the many papers were items. A decaying leaf, a jar of withered bugs, then another jar filled to the brim with potion ingredients.
Then a knock was heard on the door and Sophia practically shot out of her chair, her brown hair bouncing at the sudden movements. She opened the door to her office which revealed a concerned Sebastian. “Is everything okay Soph? Your letter was very…vague when I got it.” He asked and Sophia smiled so wide he thought her face would bleed. “Everything is perfectly fine, Seb, in fact you’re probably wondering why I’ve brought you here.“
Sebastian nodded as he walked in looking even more worried as he saw the state of her office, with journals on the floor and bookshelves, dust coating the top of said bookshelves. “Yeah, um, what have you been doing in here?” Sebastian asked as he ran a hand through his messy hair. “Ooh, I’ve been researching, studying, planning!” Sophia let out a chuckle as she rummaged through a cabinet on her desk before picking out a piece of paper with large letters written on the top, T.I.
He raised an eyebrow at the paper, the handwriting was a bit neater at the top but slowly got messy as his eyes followed down. “So…what exactly is it?” He asked looking more confused and curious now. “It’s a spell I’ve been working on-“ At Sebastian giving her a glare she continued, “don’t worry, it isn’t anything bad, just someone that might be better than Floo powder.” She waved a hand dismissively even as her brain rattled with excitement.
“What kind of spell are we talking here?” Sebastian asked as he looked over the messy papers on her desk, all intelligible to him. “Well, it’s a type of spell that could fix things back when we were in school.” Sophia said and continued at how Sebastian perked up, “it’s a time traveling spell that-“
“A WHAT?!”
Sophia almost flinched at the shocked tone in Sebastian’s voice. “Er, yes, a time traveling spell-“ now Sebastian was shaking her shoulder and rambling, “Time travel is no joke, Soph! How did you even come up with something so-so!” Sophia shut him up with a hand on his mouth and he paused, realizing how crazy he must’ve looked. “Sorry, it’s just that-“ Sebastian started before sighing and pinching the bridge of his nose, “that what?” Her blue eyes flashed with curiosity as she grinned.
“That this is dangerous.”
Sophia rolled her eyes, she’s dealt with a dragon before, along with the weight of the ancient magic that seemed to pulse in her veins, literally. “Dangerous my ass, you sound like Ominis.” Sebastian opened his mouth to speak before his face flushed pink, Sophia felt her smile soften. “Come on, think of the possibilities! If we could go back in time we could stop Ranrok from existing, we could help people, we could save Anne-“
“Don’t bring her up.” Sebastian practically growled out which made Sophia stop and nod, her smile gone as she got serious. “I’m not wrong, am I?” She asked, seeing in the corner of her eye her own veins that glowed with the blue of magic.
At Sebastian’s tense silence she continued, “You don’t even know about my tests.” Her grin came back as she went over and picked up the jar of dead bugs, watching as Sebastian raised a suspicious eyebrow. “You could’ve gotten those from outside.” He replied, crossing his arms, “you can’t prove time travel with a few bugs. He added in a matter of fact tone. “Well…maybe this’ll change your mind…” Sophia trailed off as she grabbed a poppy that Poppy had given her, fitting. Sebastian watched as Sophia got her wand out and murmured a spell under her breath with wand movements he hadn’t seen before.
When nothing happened he scoffed, “Is that it-?” Sebastian cut himself off as the poppy started to wither and rot away, the petals turning black and stem drooping before Sophia whispered another spell and tapped the flower, it had stopped decaying for now but the damage had been done and the flower snapped off the stem before falling at their feet. “What the fuck…” Sebastian murmured out as he took a step back. “See? Can’t believe you didn’t believe me at first.” Sophia said sarcastically before chuckling and putting the rotted stem down, “it’s a little spell that I like to call tempus itinerantur.” She explained, watching as Sebastian stared at the dead flower on the hardwood floors before he looked up. “Why am I here again?” Sebastian asked, eyes wide with curiosity.
“I want you to help me time travel myself.”
After Sophia spoke Sebastian just stared, the curiosity slowly turning into shock. “Help you-?” He repeated and at Sophia’s nod he paused again, knowing her she would probably just get Ominis or Natty to help her. Never Poppy though. “Fine, I’ll do it.” At Sebastian’s words Sophia grinned and nodded excitedly. “Amazing! Okay, all I need you to do is make sure I get the required time, which would be around an hour before now.”
As Sophia rambled about her plans to simply go an hour in time without disrupting anything major, simple. Sophia had even showed him both types of spells for going forward and backwards in time, with another tiny detail that stopped their travel.
Once they had prepped everything they needed to prep, with Sophia going and saying goodbye to her fiancée and standing on the circle rug she had prepared. “Ready?” Sebastian asked as he kept his wand at the ready, Sophia nodded and brought her wand over her head.
“Ready as I’ll ever be.” And with those words she did the incantation and the wand movements, eyes shut tight.
Sophia opened her eyes to see blueish grey smoke surrounding her and filling her lungs, her eyes widened as this wasn’t supposed to happen. She tried to call out and warn Sebastian but the smoke filled her lungs and made her cough as the smoke suffocated her. The last thing she saw before disappearing being Sebastian with a stopwatch.
“See you on the other side.”
