In Another Life

Summary:

I was meant to die 155 years ago.
Instead, I was preserved.

My mind was transferred into an avatar, while my human body was left behind - trapped somewhere between life and death. An experiment. A failure. Forgotten… until I woke up.

Now I’m stranded on Pandora, in a body that isn’t mine, surrounded by people who were never meant to be mine either. The Na’vi teach me how to live, how to breathe, how to belong; but no matter how much I learn, something still feels… off.
Like I was never supposed to wake up.

Then Toruk Makto’s family arrives. They’re everything the stories say they are - untouchable, almost unreal. But it isn’t him that unsettles me.
It’s his son.
The way he looks at me… like he sees something I don’t.
And for the first time since I woke up-
I don’t feel so out of place anymore.

Based on Avatar The Way of Water.
Neteyam x fem!Reader fanfic.
Please excuse any mistakes in this, English is not my first language!

The three girls stared intensely at the wide selection of keychains in front of them. "Which one should we get?" The one on the left stated. "They're all so cute!" She reached out to grab a strawberry-themed Hello Kitty keychain.

"You're totally right, Maja" The middle one sighed, "there's no way to choose"

The one on the right, the shortest out of the three, was more focused on the prices of said keychains. Of course she wanted to get really cute keychains to match her friends but they were all so expensive for small plushies of popular characters. Her eyes darted to her phone as she checked the time, it stated 15:54 the 21st of March 2015.

"Why don't we get these ones?" Pointing her index finger at smaller keychains, they still were just as pretty as the others but reasonably priced. "They even have Pompompurin and My Melody so we can get matching ones just like we wanted." The other two seemed to agree and chose the keychains they wanted. The girls rummaged through their bags to find the amount of money they needed and went to the cash desk to pay.

Once they were outside, the one named Maja suggested that they take pictures to 'commemorate their friendship'. "Ugh but I look so bad right now!" The brunette, Alicia, groaned.

"It doesn't matter, you still look really pretty regardless," The miniature-sized girl states, "If anything we can take more tomorrow at school as well."

"Okay, it's settled! We'll take one now and more tomorrow." Maja beamed as she stuck her arm out to take a selfie, each of the three girls holding the keychain they had bought. After which, the girls had put them onto their bags and continued with their journey home, keychains swinging with each step.

However, one of them hadn't secured it on her bag properly as it dropped while they were crossing the road. Just as she was about to depart from the other two, one called out "Wait! I think you dropped your keychain," To which she frantically looked around to spot it lying in the middle of the road. Seeing the pedestrian sign still signalling green, she decided to quickly run across the road to retrieve it.

Unfortunately, a driver had lost control of the lorry causing it to swerve and hit the girl just as she picked up her keychain. The last thing she witnessed was the bright green of the large vehicle before it slammed into her, loosing consciousness immediately.

Muffled sounds of crying was the first thing she heard - at least she thought it was crying. Whoever it was, she wanted to wake up and comfort them but her body wouldn't obey her commands, she couldn't even open her eyes. The sound of mumbling continued, was someone speaking? Though she could only catch a few words; "... Sorry.... Unlikely to wake up... comatose.... Permanent vegetative state..." She tried to make sense of it as the wailing sounds got louder, was that her mother? No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't make sense of it. Was she going to die? What was going to happen? "I want to wake up," she thought as her mind slipped back into the dark space it had been in.

The next time her hearing had kicked in again, it was the sound of a woman shouting at others. Like a military sergeant. "Okay five seconds until activation! This is gonna be the one guys, we will make this avatar wake up if we have to!" Avatar? What was this lady talking about. Did she mean avatars in those role-play games? She wondered as her mind began to shut down again. Though it felt like an eternity, her mind stirred once more, loud beeping sounds surrounded her as a large cheer erupted. It was the lady from before, "We have done it guys! We have given this girl a second chance at life!" The cheers got even louder before it quietened. "The moment of truth is upon us, will this girl wake up?" The girl was confused, what had just happened? She still couldn't feel her body, let alone control it. The panic had caused her brain activity to surge before taking a dip till there was little left - she had fallen back into the dark.

".... The first successful moving of a conscious from a human body to an avatar," the man's voice remained mumbled, another voice chimed in, "Then how is her body still preserved if she's technically over 50 years old?" The girl had assumed it was about her again, like the last time she was awake. However, she was caught up in the fact that if it were true that they were referring to herself, that she was now 50 years older! "Another mystery of the Na'vi, it seems as long as they are comatose, they physically do not age..." Ok, now they were definitely talking about her. As she strained her mind to listen in the man's voice faded out.

It was a knocking that awakened her mind once again. "I wonder how long's she been here," it was the voice of a young man. "About 70-ish years or so?" A woman replied, "I remember professor talking about how she was taught using the live model of an 11 year old avatar." The numbers had barely registered until her mind was drowned in the sea of black once more.

This had occurred several times across the years; the girl waking up, hearing voices, gaining a hint at what year it was, then falling back into the dark place. At some point, she had stopped hearing voices and instead heard animals. This then turned into what she assumed was somewhere in a large body of water, before finally hearing voices once more. However, she didn't recognise the language they were speaking. It was unlike any language she had heard before - who were these people?
