proof of love sometimes contains excessive glitter

Summary:

Kip couldn’t quite believe what he was looking at, his six-foot-something of NHL-honed muscles boyfriend had made him a Valentine’s card with glitter. Kip traced the edge of the crookedly folded construction paper and his finger caught on a thick spot of glitter glue.

Early in their relationship Scott tried to make big moves for birthdays and holidays. They had discussed it, more than once, how it made Kip feel, even if it felt a bit irrational, but Scott eventually seemed to understand. Now, years into their life together, living together and doing everything together really, it was less of an issue. But it seemed like Scott was still taking it to heart...

Notes:

this is for a ficlet friday that is like a month old, and has sat in my WIP folder done for a fair bit of time - but now here it is 💚💚💚
prompt: Skip, Handmade Card

Work Text:

Kip couldn’t quite believe what he was looking at, his six-foot-something of NHL-honed muscles boyfriend had made him a Valentine’s card with glitter. Kip traced the edge of the crookedly folded construction paper and his finger caught on a thick spot of glitter glue.

Early in their relationship Scott tried to make big moves for birthdays and holidays. They had discussed it, more than once, how it made Kip feel, even if it felt a bit irrational, but Scott eventually seemed to understand. Now, years into their life together, living together and doing everything together really, it was less of an issue. But it seemed like Scott was still taking it to heart.

Scott had been at a shelter in the city he volunteers at, and apparently been there for the Valentine’s craft that day. He couldn’t help but think of Scott hunched over one of the small tables surrounded by kids, and drawn into making a valentine with them. What that meant, was Kip, was now holding a handmade card, and Scott was looking at him, as if he held his heart, and not paper, glue, stickers, and glitter, in his hands.

Fuck, it was bringing tears to Kip’s eyes if he’s honest. He realized he needed to put Scott out of the suspense, but he didn’t even know what to say, how to tell this man, that is used to buying what he wants, what this handmade card, he made with a bunch of kids, meant to him.

“Scott, I love you.”

Scott’s breath left him like he’d taken a check to the boards. Kip’s words were so simple and the smile that came to Scott’s face, was the kind that he only saw when they were at home, just for him. It made him realize just how much more he loved this man every damn day.

Words were failing him, so he pulled Scott in, pressed his lips to Scott’s, and spoke in the language they’d never had an issue with understanding.  Their lips slid together, slow and sensual, pressing and moving together. He pulled Scott close and felt his hands on his waist, as they pulled him in as well. Scott whimpered when Kip tilted his head and let their mouths open against each other. The heat built steady, not frantic, just like the way they loved each other.

Every time they broke apart Kip whispered “I love you” against Scott’s lips, because they were the only words that seemed to come out of his mouth, the only ones that mattered.

Scott dragged his thumb under Kip’s shirt as he pulled him closer, anchoring him. Kip kisses him over and over, he let himself savor the closeness and solidity of Scott being close and the warmth between them. Scott kissed him as if this moment, here with them in their kitchen was all that mattered.

When they pulled apart again Kip blinked away the tears that started to pool in the corners of his eyes, as if everything he was feeling was trying to escape from them.

Scott dragged a thumb across his cheek gathering some of them up. “Hey,” he said gently.

“You sat at a craft table with a bunch of kids.” Kip laughed through the emotion. “You probably terrified them.”

Scott huffed. “They were not scared of me. One of them told me I was doing the glitter wrong, though.”

Kip smiled, his heart fluttering. “Good.” He held up the card between them. “This means more to me than anything you could’ve bought. It makes me feel so loved.”

Scott swallowed and Kip held him close. Scott’s hands cupped his face so gently for someone who was regularly in the gym seeing how much more he could lift. “I love you, and I want you to always feel loved.”

They finally made their way to the sofa and Kip slid into Scott’s lap, facing him, and leaning in for more kisses. “I’m keeping that card forever,” Kip whispers against Scott’s lips as Scott deepens the kiss. It’s not long before he’s so lost in their kisses, that Kip is no longer thinking about the card, for now at least, he’s wrapped up in the love between them.
