Carmen, but with better communication

Summary:

Could the tragedy have been avoided? Maybe, if Don José asked the right questions and listened to the answers...

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

“If I let you escape, you'll be my lover?”

“Yes, that's the deal.”

“You'll marry me? We'll stay together forever?”

“No. My love is temporary. I will leave you eventually.”

“Glad I asked a follow-up question. In that case, Miss Carmencita, I decline your offer. This may be hard news for you, as you'll be going to prison, but if we had become lovers and you left me, I'd end up murdering you. Overall, this is in both our best interests.”

“Fair enough. Incidentally, are there any soldiers more open to temporary relationships that could substitute for you guarding me?”

Notes:

Story begun and completed: 3 March 2026

Had a silly idea of Don José actually considering the full implications of his actions and deciding not to let Carmen go.
