Chapter 1: Main Character profiles + the making of Orihara Izaya-the infamous informant

Chapter Text

Name: Orihara Minari

Name: Orihara Minari

Date of Birth: 11th January, 1988

Age from where the story truly begins: 16

Biodata: Height – 5'1, Weight – 42 kg, she has anaemia and cysts on her ovaries which cause irregular periods and heavy bleeding hence she has been taking doctor's prescribed contraceptives to regulate her periods and control her bleeding.

Languages spoken by Minari: Japanese, English, Cantonese and Mandarin. She speaks all of them fluently. In fact, at times her English and Cantonese are better than her Japanese since her primary education consisted of them after she had moved to Hong Kong at the age of 6.

Some information: She is very polite, and sweet and values loyalty. Though Minari is pretty shy, she is very friendly and extremely considerate too. Minari is pretty smart – not just book-smart with good grades but street-smart too. Minari is very beautiful – like a fairy as most people would describe, which often leads to her gaining some unwanted attention and comments.

Much like her older brother, Orihara Izaya, she is good at analyzing the characters of people and reading body language. She is very knowledgeable and likes learning about different cultures, scientific facts and geopolitics. She has been dancing since the age of 6. She is especially nice to children or people younger than her and women.

However, she is pretty stubborn and can be too trusting and forgiving at times. She does suffer from social anxiety to some extent. She also has a people-pleasing tendency which isn't malicious at all but it often makes her undermine her own well-being at times.

Background: Orihara Minari is the younger sister of Orihara Izaya. She is 9 years younger than him and since her birth, Izaya has been very attached to her. Since their parents were extremely busy people and spent most of their time overseas due to work, mostly Izaya took care of her and he absolutely loved it. Even her first words were 'Nii-nii', which she muttered while looking at Izaya. Every day little Minari would eagerly wait for her older brother's return from school. However, once Minari turned 6, she was sent to Hong Kong to live with her aunt, with Izaya having no knowledge about it. It shattered both of the siblings. It was a decision made abruptly by her parents, who were rarely home due to work. Her aunt, struggling with infertility and severe depression, had found comfort in Minari during visits to Tokyo, so the arrangement seemed ideal to the adults. For Minari, it was a painful separation. She adored her brother Izaya, who had practically raised her, and the sudden move left her confused and heartbroken. Izaya, then about to turn 15, was devastated. He felt angry even if he knew why she was sent away. Though Minari eventually adjusted to life in Hong Kong, she never forgot Izaya and neither did he. Izaya would often call and talk to Minari and desperately wanted to see her in person but the conditions were unfavourable.....Both of their lives took different paths which seemed unlikely to meet but fate had other plans which ended up making Minari live with Izaya from her teens.

Name: Orihara Izaya.

Date of Birth: 4th May, 1979

Age from where the story truly begins: 25

Biodata: Height – 5'9, Weight – 63 kg

Languages spoken by Izaya: Japanese, English, Russian – He is fluent in all of them. He learnt Russian from an acquaintance and English from a foreign English teacher whom he had known since he was 12. The teacher was from the UK. Since Izaya learnt English from a proper English speaker from a pretty young age, he was able to shed most of the typical Japanese accent and spoke pretty well – instead of Japanese, he sounded like some Malaysian or Singaporean upper-middle-class guy.

Some information:-

At his core, Orihara Izaya is a walking contradiction—a self-proclaimed lover of humanity who thrives on chaos yet fears true loneliness. He manipulates people with clinical precision, stirring conflict purely to observe the unpredictable nature of human reactions. To him, individuals are little more than toys to be played with and discarded once they cease to amuse him. He speaks in mocking nicknames, dances on the edges of violence, and orchestrates Ikebukuro's turmoil from the shadows, all while insisting he's nothing more than an enthusiastic spectator.

Yet beneath his performative cruelty lies a deeply broken man. An atheist terrified of oblivion, Izaya clings to the idea of being remembered, even if it's through hatred. He craves connection but sabotages every relationship, leaving him isolated in a crowd of his own making since he is scared of getting his heart broken. His brilliance in reading people is matched only by his inability to understand genuine bonds—until Minari.

The Exception: Minari

Minari, his younger sister, is the only person Izaya has ever loved unconditionally. From the moment she was born, she became his anchor in a world he otherwise viewed as a game. Her sudden removal from his life at age seven shattered him, and though he masked it with anger, her absence left a void no amount of chaos could fill.

When she returned at 14 and began living with him, everything shifted. For the first time, Izaya had someone he refused to manipulate. Her presence softened him in ways he never anticipated:

Protectiveness - He developed a soft spot for children, seeing echoes of Minari in them. Where he once dismissed vulnerability, he now felt a twisted urge to shield them—albeit in his own, often questionable, ways. Uncharacteristic Sacrifice - He prioritized her well-being over his amusement, even if it meant stepping back from schemes that might endanger her. Emotional Dependence- Minari was his only tether to humanity. Her kindness forced him to confront the emptiness of his "love" for others, leaving him both irritated and strangely grateful.

The Impact of Minari's Presence

With Minari beside him, Izaya's contradictions sharpen. He's still the agent of chaos Ikebukuro fears, but now there's a line he won't cross. His games have limits—ones defined by her safety. To outsiders, it's baffling: the man who drives people to ruin is also the one who cooks meals for his sister and threatens anyone who looks at her wrong.

Izaya has exceptional physical skills too.

Freerunning & Parkour Mastery – He navigates the city like a shadow, scaling buildings and vaulting obstacles with effortless precision. His agility lets him escape (or provoke) threats on a whim, often while laughing. Unmatched Evasion – Dodging is second nature; he weaves through attacks like a spectre, toying with opponents who can't land a hit. Switchblade Savant – His knives are extensions of his will. He throws them with inhuman speed and accuracy, capable of: Slicing through metal rods, banner poles, and even splitting lampposts mid-flight. Landing strikes before the blade is seen, making his attacks nearly invisible. Pinpointing weak spots to disable foes without killing (a "merciful" touch he finds amusing).

Though Shizuo is physically the strongest man in Ikebukuro and Izaya mostly avoided direct hand-to-hand combat, his fighting skills and raw physical strength are no joke either. Without this strength, he couldn't fight toe to toe with Shizuo.

Background:

Izaya Orihara - the infamous information broker in the city of Ikebukuro known by everyone as being "dangerous" or rather "unpredictable". But there's a part of him that a lot of people don't know. Before the infamy, Orihara Izaya was the perfect student—debate champion, track star, and honour student, collecting awards with the same detached curiosity he applied to observe his classmates. While others bonded over lunch breaks, Izaya preferred the library's quiet isolation, maintaining his philosophy: "Close enough to watch, far enough to remain untouched."

Yet there was one exception to his emotional distance—his little sister, Minari. In their parents' frequently empty penthouse, Izaya became her entire world. He bathed her, fed her, soothed her nightmares, helped with homework, took her to the park and even to school or daycare and cherished the way she'd light up when he came home. She was the only person who ever made him feel needed.

Izaya knew he was a top student, however, he did not think the people around him were idiots and did not look down on them.

At this point, his observations were not used for ill, but rather a simple hobby, but slowly it was turning more and more into an obsession. His chaotic life changed after meeting fellow middle school student, Shinra, who immediately assessed Izaya's personality and tried to convince Izaya into creating a biology club.

At first, he declined his offer and kept an eye on Shinra until he suddenly understood: Shinra was his opposite because, unlike Izaya, he had no interest at all in human beings. This confused Izaya, who eventually agreed to become the Vice President of Shinra's club so he could study him more closely.

At a club expo, Shinra entrusted Izaya with their presentation, but Izaya transformed the club into a gambling ring, partnering with Nakura. Despite Shinra's protests, Izaya ignored him. When Nakura lost a bad bet, he threatened Izaya with a knife, demanding his money back. Shinra intervened, taking the knife for Izaya, which made Izaya realize he envied Shinra's detachment from the world due to his love for Celty. Izaya then manipulated the situation, asking Shinra to falsely accuse him of being the attacker while vowing to make Nakura suffer. Afterwards, Izaya was taken into protective custody and began building his infamous reputation.

What Izaya didn't know was that this incident would rip his beloved baby sister away from him. Despite these changes in him, Minari's presence held him back from doing anything too dangerous.

On Minari's 6th birthday, their parents arrived unannounced. No warning, no goodbyes—just a brisk announcement that Minari would live with her aunt in Hong Kong. Izaya, then 15, was given no say.

His last memory of her was Minari, sobbing, clinging to him until their mother pried her fingers loose. Izaya's smile never wavered—"Be good, okay?"—but his hands shook. The door shut. The car drove away. And something in him shattered.

Even though they kept in touch via calls...it felt empty....The only human being who loved him unconditionally and vice versa was taken away from him. This made Izaya further descend down a more dangerous path.

By high school, Izaya had transformed. He rarely attended classes at Raijin Academy, preferring to stalk Shizuo Heiwajima through Ikebukuro's streets—testing his limits against the one "human" he claimed to hate. His feud with Shizuo became legendary, but even as he dodged flying vending machines with a grin, part of him wondered: Would Minari recognize this version of me?

Through Kine of the Awakusu-kai, he built his information empire, trading secrets with the yakuza. Every manipulated gang war, every manipulated life, was another distraction from the hollow space Minari left behind.

Izaya surrounded himself with damaged girls—Saki, Nozomi, Mikage—who worshipped him like a cult leader. He "saved" them from abusive homes, in his own twisted ways. By his early 20s, he became the infamous informat and one of the most dangerous men in the city. His intellect led him to make a huge amount of money too. Izaya's cover-up for his job was financial planning.

When he engineered the Yellow Scarves' downfall, abandoning Masaomi as Saki lay bleeding, he told himself it was just another experiment. But the satisfaction felt hollow. Minari would have cried for them, he realized—and that thought angered him more than any of Shizuo's punches.

Even at his most ruthless, traces of the brother Minari knew lingered:

He kept a faded photo of her tucked in his wallet and a framed picture of them together as kids was kept on his table.

He'd tense when passing playgrounds, memories of pushing her on swings flashing unbidden....He had developed a soft spot for children because of his sister – giving anonymous tips to the authorities about child abusers and bullied kids, and anonymously donating to charities for kids.

When Aoba Kuronuma mirrored his tactics too perfectly, Izaya's irritation stemmed from seeing his own reflection—the man Minari hadn't been there to witness him become.

Despite everything, he was still a human...with some conscience...He was not a sadist...He had fears...he was terrified of making connections with others which would only lead to heartbreak by them leaving him yet loneliness ate him inside too. Despite how dangerous Izaya might appear, he is an ordinary human being who possesses neither an extraordinary inclination to violence nor a capacity to murder a person in cold blood. Some people stated that he was a greedy and impulsive person who just followed his interests. According to Shiki, Izaya was "a child with too much power", which made him especially dangerous. However, that wasn't the entire truth – which especially got exposed after Minari came back and started living with him at the age of 14. Everyone was surprised to see some changes and a hidden side of the infamous informant.

"People think of him like some cold-blooded monster, but he's more human than anyone I know; he's so fragile inside. If you pumped him full of love and betrayal and such, I think he'd fall apart. I think that's why he decided to love humanity by letting everything wash over him. Do you see what I'm saying? He accepts everything, but he doesn't take it in. He lets it wash over him."

Name: Hanaoka Yoshiaki

Date of Birth: 2nd February, 1988

Age from when the story truly begins: 16

Biodata: Height – 5'9, Weight – 65.5 kg.

Languages spoken by Yoshiaki: Japanese.

Some information: He's cold, distant, and doesn't bother with unnecessary words—when he speaks at all. Yoshiaki isn't the type to pick fights, but he finishes them without hesitation, his kickboxing skills making him a brutal opponent. Despite his delinquent reputation, he's sharp-witted and capable of pulling great grades when he actually cares enough to try.

Most people find him unapproachable, and he prefers it that way. His responses are blunt, his patience thin, and he has no interest in pretending otherwise. Yet beneath the icy exterior, there's a quiet, unspoken protectiveness—especially toward those who can't defend themselves. Despite what people think of him, Yoshiaki is very kind-hearted and a secret softie, his softness can only be made to come out by a special person...who unfortunately hasn't come into his life yet. He has very few people he can refer to as friends and he likes it that way, he would rather have one true friend than a bunch of snakes pretending to care about him. If he didn't have such a reputation, then he would've become a heart-throb among the girls because of his handsomeness and coolness.

Still, his temper is quick, his fists quicker, and crossing him is a mistake most only make once.

Background: Hanaoka Yoshiaki was born to a normal family. His parents were genuinely in love with each other and their son was their whole world. The three of them lived together as a happy family until....Yoshiaki lost his mother to an illness when he was 10. It was a curable illness but the treatment was costly and due to their financial conditions at that time, the family couldn't afford the treatment and she passed away. This loss devasted his father, Shiro and little Yoshiaki himself. After losing his wife and the love of his life, Shiro threw himself to work and often drank alcohol after a hard day to cope with the loss. However, he did stop drinking recklessly after he realised that if something happened to him, his son would be left all alone. Shiro started doing overtime, trying his best to provide for Yoshiaki while working as a blue-collar worker at a demolition company. However unintentionally, due to him working overtime, he started spending less time with Yoshiaki which really hurt the boy. Since he had lost his mother, he longed for more time from his dad. As he grew up Yoshiaki turned more and more emotionally closed off and reserved. He constantly got into fights and troubles, leading to detentions and multiple complaints to Shiro. This often caused arguments between the father and son and led to a strained relationship between the two of them. Yoshiaki partially got into trouble to gain more attention from his father....wishing that maybe Shiro would focus on him more now instead of doing overtime. However, despite the current status of their relationship, both of them cared deeply for each other and Yoshiaki loved his father more than anything and vice versa.

Before joining Raira Academy, Yoshiaki used to be a member of the Yellow Scarves for a very short while - just 4 months before deciding to quit. The day he quit, he had to tell the leader. Masaomi Kida about his reason for his departure. Yoshiaki told him that if his father found out about this...he would be heartbroken and he would never be able to look into his father's eyes without feeling shame. Surprisingly, Masaomi empathised with him and let him go, but they kept in touch and became friends. After the downfall of the Yellow Scarves and Saki's injury, they didn't talk for almost 3-4 months before reuniting at Raira as classmates.
