Work Text:

The man sighed and averted his gaze from hers, stepping away from the refrigerator and heading towards the exit of the penthouse
- It- Nothing. Don't worry about me, Nat. Go, good night.
Oh, he did not just shrug this issue off after pestering everyone about all that "open communication" crap. No idea whether he does realize that or not, but that does nothing to ease her concerns. And anyone who knows Natasha Romanov would instantly tell you that when a question or a mystery nag at her she will go out of her way to find out the answers. Especially when it regarded her family. Though, she already had ideas as to what had drawn him out of bed at 3 AM on a Wednesday.
- Steve!
He turns around to see her, but Nat was already halfway through the distance between them
- You don't have to worry. I'm fine.
- Define fine. - the spy countered
Steve didn't say anything to that. What was there to say? When you choose to become a superhero, that bar of yours deteriorates over time, slowly and steadily, until it hits its final ground, all while you watch it sink. Even Nat herself now struggles with defining what is fine. Does this fall into that category?
She didn't know
- What happened to being open with your teammates, Cap? You know we're family to each other. You can tell anything that's bothering you to us. I know you would do the same thing for me if needed
- Tashie, you really should go to sleep. Literally what brought you here? We can talk about that in the morning. - Steve mumbled with a chuckle as he turned back to fleeing the scene
Now, Nat doesn't like making assumptions when there's little evidence, but there's not much other options left. She's tired of seeing the reflection of her own actions on nights like these. That's not why she comes to the kitchen at night, and, in fact, mental reflections never were her strong side nor something she liked to do.
- Is it... one of those?
He stops abruptly. That's when Natasha knew she was right. And, judging by the shift of the mood, very right.
- I would guess you too, then. - Steve broke the heavy silence
- Huh?
- You're here too. With red eyes. It's nighttime. Lucky guess
Now it was Nat's turn to look away in shame. She was not so transparent... Was she? She's supposed to be the best spy, how come Steve could see through her so effortlessly?
The soldier walked over to the assassin and gently half-hugged her
- Do you want to talk about it? - he asked. Weird question
- Not really, - the woman shrugged
- Me neither. - Steve sighed, leading her to the couch in the living room - Cup of tea?
- Sure...
