Chapter Text
Solitude is what Fyodor Dostoyevsky prefers. Quiet, calm and plain. He enjoys spending his days alone and focusing on his studies rather than relationships. It’s not that he’s mute or has social anxiety, he just prefers being alone. He has one friend, but he lives overseas and is simply an online friend who he finds matches his own intellect.
Fyodor has spent his past 16 years of school by himself just as he liked.
Now on occasion Fyodor gets courtship. It’s inevitable being an omega. He’s aware he’s considered attractive for an omega. If he weren’t he’d probably be considered ugly. However, his delicate features (chronic illness symptoms) just attract alphas.
Lots of alphas approach him since he seems weak, and while he’s taller than many omegas he doesn’t look at all like an alpha. According to his older sister he couldn’t even pass as a beta. He’s not even totally sure where the omega gene came from. Usually one’s trait comes from parents or grandparents. However, on occasion may a beta give birth to a recessive omega. But even then at least a great grandparent has the trait.
It’s Monday and today starts the beginning of a new school year. Many students are nervous or stressed about not knowing anyone in their classes, however Fyodor doesn’t mind at all. He’d rather focus on the actual class than whether or not he knows someone in the class.
He sits down in his first class. He usually sits in the middle on the side. It’s the best place for quiet as the back to loud kids, and the front is just uncomfortably close to the teacher. He sets his bag down and looks up. He blinks when he sees a very… large alpha. Well he’s not for sure, but looking like that what else would he be. He’s probably over 6 feet tall, broad shoulders, and muscle that’s noticeable through the summer uniform. Likely he plays a sport or is just really into working out.
Fyodor finds himself watching the alpha as he sits right next to him. There’s like maybe 5 people in class so far and this guy sits right next to Fyodor???
The guy smiles and plops himself down looking at Fyodor with intently, “We had math together last year remember? I’m Nikolai,” He sounds nice, but Fyodor will not fall victim to this alpha’s manipulation.
Fyodor nods and looks back at his phone ignoring Nikolai. However, that seems to make Nikolai more intrigued and leans forward, “Is the Fyodor Dostoyevsky, one of the most wanted omegas in the whole school, ignoring me?”
“I am not that wanted.” The omega responds coldly. As if he’s desired. He ignores every alpha that talks to him.
Nikolai blinks surprised from that, “You know people talk about you all the time. You never talk and you’re all nonchalant. Do you have social anxiety or something?”
Fyodor scoffs and rolls his eyes, “No. I simply don’t wish to talk to you or most people.”
“C’mon I wanna be friends!” Nikolai whines. Before Fyodor can reply one of Nikolai’s friends sits down and says something to him, causing the alpha to turn away.
Weird.. It’s all weird. From what he remembers Nikolai is quite popular, and very well liked. Last year he remembers seeing him surrounded by various omegas during courting week. Now that Nikolai reintroduced himself Fyodor remembers more things about him.
First, he’s pretty sure Nikolai does gymnastics at a gym unrelated to their school. Second, he’s oddly smart. Of course, not enough to challenge Fyodor, but he’s extremely knowledgeable in sciences. Nikolai is very theatrical despite not caring about theater. In fact, he’s denied the many requests from the department in being in their plays and musicals. He says they’re boring.
The man is also a dominant alpha, though he never really gives into his instincts. He smells…unique. Almost woody with a hint of ash. Not that Fyodor will ever say so or even likes Nikolai; he quite enjoys his scent.
The bell rings signaling classes start. The class goes by just fine. Fyodor is left alone and listens to the teacher’s introductions. The next class period Nikolai is there too! What the hell is this?! By 7th period Every. Single. Class. Fyodor has is with Nikolai fucking Gogol.
He’s wondering if Nikolai bribed an administrator or something because there’s no way this was just a coincidence. He’s pissed off now. He has no peace. His tranquility during school has been destroyed!
He’s exhausted by the time school ends and flops into his nest. He naps for about two and a half hours before his mother wakes him up for dinner.
He eats quickly. It was just chicken and some sides. Rather simple but enjoyable. His older sister hadn’t yet started her new year in university so she’s still home. She tries to talk to him but he brushes her off tiredly.
After dinner he sleeps even more. Not until he wakes up the next morning does he realize he had started his heat. He takes his suppressants and grumbles lying back in his nest. His older sister comes into his room to wake him up and notices him lying in a bundle of blankets and pillows on the floor. She remembers it’s a nest and brings comfort to an omega.
“Fyodor? You up? Mom’s makin’ breakfast.” She says walking into his room clueless to his distress.
Fyodor grunts and flips onto his stomach, “I’ve started my heat. Tell her I cannot go and bring my food up as always.”
Fyodor spends the week writhing around in his nest uncomfortably. His mother delivers his food to him and makes sure he’s taken care of. Since his family is all betas they don’t really have a scent so Fyodor has an uncomfortable unscented nest. What’s worse is he spent the whole time thinking of a stupid white-haired alpha.
He’s never thought about him before. Why now of all times! It just makes his heat 10x worse because he wishes he had an alpha with him. While he does relieve himself during the time, it only works for a small while before he’s once again uncomfortable.
When he arrives back to school he wears a scent blocker as his scent is still a bit strong. He has so much work to make up as well. It’s the worst part of being an omega. Constantly missing school. Thankfully, mating cycles are an excused absence.
When he sits down in his first period he sighs and lays his head on his desk tiredly. He smells a familiar scent next to him.
“Where were you? You’re here the first day then gone?” Nikolai laughs assuming he skipped or hit sick.
Fyodor scoffs and shakes his head, “Not your business.”
Nikolai seems to get the hint and doesn’t push. He does however put something on Fyodor’s desk. A package of green tea?
“What is this?” Fyodor frowns, seeming offended. Is this a bullying attempt? An intimidation tactic?
Nikolai smiles softly and pushes it farther on the desk, “I saw it and thought of you.”
Huh?
Fyodor stares at Nikolai surprised. He just… got him something because it reminded him of Fyodor? No one’s ever even tried doing that, “Green tea? How do I remind you of green tea?”
The alpha shrugs and leans back in his chair, “You smell like green tea.”
That’s the last thing said before the bell rings. Fyodor can’t focus as he’s just so confused by this. Why would Nikolai buy him something like this? Fyodor isn’t really a big green tea drinker, he prefers something more bitter.
Fyodor is just pissed off for the rest of the period. Of course he has manners and accepts the gift, putting it in his bag.
This isn’t the last time Nikolai will do this. He’ll randomly gift Fyodor things saying it made him think of the omega. It confuses Fyodor and when he looks up why an alpha might do that it just makes things worse. He got results for courtships, inviting someone to their pack, and an alpha doing it for their children.
None of those make sense though. Fyodor gives up and decides to ask his one friend. They speak through various online platforms. They’ll have intellectual conversations, talk about their lives, and occasionally ask advice.
This friend is a fellow teenager, but he lives all the way in Japan. Osamu Dazai. They’re the same age, Fyodor being only a few months older, but Dazai is an alpha. They’re relationship has never been romantic; they are simply just good friends. Fyodor prefers talking online, it’s easy and not a constant maintenance to keep the relationship.
So with an annoyed sigh he calls Dazai on his laptop. The alpha picks up quickly. Usually they converse in Russian since Fyodor isn’t exactly fluent in Japanese. Especially casual Japanese and all the slang Dazai uses.
“Kon’nichiwa Feydoya! Oh oops—forgot. How are you doing?” He says over the phone.
From what Fyodor knows, Dazai's family is very prestigious and religious. Now Fyodor himself is a devout Orthodox Christian. However, Dazai has said his parents are members of some odd religion where they believe alphas are above all other people. Basically, they’re alpha suprematists. They don’t let Dazai hang out or even talk to omegas. He attends an all-alpha school where his parents expect him to settle down with an alpha girl.
Fyodor just sighs and responds, “I’m fine, I needed to ask you a question regarding alphas.”
Dazai laughs and mumbles something in Japanese, “Ah you’ve come to the expert Fyodor. What, are you trying to find a way to keep alphas away from you because I already told you that’ll never happen.”
Fyodor scoffs, Dazai may be his friend but he also finds him very annoying at times. Incredibly intelligent, but very annoying. “No. There’s an alpha in my classes who will randomly give me gifts. When I ask he just shrugs and says they remind him of me.”
Dazai is quiet for a moment before laughing once again. “Do you seriously not know—“
Fyodor frowns despite the fact Dazai can’t see it. “I wouldn’t be asking if I didn't.”
Dazai is heard moving around. He’s likely laying in his bed, “He’s courting you. How are you so obviously? Is he scenting you or doing things for you too?”
Fyodor thinks. He doesn’t think so, but the other day Nikolai did wrap his arm around Fyodor’s shoulder which weirdly caused him to shiver. “Hm… Well he always offers to put up my computer, and turn in stuff for me.”
Some shouting is heard from Dazai’s side as he sighs and ignores it. “Well, I’d say Fyodor Dostoyevsky is being courted. And by a very persistent alpha at that. Is he nice?”
Of course Dazai is interested in his love life. His own is completely controlled by his parents; though Fyodor has heard of the alpha’s many conquests. “I suppose he is. Though he is about as annoying as you are. He’s also tall and very popular.”
Dazai hums and there’s typing heard, “Well that stuff doesn’t matter. Do you like him?”
Fyodor thinks. Does he like Nikolai? “I’m not sure. I think I'll make a pro con list.”
Dazai huffs. It’s not the first time Fyodor has made a pro con list on something that does not need one. Truly he needs to follow his heart.
He and Dazai speak about other things while Fyodor makes his pro con list on a sheet of paper.
Dazai talks about an omega he met at a party. The omega goes to the all-omega school a few blocks away from his own school. The omega is ginger, and apparently half french. Dazai probably talks about this omega for 20 minutes. That ends in Dazai being pissed off.
“God it fucking sucks! I just had to have weird parents who hate omegas. They’d never let me go out with him. Nonetheless mate with him. I don’t even like alphas that much, but they just want me to settle with another alpha. Ugh—Just getting a whiff of another alpha in rut makes me wanna kill someone!”
Finally, Fyodor finishes his list. He interrupts Dazai’s rant. “I’ve got my list.”
Dazai sighs, calming down, “Read it to me.”

Dazai hums and listens. “Well he seems to have more pros than cons. And I think the fact you're even considering him as an option shows that you like him.”
Fyodor pauses at that. Usually when he finds out an alpha is interested in him he shuts it down immediately, but Nikolai is different. For the first time Fyodor wants to be wrapped in an alphas arms and just be held.
“Oh… Well how do I show him I’m interested as well?” He asks now, feeling weirdly nervous.
“Well there’s many ways. You could release your pheromones around him, initiate contact, or just tell him. Usually an alpha will get the hint and give their final gift. Normally something visible to others to show their claim. One of my friends gave an omega a custom hairpin.” Dazai explains.
They end the call after a bit more chatting and Fyodor flops down into his bed. Wow. He likes an alpha. Hell he got his first crush. Weird. He has the strange feeling to tell his sister but decides against it because she has a big mouth and by tomorrow his entire school will somehow know.
