Work Text:

“There isn’t much to say about my halves. They were never pleasant to be around, so I tended to stay away. I’m… not sure what’s going to happen next, especially since they seem to be gone for real this time, but I’ll find a way to make it work. I always do.”

“I always say that I won’t hesitate to kill them, but, naturally, I do. I don’t think I’ve ever really made an attempt at either of their lives. Of course, it was only a matter of time before they did to each other what I was supposed to do first.”

“After everything, we just split and fall back into the same patterns. I’m not sure how I managed to have hope for so long. Nothing really seems right anymore. I never hear yelling in the middle of the day. I never leave my room to see the house trashed from all the fighting. I barely even hear from… Her. Not anymore. I’ve tried to restart things, trust me, but it just isn’t working.”

There are no cameras. No microphones. There is nobody to talk to. Silence is only peaceful for so long.

“I remember when the sensitive one would wake up. Always too early. He’d stumble around, too tired to keep his eyes open, at least while he still had them. Otherwise, he’d stumble around, knocking shit over, unable to see. My fault, though I didn’t mean to. I never do. Never did. It’s just so irritating, dealing with those two all the time.”

There is blood on the walls. There is blood on the floors. There is a hint of electricity in the air. Only a little. There is nobody else home. Of course. Dead people don’t exactly count.
Though were they ever really considered to be people?

“I feel like a toddler. I’ve started drawing on the walls. It helps, makes the blood seem less… real. Well, I might as well continue on with the previous topic. It wasn’t very nice when the other one woke up either. Such a smartass. Pretentious as hell with an ego that could support at least 15 people. Does that even make sense? …Either way, he was a pain to deal with. At least he was better than our Heart.”

There are crayons scattered across the floor, some broken in half. Glitter covers about half of the surfaces in the room. Flies are buzzing around, gravitating towards a dark and filthy corner. There are wires and brains strewn out across the floor, some sticking to the wall as well. There’s a partially dried puddle of vomit in the middle of it all. With close enough attention, a maggot, or two, or ten, can be seen wriggling around. Mold is starting to form as well. A container of pink and red glitter is lying on the floor next to it, the contents spilling out like a sad attempt to lighten the mood.

“We used to have a pet, but I’m pretty sure he ran off the other day. I miss him. I’d go look for him, but I’m not allowed to leave. I’ve never been allowed to leave. I think our god hates us. Hates… me. I’m the only one left, after all. I know she’s at least given up on us. Me. This is hard to get used to. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do. I was only here to take care of them. Now they’re gone. Is this some sort of punishment?”

Underneath the couch, there are a few feathers. Like most everything else, they’ve been covered in blood. It’s almost pretty.

“I know I should’ve tried harder, but I was just so tired. Every time, it ends the exact same way. We’re okay for a bit, then we fall apart again. I guess I just wanted to see something different happen for once. Or… Honestly, I think I was afraid. I looked into his eyes and there was so much behind them. They weren’t exactly the right color either. It’s like they were changing. Usually when the two of them would fight, his eyes would show his frustration, his anger, but nothing else. This time, they…
I don’t know. It’s like he was fighting himself. I saw him trying to calm himself down. I saw him look anywhere but at Heart. I saw him crying. Then, obviously, he killed him. Heart was just on the ground. He wasn’t moving. He wasn’t breathing. It was horrifying, and I know our Mind thought the same. He just stood there, shaking, crying, covered in his other half’s blood. We looked at each other, and he got this weird look on his face, like he was going to do to me what he did to Heart. The second I saw him start moving towards me, I ran. I ran and hid like a coward. I could’ve fought, I know.
Not even a minute passed when I heard it. The gunshot. The thud. The cracking of bones as one fell on top of the other. I didn’t bother with checking though. I was too afraid. I sat, and hid, and waited, and eventually just fell asleep. When I woke, I wasn’t really able to remember what had happened, and so I left my room, thinking everything would be fine. The smell hit as soon as I opened my door. It was horrible. If I wasn’t used to it by now, I’m sure it still would be. Then I saw them. They were in a little pile on the floor and there was blood everywhere. Mind’s head was nearly gone and Heart… really living up to his name. His heart was just there. You could see right through him. There were bones sticking out of his flesh and his neck looked really weird. I couldn’t see his head at all, but only because Mind was lying over it. There was blood still dripping from the ceiling and down the walls.
That was when I tried to restart. I was more desperate for another loop than ever, though I guess this one still hasn’t really finished.”

There is still a way to finish it.

“I haven’t heard from Her at all yet. I’m starting to think I never will. She’s given up on me, I can tell. At this rate I might as well give up on myself too. Maybe it’ll fix this. I never touched the gun. It’s still where it’s always been.”

With trembling legs and equally shaky breaths, the Soul, disheveled and faltering, faces the room where it all happened. There are mold spores in the air, various critters dead on the ground. Sitting in a large dried up puddle of blood is the gun that Mind had used to kill Heart and then himself. Soul’s gaze is locked onto it as he stumbles forward. He lets himself fall to his knees and he grabs the gun, the smooth, cold metal feeling odd in his hands. He slowly points it at himself, hoping that it’s loaded. There is hesitation, naturally, a painful reminder of how he could’ve prevented any of this. Desperately, he slips his finger over the trigger.

The loop can only restart once they’re together, after all.
