The Snowflake

Summary:

On a cold December morning after her arrival back at Kurain Village, Maya reflects on her life and has a little moment with her cousin Pearl

Notes:

This was written for the Melt challenge over at fan_flashworks on Dreamwidth.

It’s been awhile since I’ve written anything but I want to get back into it and this challenge sparked something. I’ve been playing through the Ace Attorney original trilogy and I love the characters.

This is set right after the first game.

Work Text:

December is always cold in Kurain Village. Most people would make sure they keep as warm as possible with plenty of blankets and keeping windows firmly closed.

Maya Fey was not like most people. She was sitting in front of the sliding door to her room at Fey Manor, watching the snow coming down, the door open just a crack.

She loved the cold. Maya thrived in it. Nick had always complained that she kept the office too cold, worrying about air conditioning bills in the particularly hot months.

”I guess he won’t have to worry about that for awhile,” Maya remarked to herself with a pang of sadness.

She hadn’t wanted to leave Nick on his own, but after that last case, Maya felt the best place for her was back in Kurain.

Coming back to the village yesterday after being away for so long had been interesting. Little Pearl had been so excited to see her back and had tried to ask a bunch of questions about her time in the city. Maya had tried to answer but Aunt Morgan had quickly cut in, wanting Maya to focus on her training.

“Mystic Maya,” came a small voice from the entrance to the room.

Maya turned from the door to see Pearl standing in the doorway looking a little sheepish.

“Come in Pearl,” Maya greeted, patting the tatami mat beside her, “Come sit.”

The little girl shuffled over towards Maya and sat down beside her.

“Mystic Maya, what was the city like?”

Maya smiled at her cousin and began telling her of her adventures with her new friend Nick. She didn’t really elaborate on the gory details of cases but more spoke about the fun things they did in between.

Just then, a singular snowflake floated through the crack in the doorway and landed on the tip of Pearl’s nose, melting away almost instantly. Pearl shivered.

“Ooh that was cold”

Maya turned to the younger girl and smiled.

“Yes, but also a snowflake landing on your nose is a sign of good luck,” she said with a mischievous glint in her eye

“Really?” Pearl asked incredulously.

“Really really,” Maya confirmed, not wanting to shatter the young girl’s optimism by admitting she had made the whole thing up.

Pearl scooted over closer to Maya and continued to look out the door, marvelling at the snow falling down. Despite the cold, Maya felt a warmth that melted her heart at the sight.

”This is where I’m supposed to be”
