A star as bright as you

Summary:

With the sky slowly being lit by the stars above and the warm sun setting low, Humin can’t help but admire the brightest star sitting right beside him.

or

Entropy and Humin stargazing one-shot!!!!!

Notes:

Wanted to make a BN2J fanfic and came up with this idea immediately, so I’m stickin’ with it.
SIDE NOTE BEFORE THE FANFIC STARTS:
I’d like to think that since Entropy doesn’t have a face and can’t necessarily show emotion through facial expressions because of it, each emotion is assigned a color (ex: Happy/excited = yellow) and it shines through the glitches that he has on his body. Not that it entirely alters the green and purple color, but instead glows through the in-between cracks of his glitches. Does that make sense? I hope that makes sense. To put it simply, Entropy is glow in the dark when showing strong emotion /hj

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

HuminTorch joined the game.

Spending every single moment of your life living in a Minecraft world is, naturally, not very fulfilling. Fishing for hours on end at the slightest chance of getting something valuable typically falls flat, feeding the animals can only pass so much time, and building takes forever.

Humin doesn’t really seem to struggle with this problem, never getting the chance to understand the phrase ‘bored’ with real-life’s constant busyness and berating; his job never gives him the break he needs to get through the day normally.

Entropy, on the other hand, is currently having one of these days: a common problem he has to suffer with.

The entire evening has been spent lazily sitting around wanting to catch something at least mildly interesting, preferably an enchantment book or saddle to lead more animals to his farm. Unfortunately, only stacks of sticks and rotten flesh pile his inventory, rising with each toss of the rod.

Hunched over with his left hand resting against his cheek and a fishing rod loosely held in the other, he watched the lazy flowing water with little to no interest.

So, when the pop up signaling Humin joined the game flashed at the bottom of the screen, Entropy instantly sprang to his feet. Excitement became apparent through the cracks of the green and purple glitches painted all over his entire body, emitting a yellow-ish hue.

<3Entropy> Hello, Humin

<HuminTorch> hi

Already, Entropy stood eagerly right beside him.

<3Entropy> I was waiting for you.

Humin takes a moment to reply, evidently taken back by the sudden, although understandable, confession.

<HuminTorch> were you?

<HuminTorch> sorry for keeping you waiting so long

<3Entropy> It’s okay

Humin lets his concerns ease away slightly, but not entirely. Entropy takes note of this and strives to distract him with other things.

<3Entropy> How was your day?

<HuminTorch> like every other day

<3Entropy> Bad, then?

<HuminTorch> yeah

A rough day is ordinary for Humin, becoming something that he’s forced to tolerate no matter the context.

Entropy can’t help but feel bad for him every time.

<3Entropy> I’m sorry to hear that, Humin.

<HuminTorch> im fineeeeeee

<HuminTorch> you dont need to be so worried for me

Wanting to shift the topic, Entropy takes a moment before walking in another direction from where they were standing to go feed the animals. Humin tags along shortly behind.

<3Entropy> I’ve been fishing almost the entire day

<HuminTorch> hows that going for you

<3Entropy> Honestly, horrible.

<HuminTorch> LMAO

Digging through a chest and picking up a pile of seeds, he feeds the chickens. Humin stands off to the side, watching Entropy continue to his daily chores as the conversation continues on—Humin decided to participate every once and a while whenever Entropy needed a helping hand with things.

Time passed as the pair hung out together, and soon enough, the day faded into a peaceful night, frogs starting to croak in the distance. Entropy’s formerly cheerful attitude fell noticing this subtle change.

<3Entropy> Dang it

<HuminTorch> what is it

<3Entropy> The sun is setting

Humin looked over and, sure enough, the sun was slowly descending into the horizon with the sky turning various shades of red and yellow.

<HuminTorch> whats wrong with that

<3Entropy> Doesn’t matter, I’ll just set the time to day

He turns back towards Entropy, stopping him before he could type the command.

<HuminTorch> wait actually

<HuminTorch> could you keep it night

<3Entropy> Why

<HuminTorch> its a suprissseeeeeee

Entropy chooses not to further urge Humin on the topic, quickly backspacing to delete the half-typed command. His attention turns toward the horizon. Letting the sun set lower and lower…

<HuminTorch> can i show you something

Curiosity shines through his glitches, now radiating an orange hue instead of the previous yellow.

Darkness filled every crevice of the sky by the time Humin asked the question, the only two light sources being the slowly rising, luminescent moon, and Entropy’s dim glow.

<3Entropy> Yes

Suddenly taking his hand, Humin drags Entropy up the steep hill planted right in front of their house—the same one used for their Valentines picnic.

A loose rock causes Entropy to stumble a bit, and the firm grasp on his hand once again awkwardly holds him in place. Humin giggles in response to his clumsiness.

<HuminTorch> come on, we are almost there

Finally reaching the top of the hill, Entropy takes a moment to catch his breath, breathing in and out exhaustively with his head ducked down. There’s nothing particularly special put together for the two of them. The naturally spawned greenery and trees were the only things present; the picnic set had already been stored away in keeping for separate occasions.

<HuminTorch> come here

At some point, Humin sat down at a random spot in the field, not bothering to care about the potential creepy-crawlies that may make themselves home in the grass below them.

Sitting cross-legged, he softly pats the patch of grass beside him, urging Entropy to join.

Entropy decisively plops down right beside him, laying his arms back behind him to press down onto the ground with his legs laid out in front of him.

This whole trip has been quite… confusing so far. Sure, Entropy loves when Humin takes him on little detours like this, often admiring it way more than he’d actually admit to. He just can’t entirely grasp what Humin is wanting to show him.. yet. And the whole ordeal with keeping it nighttime felt kind of, uh, strange? And it’s not that he hates the night. Frankly, he would squeeze the night sky in a tight embrace if ever given the chance—

<HuminTorch> ? are you okay

Coming back into focus, Entropy realizes Humin is trying to talk to him. He looks very confused, and more importantly, concerned; his eyebrow raises as he continues to stare at Entropy.

<3Entropy> Hm?

<3Entropy> I’m okay, why?

<HuminTorch> you’re glowing

He looks down, and sure enough, he’s radiating an orange color, completely shining the surrounding area which makes the trees and other natural features entirely visible to anyone currently present.

<3Entropy> Oh

Suddenly, two computer-like pop ups cover both of his white cheeks, a pink ‘X’ embedded in the middle of the two pop ups that seem to resemble blush. He looks down at the ground shyly, fully realizing how embarrassing this must be—in reality, it really isn’t, but Entropy believes it is. Humin snickers just loud enough for Entropy to hear, hand coming up to gently cover his own mouth.

<3Entropy> Sorry about that

<HuminTorch> LOLLL its fine

Humin starts to type “i actually find it quite cute” before regretting it halfway through, rapidly pressing the ‘delete’ button on his keyboard before he could actually go through with sending it.

He forces his attention to divert towards the stars hovering above them; what he’d been wanting to show Entropy from the very start of this entire outing.

<HuminTorch> look

He directs up straight towards the sky, pointing at nothing in particular, but really the entire atmosphere as a whole.

Entropy instinctively glances at Humin by the abrupt noise of his voice interrupting his thoughts, but he soon after realizes what he is asking, to which he complies.

…Oh my god, it’s stunning.

The only word Entropy can let come to mind at this exact moment is simply that. No other word that may sound adjacent to another, not some fancy-sounding word with a million other definitions, not some synonym to make it sound perfect with just the right wording. Just simply, wonderfully stunning.

Tiny bright stars are sprinkled around carelessly, no specific order or pattern to their arbitrary nature, whether that is in size or color, it doesn’t matter. Blasts of colors that range from purple, to pink, to green, to blue, to purple again spread across the entire night sky. Perfectly parallel streaks of green and blue—assumed to be the northern lights—blend alongside with the other mix-matched hues and tones, leaving little to no hints of color from the usual black sky to sneakily peek through.

He’s seen the sky at night before, in both Minecraft and real-life images that he comes across from time to time when nonchalantly browsing the internet, but wow, it has never looked quite like this.

<HuminTorch> i installed a mod

<HuminTorch> it gives the night sky a more realistic look

<HuminTorch> i thought i should just show you it instead of letting you find out on your own

<3Entropy> It’s very pretty, Humin

A considerate “like you” in response passes by as an afterthought, but it’s never actually said.

<3Entropy> Do you know any of the constellations?

<HuminTorch> no, not really

Entropy starts to point out each and every constellation that he knows of, pointing sporadically and urgently at random spots in the night sky.

Even after about ten minutes, Entropy is still going on, and he doesn’t regret a single bit.

<3Entropy> That one’s the Big Dipper

He says so whilst directing the focus towards a new constellation, appearing as something similar to a ladle or plow—it looks to have a bowl and a handle.

<HuminTorch> where?

<3Entropy> Hold on a moment

Entropy shifts himself awkwardly with his hands and legs to move closer to where Humin is sitting, and their shoulders end up touching right where he decides to stop.

Again pointing back up into the sky, Entropy lines up his arm to Humin’s point in vision so he can follow it properly.

<3Entropy> There

<3Entropy> Is this better?

Humin faintly nods.

<HuminTorch> yes, thank you

Entropy quickly resumed to his rambling.

<3Entropy> As I was saying, that is the Big Dipper

<3Entropy> It’s made up of the seven brightest stars in the Ursa Major constellation

<3Entropy> the very last star on the handle is actually Polaris, which is the North Star

<3Entropy> and when coming off of that…

He slowly directs to another spot in the sky while also making sure to keep aligned with Polaris as much as possible, wanting to accurately display his point.

<3Entropy> then you can actually find the Little Dipper

Humin mentally aligns the stars they are now pointing at, understanding what it’s meant to resemble almost instantaneously.

<HuminTorch> any other constellations you’d want to show me?

Entropy struggles to think of any more constellations to display for him, slowly putting his arm down and laying it neatly across his stomach.

<3Entropy> If there is any more, I’ve forgotten

<HuminTorch> i dont mind

Humin takes a moment to look into the sky just a little longer before turning to face him, with Entropy noticing and mirroring the action.

<HuminTorch> i never knew that you were so interest in astrology

<3Entropy> It’s Astronomy, Humin, not Astrology.

<HuminTorch> whateverrrrrrrr

<HuminTorch> im just curious though

<HuminTorch> when did you ever get to learn this type of stuff?

Entropy briefly considers the question before responding.

<3Entropy> YouTube recommended me things on the topic, so I looked into it

Humin isn’t entirely buying it, sensing the partial truth hidden in the statement; Entropy isn’t fessing up to the entire story.

<HuminTorch> …and?

Entropy’s eyes widen, and his cheeks are suddenly once again blocked by the previously mentioned pop-ups as he shyly looks away from the latter.

<3Entropy> I may have…

Now with a mischievous smirk plastered on his face, Humin leans in closer. Entropy feels his face get irritatingly hot.

<3Entropy> …I may have spent about four hours researching it…

<HuminTorch> ??? WHAT

Humin almost chokes on his own spit after hearing the confession. Although he was basically trying to squeeze the answer out of him, he wasn’t expecting that. He stands up in a sitting position, making exaggerated hand movements to emphasize his astonishment.

<3Entropy> Entities get bored sometimes, okay?!

Humin lightly chuckles at his defensiveness, breaking character.

<HuminTorch> LOL im just messing with youuuu

Humin lays back down and gives Entropy a little teasing nudge on the shoulder.

The night continues as it originally was, with Entropy sharing random facts about both the Earth and things outside of it as Humin listens and admires him attentively.

At some point during their ongoing conversation, Humin in real-life fell asleep right at his desk. His arms crossed and held his head comfortably, although it still probably won’t save him from the back pain he’ll most likely have in the morning.

<3Entropy> Goodnight, Humin. I love you

Humin of course wouldn’t be able to hear it, but Entropy means it with his entirely devoted, entity heart.
