Work Text:
Sisko presses the chime on his son’s door. “Jake? It’s Dad.”
Jake opens the door, smile fading when he sees his father’s serious expression. “Is everything alright?”
“Can we talk?”
They sit on the couch. “What’s wrong, Dad?”
Sisko takes a deep breath. “Nog’s been injured.”
Jake’s shoulders instantly stiffen. “Is he okay?”
“He’s stable.” Jake relaxes minutely. “But his left leg was badly injured, and Doctor Bashir couldn’t save it. It had to be amputated. He’s going to need time and a lot of physical therapy to recover,” Sisko says. “But he’s going to be okay, Jake-o.”
Jake nods. “Thanks for telling me.” He stands up from the couch. “You can go now.”
“Jake,” Sisko says. “I know this is a lot. If you want to—”
“What? Talk?” Jake snaps.
Sisko holds up his hands. “I know you’re upset, but—”
“Yeah, I’m upset. Because this is your fault.” Sisko opens his mouth to protest. “I’m not talking about the war or his assignment. I don’t care about that. But you let him join Starfleet. You signed his letter.”
“Jake…”
“He would have been fine if it wasn’t for you,” Jake says. “So just go. I don’t want you here.”
