The rain hammered down on the rooftops of Nerima like it wanted to wash the whole town away. Ranma Saotome and his father Genma pushed through the flooded streets, packs slung over their shoulders and water sloshing around their ankles with every step. Lightning cracked overhead and lit up the pair for a split second. Ranma looked every bit the fighter he was, lean and tough from years of nonstop training. His black hair hung in a short pigtail that dripped steadily down his neck. The red silk shirt stuck to his chest and his black pants clung tight to his legs. He kept his jaw set and his dark eyes narrowed against the downpour.
Genma lumbered along beside him, broad and heavy with muscle under a layer of padding. His white gi hung soggy and patched in a dozen places. Rain streamed off his balding head and the little tuft of hair at the back. He huffed and puffed, muttering the whole way. "Just a little farther, boy. Keep moving."
Naruto Uzumaki jogged right beside them, moving like the storm did not even touch him. His spiky blond hair stayed wild and upright, rain bouncing right off it. The orange and black jacket with its swirling patterns looked bright even in the gloom, and the big spiral symbol on the back stood out bold and clear. His blue eyes sparkled with easy confidence. Three faint whisker marks on each cheek gave him a sharp, playful edge. Pouches of every size bounced at his waist, but he never missed a step. He grinned wide, the kind of grin that said he had seen worse nights and come out laughing.
Anyone glancing out a window would have stopped and stared. Two soaked martial artists dragging their gear through rivers of rain, and this bright orange stranger keeping perfect pace like he owned the street. The trio turned a corner and the Tendo house came into view. The tall wooden gate stood solid under its little roof, the plaque reading Tendo clear even in the wet dark. Warm light glowed from the windows behind it, promising dry floors and hot food.
Genma stopped at the gate, bent over with his hands on his knees, chest heaving. He pushed his glasses back up his nose and wiped the water off them. "Ranma, my boy, we made it. This is the Tendo dojo."
Ranma wrung out the end of his pigtail and flicked the water away. "About time. Felt like we were swimming the whole way here."
Naruto stood a step behind them, hands loose at his sides, taking in the whole place with a quiet smile. He had been traveling with the Saotomes for a while now after that mess in the last village. Genma had tried one scheme too many, and it ended with Ranma losing a fair fight. Their lives belonged to Naruto until Ranma could beat him before turning eighteen. Naruto never treated them like servants. He shared meals, traded jokes, and kept them out of real trouble. Still, the deal sat heavy between them. Ranma hated owing anyone, and Genma kept trying to smooth things over with nervous smiles.
Genma straightened up, slid the gate open with a creak, and waved them through. The rain eased the second they stepped into the yard, as if the storm respected the walls. They followed the stone path past the garden. Even beaten down by the rain, the place looked cared for, with neat hedges and a koi pond brimming over. The wooden porch waited ahead. Genma pounded on the sliding door. "Tendo! Open up! It is me, Saotome! We are here!"
The door slid back fast. Soun Tendo stood there in a yukata, towel in hand, eyes wide with happy surprise. "Saotome! Is that really you after all these years?" He laughed loud and pulled them inside, handing towels around like they were old family. "Come in, come in before you drown right on my doorstep!"
Inside, the warm light made everything feel alive. The wooden walls held neat calligraphy scrolls, and the tatami mats smelled fresh. Steam rose from the kitchen and the rich smell of rice and miso soup drifted out. Ranma’s stomach growled loud enough for everyone to hear. Genma’s eyes went straight to the kitchen.
Soun waved them toward the living room. "Sit down, all of you. I will grab more towels and some dry clothes. My daughters should be back from their errands any minute."
They dropped onto the cushions around the low table. Naruto chose a spot a little to the side, giving the family space. He folded the towel in his lap and looked around with real interest. The place felt steady, the kind of home he had only seen from the outside during his travels. He offered Soun a friendly nod. "Thank you for letting us in like this."
Soun smiled wide. "Any friend of Saotome is welcome here." His eyes turned back to Genma with a curious tilt. "You wrote about bringing your son, but I did not expect a third guest. Who is this young man?"
Genma rubbed the back of his neck. "This is Naruto Uzumaki. We met him on the road."
Naruto gave a small bow from his seat. "Nice to meet you, Tendo-san. I appreciate the roof and the warmth."
Before anyone could say more, the front door opened again. Three young women stepped in, shaking rain off their umbrellas. Soun lit up like a lantern. "Here they are! These are my daughters. Kasumi, Nabiki, and Akane."
Kasumi came first, long light brown hair tied back neat, her pastel dress soft and simple. She clasped her hands together. "Oh my, we have guests. I will bring extra towels right away." She moved quick and graceful, returning in seconds with a stack and handing them out with a gentle smile for each person.
Nabiki followed, short dark hair framing sharp eyes that missed nothing. She wore a casual blouse and skirt and sized up Naruto’s bright outfit with one raised eyebrow. A tiny smirk tugged at her lips, but she stayed quiet for now.
Akane came last, shoulder-length dark hair still damp, high school uniform clinging a little from the rain. She looked straight at the visitors with open curiosity. "Dad, who are these guys?"
Soun puffed up with pride. "This is my old friend Genma Saotome and his son Ranma, heir to the Saotome School of Anything-Goes Martial Arts. And this is Uzumaki Naruto, traveling with them."
Genma cleared his throat and leaned forward. "Tendo, about that promise we made years ago. One of your daughters engaged to my boy Ranma to join the two schools."
Akane’s eyes flew wide. "What?"
Nabiki’s smirk grew. "So, which one of us gets the lucky guy?"
Ranma’s face flushed red. "Hey, wait a second! Nobody asked me about any of this!"
Akane crossed her arms tight and looked away fast. "I do not like boys. Especially not some cocky martial artist who shows up soaked and expecting a fiancée." She shot Ranma a glare that could cut stone.
Naruto sat back and rubbed the back of his neck, amusement plain on his face as he watched the sparks fly. He caught Ranma’s annoyed glance and gave a tiny shake of his head, like he was saying it would all work out. The swirl on his jacket caught the light and gleamed for a second.
Nabiki turned her sharp gaze on Naruto. "And what about you? You traveling with them, so are you part of this whole engagement thing too?"
Naruto laughed easy and warm. "Nah, I am just along for the ride. Moral support and all that."
Genma nodded so fast his glasses slipped again. "Exactly. Strictly Saotome and Tendo business. Naruto is just a friend we picked up."
Soun clapped his hands together. "No need to rush anything tonight. We are all together at last. Let us eat first. Kasumi, can you fix something for our guests?"
Kasumi’s eyes sparkled. "Of course, Father. I will have it ready in no time." She headed for the kitchen with Nabiki trailing behind, probably to gather details or lend a hand.
The room felt a little less tense with the smell of food on the way. Akane dropped onto a cushion as far from Ranma as she could get, but she still passed him the rice bowl when it came around. Ranma muttered a quick thanks and tried to eat like a normal person instead of the bottomless pit he usually was. Naruto took a big bite of the stew and his whole face lit up. He looked right at Kasumi. "This tastes amazing. Thank you for cooking for us."
Kasumi blushed and smiled bigger. "I am so glad you like it. Please feel at home here."
Chopsticks clicked, bowls passed back and forth, and the rain outside softened to a steady patter. Everyone started to relax into the warmth and the full bellies. After a while Nabiki leaned forward, eyes bright with interest. "So, Uzumaki-san, where are you from? You look like you have seen more than just this town, and you move like someone who knows how to handle himself."
Naruto swallowed his bite and gave her an honest shrug. "I have been all over. Picked up bits from different places and put them together into my own style. It keeps things interesting."
Akane perked up, fingers tapping the edge of her bowl. "You must have fought all kinds of people on the road. How good are you, really?"
Naruto met her eyes with a small grin. "I hold my own. But every fighter brings something different. It is all about how you use what you have."
Ranma snorted softly and crossed his arms. "He is strong. Real strong." The words came out grudging, but his eyes burned with that familiar fire. He still remembered the fight he had lost, and the challenge still sat between them like a promise.
Genma stuffed another huge bite of rice in his mouth and laughed around it. "Not long since we met him. Everything is fine now."
The conversation rolled easy after that, moving to stories of old training days between Soun and Genma, questions about the local shops, and how Nerima had grown. The rain kept falling soft outside while the room filled with the clink of bowls and quiet laughs.
When the meal ended, Kasumi stood up with a bright smile. "I will show you to the guest rooms. It is nothing fancy, but you will be comfortable."
She led them down the hallway with a lantern, pointing out the spaces. Naruto got the small separate room with a window overlooking the garden. Ranma and Genma took the one right next door. Naruto set his pack down and looked around the simple space. The futon waited folded in the corner, and the tatami felt cool under his feet. He bowed to Kasumi. "This is perfect. Thanks again."
Ranma poked his head in the doorway, hands in his pockets. "See you in the morning. Try not to snore too loud."
Naruto grinned back. "Same to you. Tomorrow should be fun." He gave Ranma a quick wink that earned an eye roll and a half-smile in return.
The house grew quiet as everyone settled in. Naruto sat by the window for a minute, watching the moon break through the clouds and paint the garden silver. The place felt solid and warm, the kind of home he had never stayed in for long. A small smile tugged at his lips while he thought about the days ahead, the challenges Ranma would throw at him, and the chance to watch the kid grow stronger. He stretched out on the futon, listening to the soft rain, and let sleep pull him under with that same easy grin still on his face.
