The Rest of Our Lives

Summary:

Everyone says they’re resting now— that their fight is over, their story finished. But some bonds don’t vanish; they wait. And sometimes, even death isn’t enough to keep two souls apart.

OR: What if Naruto and Sasuke did die after their fight in the valley of the end? What if the world had to find a way to continue without their sun and moon?

Notes:

HI! WRITING THIS FOR FUN WHILE I WORK ON THE OTHER ONE!

Chapter Text

The world was quiet.

Only the river moved— red and gold under the dawn.

Two bodies lay upon the shattered stone of the Valley of the End, their blood seeping into the earth that had borne their final clash. The statues of Madara and Hashirama no longer stood tall and silent above them, they were now demolished on the ground. Their ancient feud reflected once again in the two boys.

Naruto’s breath came shallow and uneven.

His eyes— once so full of fire— now flickered like a dying flame. The scent of iron and earth filled the air, and every breath hurt more than the last.

“…Heh…” Naruto chuckled weakly, turning his head just enough to glance at the boy lying beside him. “Guess we… really did it, huh, Sasuke?”

Sasuke didn’t answer at first. His chest rose faintly, every inhale a quiet battle. The morning sun broke through the mist, touching his face— pale, battered, streaked with blood.

Finally, he smirked, the corners of his lips trembling. “You idiot… You still can’t admit defeat even when we’re both about to die.”

Naruto laughed— soft, broken, but real. The sound carried across the valley like a ghost of the boy he’d been.

Silence fell again. Only the river spoke.

After a moment, Sasuke’s voice broke through, quieter than before. “You… You should’ve just let me go.”

Naruto turned his head fully now, forcing his one remaining arm to press weakly into the stone. “You know I couldn’t. I told you, didn’t I? I’ll never let you be alone again.”

Sasuke’s eyes closed. “You always say the most infuriating things.”

“Yeah,” Naruto whispered, his voice trembling. “But… I mean them.”

The sun crept higher, washing the valley in gold. The blood between them shimmered like liquid fire, their wounds mirroring one another— perfect opposites, bound by stupid fate.

“…Back then,” Sasuke began, the words halting, unsure, “when we were still at the Academy… I used to hate how bright you were. You’d smile even when everyone ignored you. You’d fall, fail, and still keep shouting that you’d be Hokage.”

Naruto’s gaze softened.

“I thought you were stupid,” Sasuke continued, his voice breaking on the edge of breath. “But… deep down, I envied it. You had something I couldn’t have. Something… I didn’t understand.”

Naruto’s eyes glistened with tears he could no longer wipe away. “You didn’t have to understand it, teme. You were already part of it. You were my goal… my reason to get stronger.”

A long silence hung between them— heavy, but tender.

Sasuke turned his head just enough for their eyes to meet. “…Why, Naruto? Even after everything I did… why did you chase me?”

Naruto’s smile was faint but full of warmth. “Because, stupid… I loved you.”

Sasuke’s breath hitched. The words hung in the air— pure, fragile and real.

Naruto’s eyelids fluttered, the edges of his vision dimming. “Guess I’ve… been in love with you since we were kids. Didn’t even realise it till now, on the brink of death.”

The wind moved softly through the trees above, carrying the faint scent of the forest and morning dew.

Sasuke exhaled slowly. His heart— so long locked away in ice— trembled.

“…You’re such a fool,” he whispered. “Because I… I loved you too.”

Naruto’s eyes widened, then softened. Tears streamed freely down his face.

They both laughed then— quiet, broken laughter that turned into coughs. The sound mingled with the rushing river below, fading into the world’s breath.

Their blood had pooled together now, red threads intertwining between them. Naruto’s remaining fingers twitched weakly. Sasuke mirrored him with his own. They couldn’t touch— but the blood between them did, glowing faintly in the morning sun.

To anyone else, it might’ve looked as though they were holding hands.

The light grew brighter.

“Hey, Sasuke…” Naruto’s voice was barely more than a whisper now. “You think… in another life… we could’ve been happy?”

Sasuke’s eyes softened— the Sharingan faded away, revealing dark, human eyes for the first time in years. “Yeah… We already were.”

Naruto smiled, tears spilling down his cheeks.

The sun crested fully over the horizon, washing them both in light.

And for a moment— just a moment— there was no pain, no war, no loneliness. Only two boys who had chased each other all their lives… finally side by side.

As the world brightened, their eyes slowly closed.

The river carried their reflection— Naruto and Sasuke, at peace, the dawn painting their blood like a bond that could never be broken.
