Work Text:

Groggily, Jack cracked open his eyes. Confused - and still half asleep - he fumbled for his phone in the dark and yawned. He could just about make out the fuzzy glowing numbers without his glasses, it was 2am. Weird, he usually slept like a baby though the night. He rubbed the sleep dust out of his eyes, and as he began to come to his senses, recognised the odd, overarching feeling of something missing. Just a sense of wrongness, discomfort.

After lying still for a minute or two trying to dispell the feeling and fall back asleep, he decided to bother Oscar about it. Well, not bother exactly, just roll over and give him a hug to settle his strange nerves. They weren't really cuddly in bed, preferring to sleep back to back so they had their own space but felt eachothers presence - though sometimes they woke up with their limbs tangled together, a quick kiss or an arm thrown across eachother during the night was always appreciated. Oscar wouldn't mind.

Trying to make the bed squeak as little as possible, he rolled over and - Oscar wasn't there. It suddenly clicked, that was the odd feeling Jack had. It was surprising how long it took him to figure out, it wasn't exactly hard to notice that the familiar presence of a 6'3 man who slept in your bed every night was missing.

Where would he be though? Jack quietened his breath and waited, but the apartment was silent. No doors creaking, no water running, no almost silent snoring. Hm. Running a hand through his hair, messy and tussled on one side and all flat on the other side, he swung his legs off the side of the bed and  grimicing as bare feet met the vinyl wood flooring. After grabbing his round-frame glasses, he made his way out into the living room.

It was pitch black, except for a warm tendril of light stretching across the floor from a door adjacent to where Jack was standing. Oscar's office. As he crept closer the quiet clicking of a mouse could be heard, along with the rhythmic scrolling of the scroll wheel. Then, he heard a faint "ah, scheiße.." from behind the door and couldn't hold back a fond smile as he reached for the handle.

The harsh change in lighting made him squint, when he recovered he again couldn't help but smirk at Oscar's shocked face, like he'd been caught in the act.

"Jack! Did I wake you?" he asked softly, one hand worrying at the stubble on his face.

Jack stepped further into the room. "Nah, don't worry about that," he reassured.

"Ah, good."

Jack's eyes flicked up to look at Oscar's monitor, Geoguessr was open, obviously. He wasn't sure what he expected.

"What'cha up to?"

Oscar broke eye contact, wringing his hands together. "Y'know, getting some practice in. I've been feeling rusty."

"At two in the morning?"

"Well, um-"

"While your boyfriend's sleeping all alone, cold in bed?" he interrupts, playing up a sad face.

"Jacky... I'm sorry,"

They stare at eachother for a few seconds before bursting into a fit of giggles.

Jack stands over where Oscar's sitting, the only time he gets to look down at him, and takes his head into his hands. His thumb caresses his cheek, smoothing over his rough stubble that he was slightly jealous of.

"I think you're good enough already. Well, you're the best player I know. We can practise together tomorrow, but come to bed with me now, okay?"

The face Oscar makes as he leans into his touch and looks softly up at him makes him melt and butterflies fill his stomach. He just nods sweetly, reaches to turn off his monitor and stands up.

Just before Jack turns off the light in their bedroom Oscar pulls him close by wrapping his arms around him. He slightly nuzzles his face against his and peppers kisses along his cheeks and jaw while Jack breaks into a wide smile, face flushing as he holds Oscar back.

They settle down under the covers and Oscar's already yawning as soon as his head hits the pillow.

"See, you are tired."

"Hmm.. maybe," he mumbled back faintly.

Jack giggles and as they turn their backs to eachother Oscar says, "Sweet dreams Jacky. Love you,"

"Night Oscar, love you too," he smiles as he begins to doze off.

Somewhere, half-conscious, he feels a light kiss on the back of his neck. He makes a mental note to return it in the morning.
