Summary:

In all the excitement Jim hasn’t actually stopped to think about what he's going to say. So as far as he knows the first words ever spoken by a human to an alien species are: “Uh. Hello?”

There’s a moment of dead air over the radio, and then a proud, inflectionless voice says, “Hello. This is Commander S’chn T’gai Spock, of the Vulcan Federation. To whom am I speaking?”
