the lady in red

Summary:

Ugh, Eddie loves her so much.

As Buck reaches the bar, Eddie notices a man trying to get her attention. Buck plays nice and polite for a bit before getting the drinks and coming straight back to Eddie.

Ha! The man notices Buck kissing Eddie’s cheek while handing her the drink. And boy, does he look defeated. Too late, random man, Buck is hers.

or

Eddie and Buck are in LOVE and Eddie is super sappy about it.

Notes:

Hi all, I am back with another fic!! No tw/cw on this one, it is pure sap and fluff. Figured this idea would be the next one I'd write since my first fic was so angsty.

Inspired by the Chris de Burgh song "The Lady in Red" which of course I do NOT own or have rights to in any way.

Enjoy! :)

Work Text:

Eddie couldn’t believe how beautiful Buck looked tonight. They were out dancing at a new bar Buck found and Eddie couldn’t keep her eyes off her. This has become their monthly date night ritual that’s lasted all the years since they first got together, and Eddie relished in the experience every time.

Buck went to the bar to get them both cocktails and her red dress was swaying to the song’s beat. People joke that Buck isn’t the most graceful woman out there, but they haven’t seen her like this. Hips swaying to the music, gliding through the crowd like she was meant to be there.

Eddie also couldn’t help but notice all the people looking at her. She’s gotten used to the many lustful looks her wife elicits.

It doesn’t bother her anymore. Mostly.

Besides, Buck doesn’t look back at them. She has tunnel vision when she’s on a mission.

After they finish their drinks, Buck pulls Eddie to the dance floor. Eddie knows this is Buck’s favorite part of the evening, even though she tries to deny it. She’ll say something like “nooo Eddie, my favorite part of the night is talking to you!

Eddie always reassures her that she loves dancing too and they can talk anytime. She wasn’t in competitive dance as a child for nothing. Reviving her love for dance with Buck was one of the best things she ever did.

As they reach the dance floor and Buck starts dancing in that chaotic—but also graceful—way Eddie loves, she notices again all the eyes in their direction. Eddie is pulled away from thinking about it and becoming too self-conscious when Buck turns and smiles at her.

Buck always shines so bright, she takes Eddie’s breath away. It’s nights like these that she’s filled with a feeling of complete and utter love.

They finish dancing to a song that had them dancing wild, and start walking to a table to sit down. Eddie never feels as old as she does after a few hours dancing to songs that are mostly fast-paced. Buck, on the other hand, is tired and panting but could go on forever.

They reach a table and Eddie places her head on Buck’s shoulder and just basks in the great night they’re having.

As Buck is swaying in her seat to the slower song playing, a man walks up to them.

Eddie already has all her hackles up—it’s never her favorite thing in a bar, to be approached by unknown men—when he starts talking to Buck.

“Hello lovely, would you like to dance–”

Buck interrupts with a swift “no thank you, we’re resting right now” and Eddie sees the man notice her in a new light. He probably just figured they were friends out to dance together, not that they were together.

Eddie was about to tell him to just leave already when the man suddenly said “sorry! I didn’t know!” and practically runs away. So, not a man in bad faith, just a man who was confused. That made her giggle uncontrollably to the point that Buck looked over at her in confusion.

Blue eyes making direct contact with her own, “Eddie, are you alright? What’s so funny?”

Eddie loves Buck’s concern over her wellbeing. And that she’ll make sure that Eddie isn’t brushing anything off that really bothers her.

After she managed to calm her giggling enough to speak, Eddie says, “oh nothing baby, that was just so funny. Did you see him practically sprint away? How his eyes were actual saucers and his realization was so obvious in them?”

Buck rolls her eyes with a smile before responding, “ohh I see. You just loved that poor guys’ panic when he saw us together.”

“Exactly. You’re mine,” Eddie replied only a little smug. “But also, it’s getting late, would you like to go home?”

Buck nodded with a smile and a peck on Eddie’s lips before they both stood up to take their empty glasses to the bar. All in all, it was an amazing night but Eddie was ready to go home and out of the growing crowds.

Coming home is always a little bittersweet now that Chris doesn’t live with them anymore. But that also gives them a freedom that Eddie has never had. She went from living with her parents, to with Shannon, to the military, to with Chris, and now with Buck.

But being with Buck is completely different.

Even though there is technically someone there with her, Buck recharges her battery instead of draining it.

Not that Chris ever drained it! But he was dependent on her in a way Buck isn’t. Buck and Eddie can just be.

Even if Eddie wants alone time, her alone time can be an “alone together time” with Buck reading on the couch. Or Buck watching one of her documentaries while Eddie embroiders. Or Buck baking while Eddie does a Sudoku puzzle at the kitchen table.

They’re in the same space, but doing their own thing. It’s so freeing to be able to just be with no expectations other than to just be there.

Buck’s first stop after a night out, as always, is to the bathroom to shower and wash her makeup off. She cannot stand having anything on her face longer than necessary. Buck would have been able to stay out and dance all night, but once she gets home she HAS to get clean and fresh faced.

Eddie gets it of course—so does she—but she always lets Buck go first. That way she can just sit on the couch and bask in the great vibes of the night.

She’s doing just that when she suddenly gets broken out of her reverie by a kiss on the cheek and Buck letting her know the bathroom was all hers.

Even though it’s been years, Eddie will never get over the domesticity of taking turns to shower in order to get into their comfy pjs. They used to care more about being “cute” or presentable for each other in the form of their pajamas. But now? To be comfy is the greatest level of domesticity there is.

Buck’s already halfway into her sleep clothes of an oversized shirt, boyshorts, and tall white socks.

Eddie joins her in the bedroom to grab her boxers and one of Buck’s oversized shirts before taking her turn in the shower.

Eddie could hear Buck in the kitchen opening and closing cabinets while she was finishing up in the bathroom.

Once she stopped in the bedroom to grab her socks she headed Buck’s way. As Eddie was walking toward the kitchen, Buck was exiting with two mugs in her hands.

Hot chocolate. Bobby’s recipe no doubt. Buck has mastered it at this point.

Eddie takes her mug and heads with Buck to the couch. They both just exist in the same space while drinking their hot chocolates. Still buzzing a little from a combination of the tipsiness wearing off and being in the same space as each other.

Once they finish, Eddie grabs both of their mugs to bring into the kitchen. Buck looks at her all gooey—as if this isn’t their normal routine: Buck makes the hot chocolate, Eddie washes up—and follows.

As usual, Buck cuddles Eddie from behind the entire time Eddie washes the dishes. Eddie can feel her drifting off by the time she’s done. Buck does that. She dozes easily when she’s tipsy and safe.

Eddie leads them both to the bathroom to brush their teeth and finish their nighttime routines. Buck tries to convince Eddie she only needs to brush her teeth, but Eddie knows that Buck will be upset if she wakes up in the morning and she didn’t finish putting her curl products in while her hair was still wet.

She tries not to smirk as Buck pouts at her. While still doing her hair routine. Ugh, Eddie loves her.

It’s Buck this time that leads them to the bedroom. They both tuck in and get into their cuddle position.

Buck falls asleep almost immediately—not a surprise—and Eddie is just soaking up the feeling of Buck in her arms while she can. She can feel herself drifting off.

She thinks about how they’ve reached this point. How when they first met Buck was acting beyond jealous (which they both eventually discovered was Buck having a massive crush on Eddie).

How they’ve weathered every storm together. How they’ve been able to celebrate every win, every major event together.

How they both sobbed when Chris graduated high school and moved out for college. How they got to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays.

How they can go out and dance and not be (too) jealous when other people are looking at their respective wife. That they know they get to have each other forevermore.

Yeah.

Eddie’s a lucky woman.
