Stars Above

Work Text:

The luminous, full moon was looming above the monastery. The sky was indigo with streaks of crimson shooting across. All above Pia, countless shimmering constellations from the sixteen realms shone above. She was sitting cross legged, her notepad resting next to her foot. Her pastel green eyes shot from one star to the next, her mind jotting down its size and history.

Her chirpy yet static voice whispered to the lights above. “Two billion light years away, The Wlydness.” The data coursed through her data bank like a zap, as she kept gazing at each wonder. Until a few minutes later, she met back with her now smudged checklist. Fifty boxes were checked off, except for the last two. “‘Befriend Jordyn.’”

She let out an exasperated chuckle. “Yeah, right.” She lifted her right arm where a rectangle imprint rests near her elbow. She tapped it, making the line open like a tiny door. Inside were her comm links, a recipe, and dipped space for her trusty pen. She scratches off the Jordyn box with reluctance. She wanted to give her the best impression she could. Who doesn’t love a good Power Point presentation? Fritz and Spitz clapped, and so did Caid, though he was more focused on his brownie. Bonzel approved in knowing silence. Nayte was asleep. Then there was scruffy brunette, Jordyn. Who sat there with her arms crossed, a deep scowl on her face. Her brows furrowed; her lips pursed in annoyance. Even her brown freckles grimaced. She sighed, as she sat down the notepad. How was she going to convince her to join the team? Nayte had come around, maybe she could too. A familiar tug pulled at her robotic heart. Which forced her to look at the other unchecked box. ‘Confess to Nayte.’ Fumes bloomed out of her ears. She cupped her ears in embarrassment, as if that could stop her blushing.

She groaned and played with her braid’s point. “What am I going to do?” She gazed in desperation at the stars.

A clank against the clay tiles emitted. “About?” A smooth, low boy-ish voice said behind her. She snapped her attention; a surprised ‘eep’ came out. There was the shapeshifter, looming above her. He was still in his leather dark violet suit, and his bright fluffy hair was swopping against his eye. Pia’s grey cheeks bloomed in a rosy pink. He looked as irresistible as a geometry equation. Complex yet entertaining.

A slight crease formed on his face. “You’re worried.”

Her eyebrows rose as well. “Huh? Pfft. No”. She dragged out the no to emphasize her point. The purple-haired dude cocked his head to the side. She sighed, her shoulders shrugging. “Yeah, I am.”

His heavy buckled boots inched to her left, he then plopped on his butt. His eyes met the vast constellations. Pia eyes zoomed in, a whirring sound going off in her brain. His eyes were dark as spilled ink, his short lashes draped like a curtain against the infinite darkness. The stars shone brighter, not in the sky but reflecting in his eyes. Those eyes, like black holes grasping everything in their path. Stealing asteroids, bits from planets, everything. Everything, including Pia. Nayte’s chest rose, exhaling a soft sigh. Pia’s body shook as it broke the comfortable silence; they didn’t even know, had been there. Her gaze diverged to the courtyard.

“Is this just about Jordyn?” Her bright green eyes whirred wide at him.

She stuttered a bit. “How did you-?”

She was cut off by his nod towards her opened note pad, which box fifty-two was still visible. His hand slid closer to it. The heat rushed through her body; the rosy tint took over her grey face. Oh, no, He’s seen the checklist! She thought. It’s over, It’s over, It’s over, It’s over! The whirring in her brain screeched to a stop when he retracted his hand to his buckle. Her heart unclenched, phew.

His lips quirked into a light smile. “You think out loud.” A faint blush spawned across his nose; she couldn’t tell if she was imagining it or not. Regardless, it made her heart stutter like a malfunctioning clock dial. Wait, that implied he was watching her.

She chuckled. “How long you were watching me?” She asked with a coy smirk. There, it was again a frost of blush across his face.

He smiled, some blush fading away. “Mm, not too long. Though you need to stop trying so hard.”

She gasped, offended. “That’s mean!” Nayte, chuckled in response, his gloved hand covering his mouth. A tic that Pia absolutely adored. She huffed, before zapping him with a hint of frost.

He jolted from the impact and belted out. “Hey!” His cry echoed throughout the courtyard. Two birds flew away from a nearby tree from the sudden noise. Their wings fluttered with the breeze. Pia smirked, her brows furrowing with mischief.

He rubbed his forearm, and whined. “That was cold.”

Pia flipped her braid in front of her shoulder, fidgeting with the point end. “You’re such a baby.” She teased.

Nayte continued to rub his arm. His voice pouted. “Whatever.”

His eyes dimmed, half lidded. His eyes bore into her; her breath hitched; the whirs stirred. Her shoulders relaxed and she began to lean toward him. His chest rose as his breath stuttered quietly. The breeze lifted his pink bangs, draping over his right eye. Her brain whirred again, focusing on his dead ends. Without thinking, she brought her pointer finger to his strand, wiping away from his eye. His chest rose she shifted closer. Her metallic legs grazed the tiles, squeaking. Which was pretty embarrassing, but she didn’t let it deter her. She lifted them swiftly and rested them on to his knees. Now both were fuzzy -wuzzy pink. Her finger twirled his hair; his smile was content. Though he was content like this, Pia was not. She dropped her finger to his cheek, cupping it before encircling him with her cool thumb. She felt a small shiver from the thief.

“Are you uncomfortable?” She knew he never liked the cold.

Nayte’s eyes shot to her thumb. “Not at all.” The whirring came to an end. Pia collided with his lips; it was chaste and warm in contrast with her mouth. They pulled back, their eyes wide and wild with ‘oh my gosh, did that just happen!?’. He looked at her grey lips, before going back, rushing; his hands went for her wrists. Bringing them to his chest. Their fingers interlocked; he wasn’t letting go. Pia's whirrs went off and deepened the kiss. Nayte emitted a small groan, a sound that Pia had never heard from the purple-haired boy. His shoulders relaxed, and his hands began to go up and down her wrists. Is this what intimacy is? Is this what Nayte likes? Nayte’s tongue slid against hers. An electric shiver went down her spine; it was strange yet pleasant. Pia mimicked his movement, experimentally, which made Nayte chuckle and pull back.

Her heart sank, and her face flushed. “Ah! I’m sorry, that was so stupid.”

He lifts her knuckle to his lips. “No, it’s fine.”

“Again?”
