Work Text:
Lufel stares at Nagisa from the counter, curiosity shimmering behind his eyes with every blink.
Nagisa carefully takes the chocolate balls out one by one to place them onto a plate. He vaguely remembers seeing a bag of edible glitter around, but that would probably be hard to eat…
He nods to himself and offers a smile as he places the plate in front of his owl companion.
“There you go, sweetheart.”
“Hoo, much obliged,” Lufel flaps his wings before he takes the first piece of chocolate into his beak.
Nagisa expects him to bite down, maybe have something nice to say to Nagisa, but for some reason Lufel halts in his movement.
His heart leaps to his throat.
“What’s wrong, Lufel? Is it bad?”
Instead of answering, Lufel bites down. The initial crunch of the chocolate in Lufel beak pierces the room—and right through Nagisa’s body.
Sweat gathers in Nagisa’s palm while he bites his lip. The anticipation is getting to him, wrapping a chilling cold over him, deafening him, expecting the worst from Lufel.
Maybe he shouldn’t have made these chocolates. Maybe he should have just given them to Shun, or Ashiya, or Kira. Can owls even eat chocolate? Did Nagisa accidentally poison his companion—
“This is marvelous, Nagisa,” Lufel at last speaks up and dispels the haze that set over the boy.
“Really?” He can’t stop himself from asking, his fingers tugging at his bangs. “You think so?”
“I wouldn’t lie to you about that!”
Nagisa watches the owl closely, searching for any signs Lufel isn’t telling him the truth. All he sees is that familiar sparkle in Lufel’s eyes—a sparkle he has whenever he gets excited about something.
He nods, slowly.
“I’m happy you picked me to give your chocolates to,” Lufel continues and flaps his wings. “Our relationship isn’t what you would call normal since I’m not exactly human, and yet you rejected every single girl who contacted you.”
“It doesn’t matter who messaged me today,” Nagisa says, almost whispers, and steps closer to press a chaste kiss onto the top of Lufel’s head, “I wanted to spend Valentine’s Day with you, Lufel.”
“The feeling is mutual. You’re my sweetheart, after all.”
Blood rushes to Nagisa’s cheeks.
It’s odd; Lufel is an owl, and yet Nagisa could swear Lufel’s face softens on him in the same way it always does when Nagisa does anything that helps him regain his desires.
“Now then,” Lufel flaps his wings again, “I believe you didn’t have a chocolate yet. I can’t go out and get you some, nor can I make something the same way you did, but I can do this at the very least.”
Lufel picks up a ball and holds it in his beak, then hops closer to where Nagisa is standing.
Nagisa blinks at him. It’s making for a quite adorable sight: Lufel with a ball of chocolate in his beak standing near Nagisa and looking at him expectantly—wait.
“Are you…” Nagisa begins but trails off, another layer of red setting on his cheeks.
Lufel doesn’t answer—not that he’s able to when he has something in his beak. He waits patiently, while Nagisa looks around the living room and even stares at the balcony just to make sure no cats are peeking in.
Nagisa closes his eyes and leans in, his lips parting to accept the offered chocolate.
It is Valentine’s Day, doing something like this has been inevitable from the start.
