Work Text:
Peter was tired, exhausted even, but unfortunately life wasn't going to stop for that.
Last nights patrol was a busy one, as in the vigilantes of New York City having to team up to take down a giant trafficking ring busy, mostly because Wade and the Wolverines were out of the universe helping the X-Men with something, Kate had taken a heavy hit the other day and was still out of commission, and once again Matt and Frank were arguing like a divorced couple about killing and it went on for ages, Matt then took a heavy hit and was also put out of commission, meaning he had to be rushed to Claires by Peter, who then had to fight an escaped scorpion, and was later scolded for not being back at his school night 1:30am curfew by Tony and May.
Then when he finally got home he remembered he had two assignments due tomorrow that he hadn't started because the evening before he'd been busy putting the bloody rhino in prison, then stayed up all night catching up on days of missed school and homework, because two nights before that he'd been critically injured during an Avengers mission to take down a Hydra base, by a knife laced with something that scarily slowed down his healing factor for a whole day, his body was still catching up a bit but he wouldn't tell anyone that, he had shit to get done. Then to top it all off the next night he had a nightmare about uncle Ben and didn't sleep for the rest of it.
And now he was up at eight in the morning and running on one hour of sleep to get ready for school. At least it was finally Friday.
He groaned and dragged himself out of bed, probably looking like he'd just been through a tornado, rubbing the sleep from his eyes, then proceeding to forget to monitor his stength and crushing his door handle. He groaned again and kicked the door open, wincing at the loud bang it made as it flew across the hallway and smashed against the wall. He had not meant to do that.
Luckily, a few months ago him and May had moved into the tower onto the Stark floor, which resided of Tony, Pepper, Happy, sometimes Rhodey, Harley while he was in New York for college, and the most recent resident, his childhood best friend Harry Osborn, who was being fostered by May since they discovered his dad was green goblin and Peter sent him to jail. (Neither of them wanted to talk about that night, and everyone else respectfully didn't push about it). So the door would be easily replaced.
Peter registered a concerned shout from one of the other rooms and a door opening, Harley bursting out of his room with his iron lad (he hated the name, but they had yet to come up with another) gauntlet on his hand, looking wild with his bed hair and panicked face, probably thinking the bang was some kind of invasion, whoops.
He took a moment to process Peter and the broken, handeless door, lowering the gauntlet down as he realised they weren't being attacked.
“Um… Pete?” He asked hesitantly, “Why'd you burst your own door down?”
“Tired.” He grumbled. Coffee would help, he usually didn't need it because of his enhancements, but times called.
He walked away towards the kitchen, where he could hear the voices of everyone else who was up, May wasn't there, probably already left for her work at the hospital. Harley awkwardly trailed after him, watching as he stumbled over a piece of stray broken wood.
“Peter, maybe you should go back to bed?” He tried to grab his hand, but was easily dodged.
“No, just need coffee.” He said simply, ignoring Harley's protests and continuing with his mission. The coffee would help and Peter would be right as rain again, after all, Spider-man always gets back up and keeps going.
To say Tony was concerned when Peter walked in to the kitchen looking dead on his feet would be an understatement, he was extremely worried, because the kid was rarely ever super tired, his enhancements giving an already ADHD kid way more energy, the incident with the hydra knife immediately coming to mind, and his worry only grew when Harley, who had late classes today and wasn't usually up at this time, rushed in after his younger brother insisting he go back to bed.
“Parker! Are you even listening to me? Get your ass back on that mattress!” He tried to pull the back of Peters oversized yoda themed hoodie and drag him there himself, but that failed miserably because he just ended up being the one getting dragged, and Peter didn't seem to even notice.
Harry and Pepper, who were sitting at the kitchen island, and Happy who was at the stove making pancakes, all had stopped and we're watching the scene with also poorly concealed worry (Harry did quietly snort, the sight of Harley being pulled along like he weighed nothing was funny, and he, and everyone else probably would've laughed if Peter didn't seem so out of it).
Peter then ripped off the door of the cabinet holding all the mugs, and crushed half the coffee machine with one finger when trying to turn it on, he'd also reached for the completey wrong button when doing so.
Everyone exchanged looks as Peter took a whole seven seconds to process what he'd just done, Harley was still tugging uselessly at his hood while looking at Tony for help.
“Hey Pete, I think Harley's right bud, those eye bags are looking pretty big.” He tried, walking over to his very clearly not present at the moment spider child.
Peter turned to him, then his eyes latched onto the mug of coffee Tony was still holding, then grabbed it and pulled it out of Tony's hands like that was a completely normal thing to do, and sending the room into a stunned silence.
The kid had just stolen his damn coffee with zero shame, and was now proceeding to lift it up to start chugging it, which finally broke Tony out of his shock and had him try grab the mug back.
Which ended up with a Peter who might as well be sleepwalking at this point to startle and instinctively yank the mug back and upwards to pry it away from Tony. Unfortunately for Tony, he was stubborn and made the mistake of holding on, causing him to be flung across the kitchen and onto the floor, the action also resulting in the coffee being launched out of the mug and into a puddle, luckily next to and not on him.
Pepper yelped and nearly fell off her seat, Harry and Harley crying out in surprise, and Happy was quickly shutting the stove off and rushing over to them, his hands cautiously raised slightly as he probably wondered whether it would be a good idea to touch Peter or not.
Peter looked just as shocked as the rest of them, staring with wide eyes at Tony who was already sitting up. “Shit, ‘m sorry, I didn’ mean to.” His voice was slurry, and Happy held his shoulders back, quietly murmuring “woah woah woah” when he tried to reach for Tony, not wanting the kid to accidentally break his hand, but Tony didn't care as he was already on his feet and pulling Peter towards him.
“Okay, it's okay kiddo, let's get you back into bed yeah?” He said gently, his chest aching with worry as Peter immediately leaned into him and Tony was soon supporting all of his weight. When was the last time his kid had slept?
“But I've got school…” He mumbled while Tony properly picked him up, Peter wrapping around him like a koala despite his barely coherent protests.
“Don't worry about that bambino, just focus on getting rest.” He soothed, nodding gratefully at Harry and Happy who were already cleaning up the mess, and Pepper who was already walking out to call the school and let them know Peter wouldn't be going in today.
Peter was out like a light when they got to the hallway, Harley coming with them, probably to stay with Peter out of worry and also get more sleep.
And Peters door was smashed to bits on the floor, he'd have to get Pepper to order a replacement.
Harley opened the door to Tony's room instead, nothing being said as they walked in. But of course setting Peter down wasn't an easy task because the kid was sticking to him, literally, and began mumbling something neither of them could begin to understand, but he was able to pick up the words “no” and “don't leave”. Tony thought his heart was going to shatter at any moment now.
“Hey, hey.” He layed down besides Peter, luckily still in his pajamas, and ran a hand through the exhausted boys hair over and over comfortingly. “No one's going anywhere, yeah? We're all safe and in the tower. I'm here.”
Peter curled into him, and to both Tonys and Harleys relief wasn't crushing him as he drifted off, panicked breathing evening out when Harley scooted in next to them and pulled the blankets up and over them, an arm wrapping around Peter and happily joining the cuddle pile.
As Tony watched his kids sleep peacefully besides him, he knew they'd have to talk to Peter about this later, and they'd be there for him no matter what, even if he accidentally breaks one of Tony's bones in his sleep, he didn't care as long as it meant he got to have both of them here and safe by his side. He wouldn't have it any other way.
