Chapter 1: My Hero

Chapter Text

A loud crash echoed through the street outside of Simon's window. A blinding explosion followed shaking the ground below him. Simon was immediately startled awake and falling off his bed. He hazly looked around the room before realizing the sound was coming from the outside.

It's been the 3rd time this week he had awoken to the sounds of explosions, gunshots or the clanking of metal on metal. He slowly got up, putting his glasses on his face before pulling back the curtain to see what new supervillain had disturbed his morning. He saw two blonde supers accompanied by a man dressed in an icy blue, skiing across the road, keeping chase on an armed truck of delinquents.

'I should really think about moving; Yet again this occurs all around the city, if not worse.'

He looked at the clock reading, 5:37 am. He hurriedly got to folding his bedsheets, taking a morning shower, cleaning up his already extremely clean room, cooking breakfast and finally making himself coffee to take to work. He was happier this morning compared to the day prior. With the multiple noises serving as wake up calls, his sleep had been interrupted, causing him to arrive late to work for the first time. Gladly, today was a better day since he made it to work a half hour before his usual arrival.

'I'll finally be able to work on those tedious NSA cases, and maybe finish them before the due date.' Simon was too lost in thought, dreading the extreme work load he needed to get done before noticing that his "Favorite" co-worker Benny, had finally arrived.

"Hey Simon!!! How's my favorite guy in the whole firm doin'?" he bellowed, wrapping his arms over Simon for a suffocating hug.

"Good morning to you too Benny..." Simon croaked in return. It's not that he particularly disliked Benny, it was just that the man could be a little too affectionate with everyone. Including their boss; who had always explained she was far from a 'touchy person.' Some would think he would get used to his co-worker's hugs after years of working at the office, but every single day Benny's bear hugs miraculously got stronger.

After Benny's arrival and the rest of the firm, he was able to finally find himself in a state of concentration at his office. No buzzing conversation, no disturbing incompetent questions, no need for him to continuously avoid eye-contact, no one offering him cheap 1-dollar watery coffee, and no one pressuring him to "help" with their assignments. He finally sat at peace, having only his fancy stationary, case files, Jazz/Classical music and the smell of fruity coffee beans wafting in the air to keep him company.

That was until a loud bomb had detonated directly next to his office. Simon tried to flee the scene, only making it outside his office door before being buried in mountains of debris and rubble. He was only left with a small pocket to observe the chaos unraveling in Front of him. He saw the same group of criminals that had interrupted his morning. All wearing ridiculously striped suits, armed with bombs, guns and God knows what else.

Simon was stuck observing the criminals from underneath the rubble. Immediately a piercing pain had distracted him from the disaster unfolding. He hadn't realized from the shock his body had initially been struck with, to notice the metallic rods piercing at his ribs and the heavy rubble crushing his limbs. Crimson red slowly started dripping from his lower back. His arms followed, leaking scarlet due to the splintered wood planks beginning to dig at his biceps. He quickly began shouting, hoping that a super would take notice of muffled cries emanating from a mountain of wreckage.

No one appeared to listen to him, he desperately tried to stay awake; It had already been a miracle that he'd survived this long without fully fracturing anything. His vision quickly grew fuzzy, his head dizzying, and his cries grew quieter and quieter and his eyes slowly became heavier and heavier. Simon had already begun to see black when he heard the sound of rapid footsteps approaching him

"Help me... please—" he faintly cried out, before fully succumbing to his aching body. Finally he felt at rest and lost all his consciousness.

A radiating warmth consumed him, along with a cape-like material blanketing his body. Slow circular soothing movements could be felt on his back. A low giggle resounded against him making him flutter his eyes awake. He couldn't see anything besides blue & yellow blobs.

"C'mon buddy wake up! There's still lots of people for me to save. Especially the hot dames, although I'm pretty sure I already saved all of them here."

"I— what happened???" Simon questioned groggily, groaning at the pressure accumulating in his head. His entire body felt shaky and loose.

"You were caught in the rubble after a bomb detonated next to your firm." The super replied unfazed.

"I— what???– theres no way—" he shot up, quickly regretting it as his headache worsened at the swift movement, he moaned at the excruciating pain. He dug his head deeper into the mans chest, a failed attempt to ease his pain.

The pain was causing him to become increasingly dazed and irritated.

"No wonder you took so long..." the brunette muttered in a vexed tone, recalling how long he waited for someone to rescue him.

"Jesus man what ever happened to 'Oh thank the heavens! Gamma Jack has saved me! Thank you noble super!'?" Retorted the blonde.

"I don't even know who you are man!", simon argued dazedly.  Simon's response was met with an extremely perplexed face with a hint of shock.

"Are you serious!? Do you not recognize who you're looking at?" he shouted.

"No I don't! I— I quite literally cannot see anything besides various blobs of color! Thanks to you my glasses were crushed right before my bones!" Simon snapped, while slurring through his words.

His face quickly grew heated as the Blonde super closed in on him, allowing him to observe every detail of his face. He looked like 'a roman god...'

"Recognize me now you asshole!?" Barked the super. "I— uhm—" Just by having the man's face a few inches apart from his, all his coherent thoughts dissapeared and his headache worsened. Simon was reduced to nothing but a blushing school girl. Besides the fact he already had an intense fever forming, he grew even hotter at the emberassment.

Jack's angry face began to change into one of amusement. He began to chortle, desperately trying to suppress a loud snort. Simon only grew angrier making him even more flushed.

"You know— I don't think I've ever made a guy this flustered before. The ladies; Always. But guys? Never!! I think this only proves that my original title was better!" He lets out a chuckle. His memory suddenly comes back 'Handsome Jack.' He is currently in the arms of the one and only Handsome Jack. He recalled reading his section in the newspaper, quickly growing bored of his boasting and overwhelming confidence. In person on the other hand, he was absolutely captivating.

"YOU'RE HANDSOME JACK?" He yells.

"Ehhh— Used to be. I was rebranded to 'Gamma Jack', trust me doll I aint' that happy 'bout it either"

They finally arrived at the temporary infirmary set up dozens of blocks away from the disaster-striken city. Simon quickly jumped off Jack's arms and flung himself on the nearest bed, wanting to get away from the man who had emberassed him.

"Hold on! I never got your name!" Jack called out.

'Why in god's name would he want my name?'

"Uhh— It's Simon..." he replied hoarsely. His body punishing him for attempting to walk, and flinging himself onto a hard bed.

"Get well soon Simon!" The super exclaimed before rapidly shooting off into the sky.

As soon as he was gone Simon collapsed onto the bed, finally being seen by a medic. His entire body shuddered at every single touch, burning and aching as the nurses bandadged him up. It wasn't until then that he realized he kept Jack's cape.
