A Book a Day Keeps the Noises at Bay

Summary:

[I need books on children.]

Wang Yi jolted a little, a flicker of disappointment rushing down his spine to coil in his gut. Of course, someone as perfect as her would be taken.

"Follow me." Wang Yi signs out, only to pause and start reaching for his phone, but she only nods and steps away from the counter, waiting patiently for him.

Work Text:

Wang Yi stared down at his coffee like it held the keys to the universe. Seated quietly behind the library's front desk on a Sunday morning, it might as well have. Silently, he took a sip of his rapidly cooling drink before placing it down and getting back to work.

In a while, the library would be receiving a new shipment of books that needed to be organized and distributed to their place in the university's library. As a student worker, Wang Yi tended to take on the more manual type of labor, which he was grateful for since it meant he didn't really need to talk to many people.

Today, he only needed to shelve the books meant for usage; a senior librarian would deal with the books that needed to be placed in the archive.

Just as Wang Yi began getting up to start preparing for the delivery, a tap on the desk drew his attention. Wang Yi glanced up, a look of annoyance on his face, only to freeze as he met the eyes of the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen.

Long black hair and the most magnificent eyes he had ever seen, Wang Yi found himself unable to look away, like prey pulled into a spider web Wang Yi was enchanted by the very sight of her.

The silence stretched for what seemed like forever before she tapped the edge of the table once more, turning her phone towards him.

"You know sign language?" He couldn't help but question.

[I do, learned it a couple of years back.]

The two walked between rows and rows of books, a comfortable silence settling over them despite how lively they're conversation was turning out.

"You've met Mr. Yan?"

[Yeah, he's really annoying.]

[Like, honestly, who wants to hear him yap about his conspiracy theory every class?]

"They're conspiracy theories? I thought he was talking about a novel he read."

For that comment, Wang Yi was graced with the most angelic snort he'd ever heard as well as a string of laughing emojis.

Too soon and too late the duo reach the childcare section, leaving Wang Yi a scarce few moments alone with her before they parted ways forever.

Because there was no reason for her to look in Wang Yi's direction when she already had a lover who she planned to have a child with.

The two split apart as they searched for the book, Wang Yi did his hardest to search even as his heart broke with every turned over shelf. After a few moments Wang Yi stepped away, a book clucked tightly in hand as he made his way back to where his beloved was searching.

Wang Yi held the book out until she finally turned towards him, and it occurred to him that Wang Yi didn't even know her name.

Maybe it was for the best, if he didn't know her name maybe he could get over her faster.

She took the book from him just as he felt a buzz from his pocket, pulling it out Wang Yi almost dropped it as he read over the text.

[So, wanna help me make a baby?]

Wang Yi stumbled back in a panic, waving his hands and shaking his head in denial. Quickly signing out. "No! I didn't want to get in the way of your relationship. I was just-"

She grabbed Wang Yi's hand to catch his attention, gesturing towards his phone.

[I'm not in a relationship, but I am looking to start one so]

[Wanna make a baby?]

Wang Yi stared at at the message, the at her, then back at his phone, before he was able to think about this more his phone buzzed again.

[I'm Zhang Lan by the way]

[Want to discuss this over some food?]

Instinctively Wang Yi found himself nodding and following her out before he even realized what he was doing, glancing at the hand in his, Wang Yi found that he didn't really care about whatever consequences his seniors had for him once he came back for ditching work.

Notes:

Zhang Lan saw Wang Yi once and decided, yep, that's my husband.
