Work Text:
Jonathan saw the fight breaking out and ran over to help stop it. He was a step too late though, watching as Helen’s mask cracked and broke. Their eyes met and the puppeteer made a sudden decision.
He yanked off his long coat and wrapped it around Helen quickly, covering his head as he pulled the other man away. The rest of the house was busy arguing about whose fault it was, but Jonathan didn’t care.
He got Helen to an empty room, making sure the door was locked as his friend slid to the floor and dropped his mask. Jonathan turned, trying to decide what to say. The agony radiating off Helen felt sour.
“Helen?” A sob was his answer and the specter sat beside him. An awkward hand found Helen’s shoulder. “Hey… what happened dude?”
“My sketchbook…” Jeff was dead when Jonathan was done here. “He tore the page… said it was a waste that-“
“Don’t, I have an idea… come on, look at me, let me see your face.”
“Wh-why?” Helen looked up, startled by the hand that grabbed his chin.
“Making sure you’re ok.” There was a faint red mark but the mask had taken the most damage. He glanced at the broken plastic and frowned. He could fix it later.
He looks back up and tilts his head.
“What?”
“I always forget how pretty your eyes are.”
“Wh- huh?!”
“Nothing. Catch your breath, I’m going to go talk to Jeff.”
Helen was left alone in the room, confused, cheeks red. When he finally calmed down and went to pick up his mask, the pieces were being held back together by a glowing yellow string.
