Before the Rain stops

Summary:

Kuroo… the child is yours.

A training camp connection grows into something far more complicated than either Kuroo Tetsurou or Tsukishima Kei is prepared for.

———

This is a long, slow-burn fic with heavy emphasis on character development. The story also deals with mature themes including A/B/O dynamics, but it’s subtle and not full blown like many other fics. The characters with their personalities come first and then their 2nd gender.

Tags may be added or adjusted as the story progresses. Please mind the warnings and take care while reading.

Notes:

Hey guys! I'm back again with a new fic. Since I recently started university and found myself with more time on my hands than usual, I decided to write this fic so that my English writing skills don't go to waste. I would like to say that since the beginning of my Ao3 journey, ca. 2020, I have always read Kuroo/Tsukishima fics and always come back to them. In 2020, the amount of fanfics felt endless under this ship, but recently it has gone down, which even prompted me to write this to give back to the community. The 2 fics I liked the most were For You, I'd Do Anything by Lorele and Fractured Glass by shadow_dragon19. Thank you to the authors; check out their stories. Before you read the story, all characters are owned by Haruichi Furudate, and if characters are not, I will write that in the notes of certain chapters. Thank you for giving this a chance, and enjoy reading this!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

The rain poured down around us. Our hair and our clothes are drenched. My eyes reflect the current weather. I look at the man in front of me, whose hazel-colored eyes were staring into my soul.

Tsukishima: Kuroo… the child is yours

I finally tell the man in front of me, as my lips quiver, a secret I’ve kept from him for years.

Kuroo: What…

He breathed with hurt and confusion in his voice.

My heart was pounding in my chest, anxiously waiting for his response, the weight of my confession hanging heavy in the air. The rain continued to pour, reflecting the emotions that are hanging in the air.

---
It all started when I, Tsukishima Kei, was 16.

I had just presented as an Omega at the end of middle school, which was not bad by any means, but I would've rather been a Beta. A regular, schmegular Beta, who had a faint scent, doesn’t go through heats (or ruts) and whose second gender didn’t drastically influence their first gender.

But life doesn’t ask for opinions.

The upsides to it were that in this day in age, Omegas have rights and don’t get looked down on (that often in public) anymore. Privately was another story. Of course, prejudices still exist, with a lot of people seeing Omegas as weak baby-making sex-obsessed machines that need an Alpha at their side to protect them.

On the first day of high school, I woke up to my alarm ringing. I didn’t want to get up and leave my warm, cosy bed for the cold room. Not even 5 minutes later, my mom knocks on the door, forcing me to wake up. What a drag. I put on my glasses and move out of bed. After I get ready, I put on a scent patch to weaken my scent, which is required for school, like attendance or uniforms. When I finish up in my room, I head downstairs to the kitchen to eat, grab an apple and leave the house. Usually, everyone is gone in the morning, leaving me alone.

As I walk out the door, my best friend, Yamaguchi Tadashi, who is an Alpha, is waiting for me in front of my house so we can walk to school together. As I approach him, I can already smell his nervous, faint minty scent.

Yamaguchi: Tsukiii, what took you so long?

Yamaguchi says, giving me a gentle smile

Tsukishima: Sorry, Yamaguchi, I wanted to stay longer in bed

We start walking down the pathway. For the fact that Yamaguchi is an Alpha, who was supposed to be tall, cool, confident and strong. Yamaguchi is a timid and quiet person. He also usually keeps to himself. That’s why I think we get along very well. Opposites attract, while I am usually kind of a dick to everyone in my vicinity, he was a lot nicer. The two of us still tease people together, but Yamaguchi wouldn’t purposely hurt someone.

We met when 2 guys were bullying Yamaguchi and I so happened to see it. I went up to them and told them to back off and since then, he has been following my trail. We started playing Volleyball together, too. A sport I don’t necessarily care about, but I am very tall and I have been playing since I could think, so why stop now? On top of that, Omegas were generally rarely seen in sports, let alone in a boys' team. Mostly because Alphas and Betas were more “stable” or some shit, at least on paper. So it wasn’t banned, just unusual and the percentage of omegas in male sports keeps on increasing per year. But in this small prefecture in Miyagi, Japan, far away from the capital cit,y there is a very, very high chance that I was going to be the only omega on the team.

We make our way to the Karasuno High School Volleyball Club to sign up. We are immediately greeted by an Alpha who had brown hair and brown eyes and was shorter than me.

Unknown: Hey, welcome to the boys' volleyball club. Want to sign up?

He says with a friendly smile

He smelled like dark chocolate.

Tsukishima: Yeah

He hands each of us a form to fill out. It had the basic info like name, date of birth, ethnicity, birth place, second gender and if Alpha/ Omega, then next expected heat or rut cycle. We fill it out and hand it back to him.

Daichi: Tsukishima Kei and Yamaguchi Tadashi.

He read with a grin

Daichi: Welcome, I’m Sawamura Daichi, but everyone calls me Daichi and I am the Pack leader as an Alpha. The rest of the team will be here tomorrow. You’ll meet them then

Tsukishima: Alright then, see you tomorrow, Daichi

I say, tucking my hands into my pocket.

Yamaguchi waved, smiling and we headed to class.

I stared out of the window for most of the lessons that day. My mind wandered to the thought of what kind of people I’d meet tomorrow.
