Chapter Text
The last mission was intense, to say the least, in a lot more ways than just one. Do Gi had to return to the army, resulting in him disappearing for a few weeks. And Go Eun could say those weeks were the worst she had in a good while, but when she saw the person that became so… dear to her getting shot several times and then falling off of the cliff?
Yes. This is probably the worst and the scariest moment in all the years of work of the Rainbow team. Just as, if not more, terrifying than getting kidnapped by the very same dimwit that ruined Go Eun’s sister’s life. Being completely helpless isn’t something Go Eun could ever get used to.
Thankfully, Do Gi managed to survive and even managed to get out of the situation without breaking a bone; the general he fell with took most of the hit of the water instead of him. But he obviously still needed medical assessment for a few weeks or so, though everyone knew that he would leave in a day or so.
That’s why Go Eun stayed with him for a whole night, despite Jang’s, Park’s, and Choi’s endless protests.
“You have to rest as well, look at your wound!”
“He’ll be fine, you should sleep. Look at those eye bags.”
But could Go Eun really care about something as simple as dark circles under her eyes when someone she wasn’t indifferent towards lay in front of her after saving the world once again? That’s a dumb question. Right after the doctor treated her bullet wound, it took her all the decency she’d collected over the years not to run towards Do Gi’s hospital bed.
Just to see if he’s still warm, breathing, safe and sound.
Do Gi slept soundly all night and even a little longer, since after the adrenaline rush his body completely gave up. Out of habit he looked around at first to understand where he was right now. A hospital bed, and... a stuffed toy right next to his pillow. The very plushy he once gave Go Eun so that she wouldn’t feel lonely in the truck. He almost wanted to sit up when he finally registered a soft weight of something over his own hand.
Go Eun’s hand was firmly holding Do Gi’s bigger and rougher one. Her grip was so strong it was as if she thought that if she let go he would disappear, just a couple weeks ago. And it seems like it haunted her even in her dreams, judging by the faint dried-out tear stain on her cheek.
And Do Gi would really not want to ever see her cry, especially because of him. But it keeps happening again and again; the dangerous nature of their works calls for that. No matter how carefully or cold-mindedly Do Gi steps on a mission, at some point he’s practically forced to commit something reckless. Not to mention the never-ending fighting he endures.
For now, all that he could do, before she woke up from whatever dream she was having, was to hold her hand in return. Weakly, since he had just woken up, but enough to stir her up from sleep.
“You’re awake? You really took your time…” Go Eun mumbled, quickly collecting herself after sleep. She looked exhausted, most likely having slept only a few hours or so, her hair was all messy too from last night.
“Yeah, I’m sorry for keeping you waiting,” Do Gi answered, letting a weak chuckle out. His voice was a little hoarse from sleep and dehydration.
All the memories of what happened before he blacked out were spiraling in his mind, but he was doing his very best to ignore them for now. He wasn’t going to make Go Eun worry about him more than she does already. Then, he remembered something. He spoke again, sounding almost agitated now, managing to sit up.
“Where are the others? Is everything okay with them? Are they…”
To that, Go Eun just let out a sigh, close to an annoyed-but-not-really one, and forced him to lie back down, lightly pressing on his shoulders. Here he went again, being all concerned about everyone but himself. A trait of him she both admired and hated to no end. The strongest person she knew was the one that had no idea how to properly take care of himself, it would be almost ironic if it weren’t so frustrating.
“Lie down, a doctor said you have to take it really easy for a while. Our colleagues are all good, don’t worry.” She stated as if it’s a well-known fact that he just made her repeat at least a hundred times.
For a few moments they just looked at each other before realizing that they did it for a tad bit too long and looking somewhere else. That’s when the memory of Go Eun getting hurt the night before finally registered in Do Gi’s mind, and his eyes frantically looked her up and down. Or well, as much as he could from his current position, from her face to her shoulder, which was clearly still aching.
“Are you okay? It’s all my fault you got hurt, you should be the one resting right now.”
“I’m fine, it’s nothing compared to what you’ve been through. Besides, if I were sleeping in a hospital bed right now, who would’ve looked after you, hm? So stop with all that and get some more sleep. You deserve that.”
Go Eun’s words were just as firm and quick that Do Gi, as usual, couldn’t even argue with her, really. Because he knew better than to try to convince her otherwise. And there wasn’t a single time when she would say a wrong thing anyway, so for now Do Gi just went with it. He could use some more sleep, after all. And her presence right now was more than enough to lie back and close his eyes, to lower his guard and get at least a bit of normalcy he hadn’t felt in years.
